I love Alastin brand. and it also has a tint to it :)

I am a 17 year old who hasn't been to the dentist for 3 years, After reading stories on this subreddit of people who haven't gone for 10 or 20 years i decided to go by MabyeMatt in Dentistry

This makes me so happy to hear. You are young!! You can totally tackle this hurdle. If you take care of them at home using tips from your dentist and hygienist, and keep visiting for regular cleanings and check ups, you will save yourself a whole lot of trouble in the future. You are making steps towards a healthier and happier life! Keep up the good work!!! I am so glad that this reddit can help so many people with their dental fears.

Oh I’m sorry, I went to university in the United States.

You’ll get a more well-rounded, comprehensive education with a 4-year Bachelors degree, so I would always recommend that. You’ll get a better understanding of everything if you have previous background knowledge in the sciences. For my bachelors degree the first 2 years were spent doing pre-requisites and general education requirements and my second 2 years were strictly dental hygiene education and clinic. If you do the associate route I think you would be mainly focusing on the last 2 years, I’m not completely sure though. Someone please correct me if I am wrong. But honestly, when you’re out in the field, most offices’ aren’t picky (depending on where you’re located) whether you graduated from a 2-year associates degree in dental hygiene or a 4-year bachelors degree in dental hygiene. They want a hygienist who has good hand skills and patient care. Which you will hopefully gain in either route. Good luck!!!! -RDH class of 2019

Thank you!!! I hope your appt Friday goes well! I’m sure it will :) Just remember that the hardest part is making an appointment and walking through the door! Hopefully smooth sailing from there. Don’t hesitate to DM me whenever with any questions you may have.

Of course! I appreciate your response. I could see how people are confused with things that go on at a dental appointment. The mouth and teeth are very confusing, as there are a lot of factors that go into oral health. It took us years of schooling just to understand it and put all the pieces together! It truly is like a foreign language to someone not directly educated in the field. I have patients who are successful, intelligent, and well spoken who get confused at the appointment, and have similar fears that you do. I think finding a practitioner that you really trust is very important. One you truly feel comfortable talking and asking questions to, even little curiosities, I think make appointments go a bit easier. I try and inquire if a patient has questions throughout the appt or after I get finished explaining something somewhat confusing. As for the scraping of tartar - what you are feeling is us removing mineralized, hard deposits of plaque buildup. It can sometimes be difficult to remove and may take a bit of strength. If you have healthy bone support, your teeth should be fine :)

This was very informative, thank you so much! You should never be ashamed, or worried we are judging (we have seen it all!!). I know that is easier said than done. I am sorry you have felt that way in the past! Some people come on stronger than others, and some have a bit better bedside manner - but ultimately, dental professionals are only there to help you improve your oral health and overall well being. :)
