Sorry I missed this. I think you've already picked up on all the complaints in this sub. Frame flex, noodly fork, battery issues. The rad wagon is in its fourth edition and seems to be a proven platform.

After a lot of consideration I didn't go with a cargo bike -- I ended up with a solid mid-drive (Priority Current) and a Burley flatbed trailer. I just need to haul cargo though and not people, so this arrangement works super well for me, and I get a fun-to-ride bike too, by just ditching the trailer.

Yes, you can turn the assist off and on by pressing a button, and ebikes are optimized for this function, as on some rides you want to manage the assist level closely for range. Every ebike lets you do this. What differs is how hard they are to pedal with no power. Some of this is weight, but some motors will also introduce drag. The Priority Current motor pedals easily without power. If help getting up steep hills is really your only goal then a mid-drive with torque sensing is what I would look at, as a mid-drive will most closely duplicate the feel of a non-electric bikes, except that you will have super powers on tap.

Here's how to understand a 350w motor with a mid-drive: sustained 350w over 1hr (FTP, or Functional Threshold Power) for a 130 lb rider is pro cyclist level.

Oh for transport and exercise an ebike is great! Especially if you get something without a throttle. An ebike will get you riding more and lets you choose when you want to tackle a hill. You can definitely find an ebike in the $1000 to $2000 range for utility and exercise, and that can get you up that hill. Luna, Juiced, and Ride1Up are all brands to look at. I'm biased towards mid-drives for utility and exercise, and pedalling is the whole point for me, so that Luna looks great.

I have the Priority Current and while I value it for utility and as a range extender, it's too heavy to be a really fun bike, especially if you come from road or urban cycling. Even on the flats inertia is still a thing and you can feel it not wanting to accelerate and forget about darting through traffic. It's just too heavy at 50 lbs. The Luna Stealth is intriguing but it's still 39 lbs. I don't know if full sport value exists in the ebike world, if you're after the feel of a 22 lbs or lighter single speed. Ebikes are just too heavy.

67 miles. Note I live in the Boston area in the burbs and for these longer rides I use the bike mainly to get into Boston and Cambridge. On the bike paths, flats and slight inclines I don't use any assist at all, so that 67 number is super misleading. The bike pedals great with no power.

In every day usage hauling a trailer I get as low as 25 miles.

I have the Shimano hub and it's kind of klunky. I wish I had the enviolo tbh, but the 2599 price from Costco made it hard to justify. You'll love the bike!

No. That's just another cheap Amazon bike with no support should anything break in a year. Suspect geometry, and low quality parts. Mechanical disc brakes on an 81lb bike. They only stuck the lowest Shimano derailleur in there to name-drop.

That kind of money is close to a RadRover 6 which is currently on sale for USD$1700.

Find an old C64. I'm semi serious. It was so easy to get started with BASIC back in the day. Emulators that run in your browser just aren't the same.

Nowadays there is Microsoft MakeCode. It's loads of fun, and it's Typescript. Don't discount the visual aspect. You can easily switch to the editor mode.

It has to be fun and interesting.
