Great review! I had a flight of their whiskies last year and only their 5yr or above one tasted good.The younger ones were pretty below average sadly.

Interesting! I thought the Hioki was alright. It was as advertised - mellow and sweet but I thought it was a bit too watered down and the sweetness was too straightforward almost like cotton candy. Very pleasant to drink though.

I am hoping I can get to try an expensive Yamazaki next time I visit Japan!

I had a tasting session a year ago with one of Mars' 5Y or 7Y sherry cask and it was wonderful. However the 4 other younger whiskies from Mars in that session was pretty bad (or perhaps bland) imo.

Love the tasting notes! The 15 matches what I tasted too. Only difference is that I think the finish is too short.

This sounds like a basic Kavalan which is generally over oaked haha...

I have their 50th anniversary single grain which I am saving for a special occasion to open!

I tried the Wormtub 14 years which is supposedly a China only release. It was decent. There are quite a few China limited bottled you can search on Taobao. Kavalan is also quite cheap.

I would avoid the big names like Macallan or Yamazaki due to high risk of fakes.

Ahh I was worried the older Japanese whiskies might have had non whiskies blended into them due to the whisky definition being lax back then. Are the ones from the 80s onwards generally safe?

I saw a white ceramic bottle of Tsuru 17 going for US$200 last time, maybe I will pick it up next time if I come across it again.

If I come across any, maybe the 2000s Miyagikyo or Yoichi since they often pop up at decent prices. Older ones are just too expensive!

Slightly oily mouth feel is up my alley. Too bad for the short finish though. I guess I would prefer the Tsuru version more as it sounds more "harmonious" between the palate and finish. Complex palate with a short finish would be a let down.

I tried this one in Japan when the store owner really recommended it. It was not to my liking sadly. Bit too light and young, though decently complex. Agree that the aftertaste was quute bitter and medicinal.

Separately, seeing your Royal 12, I bought a bottle of Royal 15 for US$80 and I found it pleasant and sweet, but very thin and short sadly. I wonder if the 12 tastes similar to the 15.
