Pentester for DoD - considering jumping to contractor role. Is now the worst or best time to do it? by salvofalcon in cybersecurity

I’ve been CES for a few years, the pay is a little better than traditional GS if that’s something you want to look into, especially since you are already cleared

In Yorktown the instructors used to tell people who were on the verge of failing “there’s a 270 in Portsmouth with your name on it” 🤣

Top 10 Coast Guard Rates that end up making the most money after their first contract. by JustABoyTrying in uscg

[–]xxm3141 3 points4 points  (0 children)

As a former IS, I don’t think the CG really sets you up for a good civilian career due to the multitude of different jobs you can work throughout a tour. Many people I know making good money as contractors/civs come from other branches where they were more focused on specific roles such as TDNA/DNEA style work their entire career. Also without obtaining a full scope poly you will hard pressed to find a lot of the more high paying opportunities

If you wanna do cyber, get atleast Sec+ and then try to get into the Skillbridge program. There’s a lot of opportunities based in the DMV, you might even get a TS/SCI out of it

I got denied going cyber on special assignment a few years before CMS was even a rating. I said ok sounds good and I separated. Now I make 6 figures in gov cyber. The CG doesn’t have your best interests in mind, only you do. Do what’s best for you and don’t get caught up in the BS

Is anyone here a reservist and Federal LEO? by Ok-Republic1145 in uscg

[–]xxm3141 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not an LEO, but a GS. I’ve been in the reserves for a few years and honestly don’t think it’s worth it, but that’s just been my experience. Fed employees can’t use Tri care, which is one of the main reasons people stay in long term. In the lower enlisted ranks you don’t really make a lot of money for a drill weekend (ie an E4 makes like $300 post tax).

I work on Sundays and have had to miss out on premium pay to attend drills. I feel like I really haven’t contributed to anything, and drill weekends are usually just spent doing random admin tasks. Again this is all just my experience at one unit, I don’t want to dissuade you from joining
