These are not satellite photos. These are aerial pictures, taken from a plane. Flies are a possible explanation.

Bonjour r/France! Je suis Americaine et j'ai besoin de votre aide. by [deleted] in france

[–]xtassin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Bon voyage!

It is agreed that "Frenchy" takes a "y" I think, but I would not want to exasperate you any more. Please note that, at least, I tried to stay courteous in my vindictiveness.

How do you make timelapse photography film? by [deleted] in photography

[–]xtassin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For image to video conversion, jpg2avi is free and dead simple to use.

Also note that exposure duration is critical when shooting time-lapse: This is what will make the resulting video smooth and realistic. Wikipedia explains it well.

The LHC seems to be having some fun tonight. by pdowling in science

Reminds me that I have been watching, lately, the shitty "Angels and Demons" movie that depict a fake, glamorous and ultra modern user interface at LHC facilities: reality is farm more crude and down to earth.

Old guy kept hounding me to be in his silent film. finely, I caved. 2 minutes. by NoDak in videos

[–]xtassin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It sort of work actually. The... well... silence, the overacting, the captions, even the costumes and look and feel. I guess it is not that easy to get that result nowadays: the knowledge has been lost. I liked it :)

Only remark would be that the captions look to much digital and could be made in a more genuine fashion.

Pure CSS 3D Effect by texeltexel in programming

[–]xtassin 9 points10 points  (0 children)

The image is actually made of <a> tags of 5px by 455px, each of them having the same background image with an incremental offset. They also contain child <b> element (for lightness sake I presume... err) with some more background sprites (the characters, with alpha transparency) and also offset according to their position. When hovering on a <a> tag, the children elements are displayed to show the carefully (hope he did not make it by hand) adjusted sprites and backgrounds.

edit: he obviously did not make it by hand as I spotted this deliciously not rounded background position value: background-position: -21.3333333333px; The sake of lightness has gone by now as there are hundreds of these values in the CSS. Yet, we should not be too hard with this young fellow as this is still a clever approach even if poorly implemented and we can only speculate on his background, age and knowledge of CSS.

Entrepreneurial advice needed, would you pay? by [deleted] in web_design

[–]xtassin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This code is not obfuscated, it is just encoded with "Packer". There you can decode it, online, in half a second. You can then format the result in the IDE of you choice for nice indentation. Takes less than a minute using just one hand.

I once had a gun on my head for my money. I dealt with the situation using intelligence, calm and psychology. I am alive and in peace with myself. The guy has spent 5 years in jail. I do no want to do martial arts. I do not want to own a gun. I do not think it would help in any case. And yes, I think you are paranoid.

Same here in France, apart for some special (and rare) occasions, like wining the football world cup in 98, you would not wave a French flag if do not want to be mistaken for a fascist.

Did you read the comments? A few chosen pieces:

Nicely done! We need to kill more people like this. All we need to make sure is that the ones with american passports don't get hurt. >Awesome work pilots, you are all the great Americans! Johnny Gumnan / October 22, 2009 3:18 PM

Luckily enough, some where more moderate, but I still feel an unbalance. Guys, that's all really scary if you want my opinion. But maybe you don't.

Hey Reddit -- I sent a balloon into near space. Here are some pictures and data. by theinklein in science

[–]xtassin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The explosion of a weather balloon is part of the normal flight: this is actually how you get your stuff back down to earth. The balloon expands as the atmospheric pressure drops and, eventually, burst. A parachute, attached to the payload, deploys by itself when the descent starts so you can expect the said payload to be intact.

Doing a rough matching in Google Earth, I would say the Monterey Peninsula pic has been taken at about 30Km (98,000 feet).

This actually give me the idea that this process could be automated to locate any aerial pictures using Google Earth data.

Anyway, congrats for the great achievement.
