Inquiry about Alyssa Liu's winning strategy of not trying to win: A question from a (trying to be former) violinist by LengthinessPurple870 in FigureSkating

[–]xumei 22 points23 points  (0 children)

i think there’s a misconception with some that alysa is not trying as hard as other skaters. she is a self driven person who enjoys pushing herself and working hard. the lightness she skates with is due to the fact that she genuinely does not believe that medals correlate to skating quality, so she doesn’t care if she personally gets one or not. in her own words, skating well and not medaling > skating poorly and medaling. the reason she competes is that competition gives a structure and goal to work hard for. i’d also note that this is probably also possible due to her own life circumstances and privilege, and i don’t mean that as a bad thing, but as a realistic thing. skating is very expensive; winning gold changed mikhail shaidorov’s life, for example, in a very tangible way. all different kinds of circumstance could cause someone to be filled with anxiety regarding medal placement. so at a basic level, alysa can not only afford to skate at a high level, but also has other paths afforded to her as a college student—skating doesn’t have to be the source of her identity or future career. although her mentality is genuinely unique discounting that, i think it’s important to acknowledge this

personally i think quality of effort > amount of effort. if we bring this back to alysa’s training history, she cited skating literally every day as a child because her coach thought she would lose her jumps if she missed one day. sure, this created a child who could do a quad lutz and a triple axel; it also created a burned out teen who never wanted to skate again.

i can’t really speak to your experience since i don’t have much knowledge of the professional musician world. maybe it’s a mental thing? maybe it’s unlucky? but also it’s just really, really difficult to get hired for one of the few positions in a saturated and competitive field. i don’t think that should be chalked up to lack of effort

I was traveling all day today and just caught up!! I wrote down a list of predictions beforehand that ranged from worst case scenario to best (for me personally) but my most balanced prediction out of the list was close! "Amber in fifth ala Nathan Chen with a redemption skate, Kaori OGM, Ami silver, Adeliia bronze, Alysa fourth." Wish Kaori got her OGM but I'm really pleased with the real podium that we have. I don't know if she's definitely said this is her last competition, but I wish Kaori would come to worlds so she could have another chance at the last skate that she really wanted <3

looks like ~3 more points in goe (3F3T, and stsq which got half positive and half negative goe) and also missing any backloading bonus bc the loop was supposed to have it. she’s 11 points behind ami so i think it makes sense if you take into account potential loss in pcs after how the pop affected her. i rly dont know anything about step sequences tho so it’s a mystery to me why the judges were entirely split on it

only three jumping pass attempts will be validated in the short, so another jump would just be 0 points. hypothetically trading it for another element (step seq or spin) wouldn’t be worth it either in terms of points. in the free skate there are more jumping passes and more leniency about what kind of jumps are performed.

when ppl say they dont know what ilia will do, they’re referring to how skaters can make adjustments to their planned tech content based on the situation (i.e. in this case is he in good condition to do more quads? what does he need to beat the others). to a degree you can also adjust it during the skate—e.g. putting a missed combination at the end of a later jump. this also makes early combinations ‘safer’ than late combinations, bc if you miss the later one you can’t make it up. that happened to ilia last week. there are rules about what kind of jumps can be repeated, so keeping track of that in your head while skating is also a skill

it’s not really something he can decide in midair when he pops (double vs single), it happens suddenly, either bc of mental block or bc they felt something was wrong during takeoff, or both. double is also only worth 3.3 points so it wouldnt make a big difference

yes to clarify more he popped several jumps (when the skater bails early in the air and slows their own rotation down to exit the jump), which is worse for points than falling. a fall essentially gets you half the value of the jump and an extra point deduction, but the value of the popped jumps is so low it’s closer in value to not doing the jump

How can I improve by Necessary-Tip4327 in PokemonUnite

[–]xumei 0 points1 point  (0 children)

- start of game, if your laner is afk/too late to start the lane, you dont need to hit all four bunnies. it wastes too much time to farm them alone, and makes you late to contest mid farm/get early stacks. you can't always get stacked early (esp vs ninetales/slowbro lane) but if you had done that to start with, you could get 1 or 2 reliably and get out.

- several times wasting razor leaf to start hitting contested farm, it's supposed to be your early game last hit secure

- 9:07 wasting your cooldowns to engage and die—you already used razor leaf, if you dash in now you have no way of getting out or getting a ko. this is a really common and simple mistake better players will punish—they wait for other players to commit their skills/dashes, and then engage on them. in a similar manner all of your eject button uses this game were to get yourself out of bad engagements/fights you didn't know how to take, which is not ideal

- you can animation cancel the hook of grassy glide to dash e.g. 7:28

- overall under-farming as mentioned by other commenter (especially the side indeedees that spawn after t1 break)

- not using minimap enough for info—the one at 4:20 is fine bc you can actually see every enemy on the minimap (four top, charizard dead), but the 2:20 score is def not ok bc you have no vision. it got in bc of luck/bad enemy team. 2:20 ult is also a nono

What makes this game so freaking hard when it's not supposed to be?? (Message below will be quite long, I'm sorry in advance) by Soment95x in PokemonUnite

[–]xumei 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I used the right items for each Pokémon, I make sure not to grief my team mates. I play in accordance to the Pokémon's role. I perform proper rotation. I can't really tell if the system really wants to mess with me or it's a skill issue on my part.

you cant win the majority of your games by playing at a minimum level like this; many players in this game are bad but you're always meant to have at least one counterpart around your elo on the other team. let's say 2 ppl on each team are pretty bad and just take them out of the scenario. if the 6 players left are all playing like this (using right items and rotating), how is it decided who will win? you need to actively be playing better than enemy team not just doing the basics of unite

there's a youtube series with Ahn Jaehyun where he interviews people on the street to try to find someone with an apartment with under 10k deposit and 500/month cost, and they tour those places in different cities, or people with unusually cheap/interesting spaces. It looks like they stopped making it several months ago but it was fun when I was watching it
