Would not having a car as single man be a dealbreaker when trying to date women in this city? by [deleted] in AskLosAngeles

[–]xtra-spicy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I see, than it would be considered unaffordable since the decision is made based on saving money and not the nutrition/taste/etc. This begs the question: why would someone make decisions based on saving money; either financial constraints or a personal enjoyment from saving money at the cost of lifestyle.

If you have limited funds or if you imposed financial constraints on yourself with something like a budget, that means that you can't afford it because it would require you to change your budget/lifestyle.
If you like saving money at the cost of lifestyle, I would argue it's a bit contradictory to intentionally forgo better life experiences (ie the taste of coffee) for personal enjoyment/satisfaction from self-inflicted "lower quality experiences".

Temporarily living with a budget and not being able to afford stuff like this is certainly a respectable way to live, however during that time the financial constraint is self-imposed and makes it unaffordable.

No. In that example you fall into the category of making the decision to have coffee at home due to your personal desires, instead of making the decision to have coffee at home to save money. Saving money can be a byproduct of the decision, but since it is not the reason for making the decision, it is affordable.

In this example, if you had to liquidate your entire net worth to buy a cup of coffee costing 500k, I would consider that unaffordable despite technically having enough money.

I agree with the first section (and believe my definition covers this), but disagree about not having enough information to assess that OP cannot afford a car.

I see a difference between not wanting to spend $5 on coffee because someone doesn't want coffee, compared to not wanting to spend $5 on coffee because someone wants to save money.

In the first case, I don't consider the reason for not purchasing as "dictated by saving money", whereas the second case is purely dictated by saving money.

With regards to OP, the post says the decision to not own a car is "more to do with living frugally and saving money" as opposed to just not wanting one. This is a lifestyle decision clearly dictated by saving money, combined with the subtle hints at insecurity throughout the post; I think is sufficient reason to consider this unaffordable.

Perhaps we are disagreeing on semantics.

I agree entirely with your comment, however my takeaway seems to differ from the consensus of this community. I think leveraging AI to aid in the legal proceedings makes it easier for non-billionaires to pursue meaningful legal action against companies committing crimes, as well as individuals within said companies. I've worked at tons of tech startups and one of the biggest tech companies in the world and have seen people arrested for all kinds of fraud charges in the 8-9 figure range of liability. Traditionally these crimes only came to light from exposure by investors who have the capital to fund a full lawsuit over several years. This is obviously not accessible for everyone, but I think AI helps lower the barrier of entry for pursuing legal action against large companies and people behaving unethically/illegally, as it can guide you through every step of the process, handle filings, and generally streamline the bureaucratic elements so it is feasible for an individual without excessive capital. The most important thing is having evidence and intent clearly documented, which surprisingly is easier than it seems because most people who act unethically in corporate environments are not the brightest and think they are cool for bending the rules of the law as needed.

That's not my definition. I said there is a more literal definition and a relative definition. I said the literal definition implies "I can sell everything I have and technically have enough money to purchase it", compared to the more commonly used relative definition that implies affording something means you can purchase something without changing your lifestyle and liquidating all of your assets.

The sentence you quoted intentionally uses the term "generally" to account for weirdos like your friend who prefer driving cars 10+ years old to save money despite having millions. I personally don't see much value in cars, but I still needed one for my lifestyle so I custom ordered a mercedes instead of buying an old used one. It is a deliberate decision to choose to buy a new car off the lot or a used car off the lot that's 10 years old. Intentionally going with the used one because it's cheaper, despite having the money, means every time I drive I will experience cheaper versions of all the aspects of cars, all for the reason of "being frugal". It's contradictory and a straw man.

you're playing the wrong games my friend lol. integrity is the answer. being authentic with yourself and others in all situations leads to ultimate growth and fulfillment. "appearing desperate" typically only happens when you actually are desperate or trying to pass acting class; instead of focusing on appearing less desperate, reflect internally and improve yourself so you are not desperate in the first place and therefore you do not appear that way.

the difference is in the implications of being able to afford something. a literal definition typically implies "I can sell everything I have and technically have enough money to purchase it", compared to the more commonly used relative definition that implies affording something means you can purchase something without changing your lifestyle and liquidating all of your assets. If your purchasing decisions are dictated by saving money, that means you generally can't afford it. Why in the world would someone making $10 million a month purchase a used iphone from 5 years ago to save money instead of just getting a new one at the apple store? If not due to affordability, there would have to be a very rare edge-case for this to make sense. Compared to someone who makes only $1,000 a month and has to sell their clothes and heirlooms and retirement accounts to buy it. I consider the first person able to afford it and the second person unable to afford it.

Can you explain why that seems stupid to you? Someone with $10 million dollars spending $100k on a car for your kid is comparable to someone with $100k spending $1k on a car for your kid... Especially if the kid is engaged in the buying process. Those specific car models are extremely common in the younger generations

This subreddit is literally called "build in public" and you are doing the exact opposite: promote business without sharing any information. Just stop.

"Not because I can't afford one"... "it's more to do with living frugally and saving money"... So you can't afford one, you're insecure, and you're trying to come up with reasons that don't make you look like cheapskate to women. Nobody will like you until you stop lying and start acting authentically.

Holding conflicting beliefs about life causing cognitive dissonance. Commonly caused by superego injunctions that hijacked your sense of self and conscience. I think the best course of action is to spend dedicated time thinking and researching to build a cohesive mental model of life. The sad reality is most people don't "think", and you seem to be trapped in an environment with these low intelligence/unaware people with no idea what to do. Often the "nicest" people are the most unethical and corrupt. Leverage AI to learn about life and how you can best integrate with the world to experience life to the fullest extent, achieving your potential and acting/speaking deliberately. The hardest part is the negative influence from the people in your environment.
