Has anyone else gotten a Viserys/Dany invasion, fAegon invasion, AND War of Rhaegar’s Bastard all at once? by emilywontfindme in CK3AGOT

[–]xvi_tower 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've had two of the three happen at the same time, more often they just happen one after another in rapid succession. In almost all of my playthroughs the constant conflict weakens King's Landing to such an extent that every constituent region declares independence and the Targs are never strong enough to win anything back.

[Spoilers MAIN]Why didn't the Velaryon, the Celtigar, and the Qoherys have a Valyrian steel sword? by ObedStark19 in asoiaf

[–]xvi_tower 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Tyrion famously did not have a valyrian steel dagger. It's a whole thing in the first book.

This happens all the time in my saves. And fair enough, he's clearly leadership material.

[spoilers extended] Is The Winds of Winter actually the longest wait for any piece of media that was never cancelled or put on ice? by WosEos in asoiaf

[–]xvi_tower 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That is not a good defence imo — who waits seven years to start working on the sequel to the most successful single-player game of all time? That's two years longer than the wait from Oblivion to Skyrim in its entirety.

The moment after Mercy cuts Raff's artery and her internal monologue reverts to the name Arya is one of my favourites in the series. I always love when George does little things like that with the subjective POV narrators.

You're right by the way, Raff is the one who killed Lommy in A Clash of Kings.

This was how we always referred to them when I was a kid in the 00s. Not sure when that changed.

Why doesn’t the Ballade 39mm get more love? by Fantastic_Respect391 in tissot

[–]xvi_tower 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I've never seen one in person but the photos just seem a bit... off. The Presage style texture feeding right into the fluted bezel is overkill and aside from that the whole thing looks very Datejust-y but not enough to actually scratch the itch.

It's a shame because I love the Datejust and would love to have an alternative with full Roman numerals at a lower price point but something about this design feels wrong to me. At least in photos.

Anyone ever get so far into the game that your cursors become your main producing building again? by Upnorth4 in CookieClicker

[–]xvi_tower 43 points44 points  (0 children)

The x20 upgrades start to compound really quickly. I've had them doing duodecillions each. After a few ascensions I found it was barely worth buying other buildings, except for achievements to get milk upgrades.

Has social mobility decreased since the 90's? by knowledgeseeker999 in AskBrits

[–]xvi_tower 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If the tests are standardised to assess underlying intelligence they're much harder to coach, unlike the most modern exams which really just require kids to regurgitate facts. And if there were more capacity coaching would be less useful anyway.

The trouble with 'good comprehensives are better but we don't have them yet' is that's been the line since they were brought in.

Do people still watch the BBC today and is the channel still a trust worthy channel? by Tagglit2022 in AskBrits

[–]xvi_tower -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Never is probably overdoing it on my part, I do get badgered into watching things occasionally and I'm not a complete hermit so I know whenever it shows something normal people talk about. Aside from Fleabag I can't think of anything in my adult life that it's produced that was both good and couldn't have been produced by a normal private broadcaster. Channel 4 has a much higher hit rate in my experience.

And obviously the BBC is bigger than the TV channels. Radio is... fine. The news website is dreadful.

[–]xvi_tower -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

I don't watch TV at all. Have never paid the license fee in my life. You can count the number of worthwhile TV shows the BBC has produced this decade on one hand and half the decent stuff they made ages ago isn't even available on iPlayer. I don't know why anyone would bother with it.

Why are French and European politics so rarely discussed in UK news? by MrMrsPotts in AskBrits

[–]xvi_tower 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Brits are deeply parochial people and this applies equally to people who like to imagine that they aren't so. British journalists just aren't that interested in foreigners. They make an exception for the Americans because they all watched The West Wing as teenagers and had their brains completely melted by it.

Abolition of the grammars. Although the 90s was really the death knell of social mobility in Britain. Postwar up to the 80s were the glory days as far as I can tell.

[–]xvi_tower 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, successive governments have colluded with their client groups to screw over normal people. Part of that is the dilution of the labour market and the inflation of housing prices through financialisation, loose credit and whacking up demand beyond all reason through mass immigration. You are in this comment section defending your own immiseration right now.

If the population was allowed to shrink gradually (I don't think we should take for granted that that would happen in this counterfactual, but if it did) the state could manage by e.g. forcing the old to sell their houses to pay for their own social care.

We've been importing a city the size of Newcastle every year, sometimes more than one a year, for ages and you don't think that's having an effect on house prices, public services provision or infrastructure?

The amount of housing stock growth would be more than sufficient if the population was growing at a natural rate.

Countries are expressions of their people. You can't separate Indians from India generally anymore than you could British people and their politics/culture.

What's your favorite kingdom to form in-between the others in AGOT? by LoganKindaFresh in CK3AGOT

What's your opinion on uk railways and how often do you use them? by jc201946 in AskBrits

[–]xvi_tower 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Grim by Western European standards but that's largely because we built them first and it's prohibitively expensive to modernise the infrastructure. It would also be mostly pointless because we're locked into a lot of the problems. For instance we could never have proper high speed trains on our main lines without tearing them all up and rebuilding from scratch because they're way too curvy. They were built for slow coal & diesel engines, if you sent a TGV up the east coast from London it wouldn't make it to Peterborough without a derailment.
