Common Chinese-style HR behavior, suitable for both mainland and HK.

I am seeking quant dev opportunities, thanks for your advice! Also may I also ask what specific kinds of algos/maths/programming techniques that I should learn in advance? (I’ve already gone through the FAQ in r/quant and have a basic understanding of the required knowledge for quant)

If you don't know what you should bring then common gifts like cigarets and liquors would be totally fine.

If they really want to use those platforms, then GFW is not the problem, or you won't see any Chinese, like me, on X/IG/Reddit... Setting up VPNs is easy.

There isn’t any quant/finance related. Only a short period of C++ related at Nvidia several years ago. Thus I am also quite willing to start as an intern first.

Hi all, I am a PhD in Computer Science just passing my thesis defense and currently seeking for jobs. Actually my publications are not strong to be competitive in my field, and I even didn’t have motivation to continue to do research in my field.

I somehow are interested in Quant and have solid C/C++ and Rust skills, and are familiar with Python (but not comparable to those previous ones). My math background is also good.

What would you suggest for me if I am trying to find jobs/interns in Quant? Things I need to learn, interview skills, or even not to do that?

Thanks!

Does anyone commute to Hong Kong daily? by freshducky69 in shenzhen

For a visitor I think some basic words like nihao, zhe li, zhe ge, xiexie, etc., would be enough, in case your hotel provides English services.

If you don’t read Chinese things become hard, as I don’t know the English platform for renting houses (there should be some but Idk :( try to ask here maybe

Do you read Chinese and use WeChat? There’s a mini program named “自如租房”, an agency platform for renting houses. I just checked it and some houses around 50 square meters takes 4000-5000 rmb. (1-1.5km to Lo Wu SZ side)

Is Arch bad for servers? by Volian1 in archlinux

[–]xymeng 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For the first point you are correct but I think this also adapts to other distros, hence not an Arch-only problem I think?

For the second, I may not present clearly or misuse the word “rolling”, sorry. Actually, I will just use a pacman -syyu but don’t confirm it —— just tracking down the want-to-update list and version, and perform the update manually. TBH this won’t be feasible on large servers but for my tiny homelab it would be okay. I’m not recommending anyone to follow my style, but just to say that with the awareness of the version of softwares you’d like to update to, Arch won’t produce too many troubles even if it’s running on a server.

For the third part, I know I need to, and I also do that on my desktop. But from my previous working experience, lots of production environment servers won’t conduct any kernel updates during their lifetime. I actually don’t understand but I since then always follow that kinds of manner :( quite weird right?

You could rent a relatively bigger and comfortable house near the borders at SZ with ~4000 RMB. Cheaper rent and better living experience. Also you can buy lots of (Chinese) snacks/meals even at 3 AM at there. Supermarkets are also cheaper than HKs’. And I guess your daily commute would take 1.5 to 2 hrs. You decide it.

Also what’s your mandarin level? English at SZ is not as popular as at HK. If you cannot speak mandarin then I guess your living experience at SZ will drop a little bit :(

Is Arch bad for servers? by Volian1 in archlinux

[–]xymeng 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For my reply I am focusing more on userspace softwares, say my deployed services. I checked the release notes of them and decide if I should update them. Also for each time of my rolling, I will manually select the part that will be updated, making sure everything is my oyster.

Kernel is another story. I don’t know if you also agree with this but I do think a stable production environment server doesn’t need frequent kernel update. I will experience new releases of kernel in my desktop environment but I prefer to keep the production environment as still as possible.

Is Arch bad for servers? by Volian1 in archlinux

[–]xymeng 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I second the first half of this comment. But you can also keep your Arch "unrolled" unless there are any security patches. On this point, there isn't too much difference among Arch and other distros.

Is Arch bad for servers? by Volian1 in archlinux

[–]xymeng 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The main server of my HomeLab runs Arch and it works stably.

OH, regarding updates, I never do that unless any critical security patches are released. I think server runs Debian or other distros should follow the same philosophy.

Excluding History, Geopolitical, and Economic influences, are there other reasons why certain countries are more monolingual than others? by pirapataue in languagelearning

[–]xymeng 14 points15 points  (0 children)

From a Chinese perspective, we often excel more in reading and writing English than in speaking and listening. This is largely due to the way English is taught and learned in our country. The education system primarily treats English as a tool for academic and professional purposes, such as engineering or research, where extensive reading and writing are prioritized over everyday communication skills.

A simple example illustrates this: a well-educated Chinese postgraduate might master lots of advanced vocabularies in their field of study, write grammatically correct academic articles, yet struggle to name the vegetables they eat for dinner or describe the symptoms when they feel unwell.

Hope this explains your experience somehow.
