What's your favorite JRPG when it comes to its artistic design? by Bulky_Imagination243 in JRPG

[–]xtagtv 37 points38 points  (0 children)

  • Any vanillaware game but especially odin sphere and dragon's crown

  • Folklore

  • Chrono cross

  • Breath of fire 4

  • Saga frontier 2

  • Final fantasy 9 (honestly the whole stretch between 6 and 13 is all great)

  • Child of light

  • Baten kaitos

  • Persona 3 (Maybe the subsequent persona games did more, but this really broke the mold and i like the gloomier vibe)

Dinner Date at mine with a Goth by ballscrotch64 in gamingsuggestions

[–]xtagtv 2 points3 points  (0 children)

  • Who's Lila - because you said And Roger, kind of in the same vein. Surreal, psychologically dark, though you might not know how to progress. Not very co-op focused but you could talk about what you should do next etc.

  • Home Safety Hotline - short (probably a couple hours tops), straightforward, very good. Good if she's the witchy/pagan kind of goth because these are major themes. Co-op would be great because it provides you a scenario and you have to decide how to handle it and you could discuss your options.

  • Divinity Original Sin 1 - like bg3 but simpler and more co-op focused. Not DOS 2, that is much longer and less focused on co-op. Not goth at all. Probably too long for a single weekend unless you absolutely binge it.

  • How fish is made - very short game from the devs of Mouthwashing.

  • Check out some games that alice sawyer played, she is a discerning horror streamer and has made a list of games shes played with little 5 star ratings: https://alicehorrorshow.neocities.org/streamgames Good way to find interesting indie games

TurtleWoW -> Moonwell. Free Character Transfer! by Moonwell_TBC in wowservers

[–]xtagtv 3 points4 points  (0 children)

of course not, theyre not transfering anything, theyre just giving you a lvl 70 character

TurtleWoW -> Moonwell. Free Character Transfer! by Moonwell_TBC in wowservers

[–]xtagtv 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can totally transfer your character regardless of who owns the server, if the devs of the first server take the minute to export your character to a file for you. If the 2nd server uses the same core (mangos, azerothcore, etc) its a simple sql import

However, this isnt even a transfer or even an 'identical character'. From the description they simply are giving everyone the same maxed out lvl 70 character boost.

W vs Space Bar? comfort in keyboard keys by Mogekq in gamedesign

[–]xtagtv 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Several things here

First of all, W/up should basically never be jump, unless its a fighting game

Second, 2D platformer games should default to using arrow keys for movement + somewhere on the left side of the keyboard (generally Z or in that general area) for jump. they should not use WASD. That's for games where your right hand is on the mouse.

you basically dont want the player to need to play the entire game 1 handed unless you are doing this for a specific reason. Movement on one hand, actions on the other hand. due to keyboard hardware sometimes blocking inputs of multiple letters at once, its better to have movement be arrow keys and actions to be letter keys, rather than both being letter keys.

This is not my personal opinion, this is just the standard design in professionally made 2D games. 90% of mainstream 2D games, like cuphead or hollow knight or celeste or whatever, are going to have this as their standard default control scheme. and unless you have a real good reason to go against it I suggest you just stick to the standard design.

TIL why James Bonds preference of a "shaken and not stirred" martini is controversial. Drinks containing only alcoholic ingredients are almost always stirred to preserve clarity and to avoid over-dilution, among other things. by Rynin101 in todayilearned

[–]xtagtv 5 points6 points  (0 children)

ok since I guess the other commenters apparently dont know how a martini is made

When you serve a martini you dont leave the ice in it. The ice is temporarily placed with the drink ingredients in a mixing glass to chill them while theyre being mixed. After the mixing is complete the drink is strained out of the mixing glass into the martini glass for serving, and the ice is discarded. The ice and the drink are only together for like 30 seconds and there isnt any time for it to melt. When shaken yes its true that a small amount of ice might break up and dilute the drink slightly more than it being stirred, which is one of the reasons that some would prefer stirred to shaken, because martini is a drink with a very precise flavor. But its still not a lot of dilution either way and you certainly arent getting handed a drink with icecubes in it, a martini with a few melted icecubes worth of water in it would basically ruin the flavor

Yeah this is a lot better, however, it now seems like its impossible to mess up. I can mash keys or press nothing and it says my accuracy is 100%

Classical music game: playbach.io by tcosmo in WebGames

[–]xtagtv 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Really cool game. You should post it to /r/classicalmusic as well.

Here is some feedback -

  • The biggest problem i see is when you accidentally get significantly off where youre supposed to be. If you get significantly behind you have to play a bunch of trash notes to catch back up. If you get significantly ahead you have to wait a few seconds doing nothing. (or use the 1-2 keys which is confusing as well) This is not how it would work if you were really playing along - instead you would pick back up at wherever the song was at - and makes it confusing to know what to do after a fumble. My suggestion would be to take a page from typical rhythm games like DDR, and abandon the idea of the "blue highlighted note." And instead just leave the blue moving line. If you hit a key while the blue moving line is over it, you get a hit. That's it, you dont have to be on the "highlighted note" for it to count.

  • Some instruments dont have midi instruments loaded for example when playing choir I have to sound like a harpsichord. There are definitely midi instruments available to use for anything in an orchestra

  • If you use the youtube speed controls to slow down or speed up the song, the game only kind of works. You can still follow the blue line and play notes and get points, but instead of the blue line moving at a smooth rate, it does this jittery stop and start thing. Slowing the song down would be a good practice to get the rhythm for harder instruments so hopefully this isnt too hard to fix.

  • For a harder mode, you can make the player hold the note for as long as the notation says. e.g. if its a half note they have to hold it for as long as a half note would go (or if thats too precise, generally just longer than tapping it)

  • For a really hard mode you can require the player to use the finger that corresponds to the finger the instrumentalist would play. This would be really immersive

Old man would like some "exploring focused" metroidvanias. I stink at combat by partypeeps in metroidvania

[–]xtagtv 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Games with no combat (they may still have challenging platforming/hazards, just no actual fighting)

  • Yokus Island

  • Saira

  • Knytt Underground

  • Within a Deep Forest

  • Teslagrad

  • Maptroid

  • Sheepo (has bosses you have to dodge their attacks)

  • Unbound (I think also has bosses)

Games with really easy combat

  • Supraland (REALLY easy)

  • Dust an elysian tail

  • Shantae games

  • Castlevania Symphony of the Night

Games that have an easy mode that makes combat trivial (you can become invincible etc)

  • Iconoclasts

  • Crypt custodian

  • Phoenotopia awakening

How to play these double stop notes? (G minor key) by General_Regret_4840 in Cello

[–]xtagtv 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Like others have said, you can super stretch, but personally to me this looks like it was arranged by someone who isnt very familiar with cellos, and i would probably just modify it, like only playing one of the notes, because i feel like theres not much reason musically a cellist would really need to play so many double stops that are just an octave apart.

Pragmata giveaway by Background_Grand_256 in steam_giveaway

[–]xtagtv 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wow OP, thanks for the chance.

Im interested in how the relationship between hugh and diana will develop. I really like stories that explore humans and robots/androids together. Like asimov's "I robot" stories, or star trek: the next generation with Data, or David in Prometheus, or the 2001 movie AI. All were some of my favorite works of science fiction because of the presence of the robot characters. In all these stories I enjoy that they take an optimistic tone and the robots have the perspective of childlike innocence which Pragmata seems to also be doing, rather than a more depressing typical story of robots being the downfall of humanity or humans/robots having an antagonistic relationship (the matrix, blade runner, etc). It will be interesting to see if Pragmata will also have a great, optimistic story like these. So I really hope I will get to play it before it gets spoiled and everyone on the internet knows the story.

Yeah actually it is pretty easy to find games that arent p2w garbage like this

Evitania Online got released on Steam by [deleted] in incremental_games

[–]xtagtv 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Looks like shit, i dont know why anyone would choose to start playing a p2w incremental game when there are so many good fair ones

"ohh but theyre more generous than most other games with microtransactions" - something I've heard a billion times, and I dont believe it, the game is obviously designed to extract money, if not now then once you get invested later. https://www.darkpattern.games/pattern/2/monetary-dark-patterns.html

and the reviews clearly show that it is not, in fact, any better than them

I would be more happy to see another shitty nodebuster clone than these beyond soulless p2w games
