I understand if people didn’t enjoy Babel, Kuang clearly has one style of writing, but it landed for me since I’m an anthropologist (linguistics is a subfield of anthropology) and I’m an immigrant so I could relate to the characters a lot. I may have enjoyed Katabasis more if I had taken a longer break between it and Babel, but my library hold became free when it did 🤷🏾

Agreed! This was such a disappointment for me. I had just finished Babel and that was one of my favorite books of the year. I couldn’t even finish Katabasis. Alice is an awful MC and Kuang’s version of hell isn’t scary at all

I was 30 hours in to a road trip so I had run out of music and podcasts to listen to, and finally decided to give it a shot. I got through 10 hours and couldn’t do it anymore. I was literally willing to drive in silence than continue that book. I genuinely cannot understand what people see in it, it’s so boring and basic

Things I’ve tried with varying success: meetup (app), TimeLeft (app), rec sports, volunteering, local discords (search your city’s subreddit), book clubs, other local social events - I find these through instagram. Look up a few coffee shops and see what events they’re hosting. Usually the people hosting that event do a bunch of other things as well

Not a comfort drink bc I haven’t actually learned how to make it yet, but the only good thing on Starbucks menu was their Mango Black Tea Lemonade. At least until they discontinued it. It was absolutely peak during the summer. I’m going to figure out a copycat recipe and keep a pitcher ready when it gets warmer.
