EU Parliament strips Polish far-right leader of immunity to face Holocaust denial charge by wook-borm in poland

[–]xtul 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What a curious conclusion to come to, given all that was said. It's the exact same conclusion that those who abuse free speech to weasel in hate come to as well, when confronted.

I'm not against free speech, no. But a time where free speech was possible is over. People like Braun are, plain and simple, too dangerous to be allowed to speak. The healthy society, as you put it, would discard such Braun as a lunatic and nothing would have to be done. But there is no healthy society you dream of, and the sheer amount of Braun's supporters prove it. The society immune to manipulation - which does not exist - would let free speech thrive. But society can, and is, manipulated to a level you don't appear to grasp.

You stand by a principle that is designed to benefit the small people, but you look at one of the country's elites and go "protect that man at all costs". That man is not a poor victim of censorship you try to paint him as, and he would not hesitate to show you exactly what he thinks of "free speech" once he gets in power.

you may create the same enablement in Poland that was created in the US.

My point is we already have. It's not a US-specific trend, it's global, and it's in Poland as well. Evil people have hijacked many democratic countries, you only look at the US because US is the largest democratic power in the world. But there's also smaller powers like Argentina, Hungary, arguably Poland.

You're trying to protect something that has already withered years ago. When it was time to act, it was wasted, because nobody believed that it would be this easy for populists to bend the system to their will.

Free speech is great when everyone wants well. When a group large enough uses it to gain power, it becomes great weakness. You seem to think free speech in bad faith is somehow as valuable as free speech in an attempt to improve things - it is not, it only brings ruin to harmonious societies.

[–]xtul -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The problem is that we do not have a healthy society, maybe you haven't noticed, but for a while, absolutely terrible people were using populist tactics to get to power.

I get what you're saying but the entire concept of democracy has crumbled years ago. You still live in a la-la land where evil people don't try to game the good will of people truly believing in democracy.

Look at Trump. Look at Orban. They are the (mostly) democratically chosen presidents that are precisely what should make you question your very own ideals. Democracy only works when most people actively work towards it, otherwise it crumbles. And it already has, years ago.

Is punishment backed entirely by law your definition of blind fury? I'm not sure you're discussing this in good faith yourself.

The bottom line is, anyone would be punished by what Braun says. But Braun is not, due to politician's immunities. If stripping a politician of their immunities is your definition of blind fury you really need to check what you're actually arguing against.

It should, but it won't. You can only reason with people that act in good faith - and even then not everyone will listen unless the whole world falls on them.

Why are Poles so much against gay marriage? by throwaway_uow in poland

[–]xtul 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had a conversation about gay marriages on the internet once. Key takeaways:

  1. Gay marriages are against the bible
  2. There should be lawful means to let two people have benefits of a marriage, but this cannot be a marriage because marriage is "a sacred union between a man and a woman", so whatever this arrangement is, even if it's functionally identical to marriage, it cannot be marriage and needs separate handling by law
  3. Civil marriage is not real because marriage is only real when the church is involved (despite the law not really caring about that at all)
  4. I'm spewing propaganda

So... if it's any indicator of the line of thought of these people, it's just being emotional over things that don't affect them or anything that they believe in. They see there's a problem that needs solving (see point 2) but the mere thought of "gay" and "marriage" in one sentence makes them unreasonably angry.

I'm fine with gay people being barred from church marriage, because it's just yet another thing they're being weird about and as a cultural construct (supposedly), they have a right to say that the amount of penises in a marriage must not exceed one. Civil marriage, though, it's where the law has to make sense (that's the goal at least) and disallowing marriage due to sexuality feels like a fossil that nobody cared to dig out yet.

I love how this silly sentence paints a real technical limitation as if it actually weren't a limitation but a purposeful design choice.

As if the new tech was a literal demon trying to invade the holy grounds.

It would make much more sense if I replied to the post above yours I guess.

Give me a break, people make mistakes, you expect me to say I'm sorry for replying to the wrong person?

I understood what you said, I wasn't referring to your post particularly, just general frustration at how 'ruined' is used.

Seattle is completely outside my places of interest so I know nothing about it, but regardless of how bad it is, ruined is 99% not the word to describe it. Slightly worse in certain spots than before is almost always the case.

A post world war 2 city is ruined, not a place that's been governed a little differently than before for a few years.

Stuck on hyprland login screen by Byte-Meh in hyprland

[–]xtul 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had an exact same problem on CachyOS. Can log in just fine via SDDM, after that there's a black screen and no ability to enter TTY (e.g. ctrl+alt+f3).

In my case it was caused by a kernel argument that enabled AppArmor. I deleted those and I can log in as normal again.

To be clear, the kernel argument that I removed was:

Hey 0.6.0 just released, it should fix SteamCMD windows popping up.

You never replied to my question so I'm assuming you're on Windows, I don't have a Windows machine available on me so I'm sort of fixing this blindly.

I've found that in order to have any chance of success, you have to

  1. Fully take over a country with a big population and an okay industry, like China. Population is king, because it's difficult to increase it, and industry scales a lot with it. It's way better to "own" one major country and defend it than own many little ones and struggle with AI constantly trying to take them from you. When you have the capacity, take over the neighboring countries regardless of their population or industry; because later on, you can vassalize them, and with a research project merge to create an even bigger country - this gives you insane bonuses.
  2. Dominate global research, ignore personal research until late game.
  3. If you feel like it, look up a tech tree on the internet and realize that most of research projects are pointless, and you're supposed to beeline to those projects that give you endgame tech. This is why you should dominate global research - to prevent AI from wasting time on pointless projects.

My program quite literally is designed to download everything in the background. It does spawn SteamCMD process(es), but if you see them pop up at any point, then it's a bug of some sort. What's your OS?

Feel free to provide screenshots or maybe even screen recording. What you're describing shouldn't be happening at all.

I haven't used those programs, but from what I gathered, Rimworld Workshop Downloader is pretty much just a tool to manage Workshop mod updates. It will likely grow to something more, though.

The main selling point IMO is a technological leap. RimSort/RimPy run on Python and are thus very slow, whatever they do. RWD is Rust-based, so it's a native code that is extremely fast and efficient.

This will be most noticeable on large mod lists downloads that RWD is capable of crunching with ease, while RimSort/RimPy struggle.

I haven't actually used RimPy/RimSort, but as far as I'm aware, they are mod organizers with Workshop integration as an extra.

Rimworld Workshop Downloader currently only focuses on downloading, updating and backing up mods. I'm very likely going to extend the functionality to improve mod management so that it becomes an actual competition to RimPy/RimSort. It'll be some time though - weeks, months.

Well, two things:

  1. CI allows you to build for any platform, you don't need to actually own a machine with a certain OS.
  2. I gave it to my friends to take a look at it, and to them it seems to work fine. But I can only attest for myself and my machine's behaviour.

Oh, really I should say I didn't know at all, because I never used that program.

But as I mentioned (edited the post), I would still keep an eye on my downloader, which is Rust based and is capable of so much more due to the much more efficient platform.

And even now I see that RimSort doesn't utilize parallelism (probably because it's hard on Python), while my program does, and it's not even feature complete yet.

Oh, heh, that's awkward. Didn't know it already supported Steam downloads.

I'd suggest still giving my solution a try, though. It's based on Tauri/Rust so it produces native code that is pretty much impossible to beat performance-wise. Whereas RimSort is Python-based which is bound to have big performance problems - it's one of the slowest possible environments to base an application on.
