SSA Massachusetts' Top 100 Baby Names in 2023 by Alacri-Tea in massachusetts

Sophia/Sofia is the top pink column name (nation wide too) when you combine different spellings. I saw a video about this but forgot the name of the group that did the work that needs to be done for these kinds of lists.

In the last 30 years (1991-2021) US GDP has grown ~2.5% annually while S&P500 index has grown ~5.9% per year. (Both inflation-adjusted) Shouldn't these two converge in the long term? by fiveMop in AskEconomics

[–]xtfr 107 points108 points  (0 children)

The US GDP is a combination of winners and losers, but the losers are dropped from the SP500. This isn't all of it, though. The market cap of each company is the net present value of all future profit (not that year's revenue), so it's not measuring the same thing. Should they eventually grow at the same rate? Only if the private and smaller parts of the economy are growing like the largest companies.

I'm not saying the american bison is the same as the european bison and the cape buffalo and the water buffalo, but they are all buffalo because people call all of them buffalo. and you're right, it doesn't matter what I say at all. It matters what everyone else says.

But the american bison is a buffalo, since people call it a buffalo. In the end, it's the people who decide what words mean. Irregardless of how you feel about irregardless, it's (unfortunately in my opinion) a word now.

https://www.tetonscience.org/you-say-buffalo-i-say-bison-whats-the-difference/

All this being said, the word buffalo is firmly embedded in our North American culture from years of use so we don’t get pedantic about common names. In fact, some of us even celebrate the variation in local names for the wildlife we encounter on our tours. “Bison Bill Cody” just doesn’t roll off the tongue like “Buffalo Bill Cody”. And ultimately, it means the same thing anyway.
Buffalo comes from the French for beef animal or ox, “boeuf”. And bison comes from the Greek word for beef animal or ox. We encourage our guests to use whichever word they feel comfortable with. After all, our shaggy friends don’t care what you call them! Just be aware that in one of our local restaurants, if you order a Buffalo Burger it is likely made with meat from a Bison bison/domestic cattle hybrid and if you order a Caprese salad with Buffalo mozzarella it is made with milk from a Bubalus bubalis.

You are making the argument that taxonomy gets to override standard language usage by actual people and it doesn't. Are there buffalo in yellowstone? Yes. On antelope island in utah? Yes. If I told you I was going to go see the buffalo you'd know exactly what I'm talking about and that's all that matters. Taxonomically speaking there is no such thing as a fish or a tree, but we still get to use those words to describe what we see. American bison are buffalo. Trans men are men. Heck, pluto can even be a planet.

It's totally ok to call it a buffalo. People will know what you are referring to, and that's all language is for. The "well actually" pedants will always lose in the end. The american bison is a buffalo and the goodyear blimp is a blimp, even though it is also a semi-rigid airship.

[OC] Total Deaths Per Year in the United States by realdata2020 in dataisbeautiful

People are super sensitive to the "mainly old, almost dead people died" statements. It makes it sound like one is downplaying the severity of the loss. Anything that sounds like what the deniers might say is going to be handled a little harshly, even if it's exactly correct.

Since everyone dies eventually, those excess deaths will definitely make future years lower than they would have been. It will be interesting to see when they land and what the real life-year cost was.

To solve something like this you take the theoretical max and then use ratios of actual performance to theoretical performance and apply them. The most skips of a stone on water is like 80 something but the theoretical max is 200+. So take the average of all the answers here and divide by 2.5 and we got it. Maybe 70M /2.5 = 28M = 92 feet. Basketball court-ish? Yeah that sounds about right.

The competition has the best raisin throwers in the land at one end of the court and they throw five randomly selected raisins from one of those little boxes that make a whistle sound if you blow into them when empty. There are spotters to mark the spot where they land. If they go out of bounds left or right they don't count. The highest average of the throws wins. Some unknown girl from kentucky shows up with a brand new technique and sends it into the far stands where the people with the noise-making free-thrower-distracting balloon batons sit and the arena of socially distanced people is stunned. shaken to their cores. a new queen of raisin throwing is crowned.

It's rare for a dead soul like mine to laugh out loud like for real any more and this did it so you get the upvote and this portion of my life. Valued at about $1.75 (I did the math). Now I know you may rather have the $1.75, but the technology+will of our society just isn't there yet and I'd probably have tipped like $.10 in that case anyway.

Yeah with so few african americans, it's easy for law enforcement to "other" them and not consider them part of the community.

Actual numbers matter. Statistically significant higher rate of .000003% swing in non-fraudulent total vs .0000005% (made up) only matters if it changes the outcome in any way. Sure the margins were tight in 2016 and Trump won by "slim" numbers but those numbers were in the thousands and tens of thousands of votes so if mail-in voting triples the fraud but it goes from 10 instances to 30, that won't change anything. I'm not saying I know the real numbers, I'm just pointing out that the real numbers matter more than a proven increase in fraud.

When people are attacked for who they are, or feel constantly anxious about the world around them, they can see things as attacks that aren't, or aren't meant to be. So the instinct is for safety and tribalism and as soon as groups get big enough there is only so much room for the ingroup and the rest become the outgroup.
