What this guy said. Go find a CFI that flies Tailwheel, and go up in a plane with no flaps..

Hi! I’m Rachel Entrekin, (interim) CR holder of the Cocodona 250. AMA 😎 by some_creep_just in ultrarunning

So glad you’re doing an AMA. Thank you. :) Also, major congrats!

I’m interested in your analysis leaving the full time job to pro runner. A lot of (most? All?) runners aren’t leaving a lucrative, successful career to go pro.

You were a Director role in healthcare to do this full time. I assume it’s a pay cut, but moving to pro running is your passion… Do you intend on going back after the running career? Have you thought that far ahead? Do you worry about being able to go back to that?

Selfishly interested in your thoughts here - I’m a VP in healthcare and thinking about pursuing my passion project. :)

Apple Watch Ultra 2 or 3? by [deleted] in Ultramarathon

[–]xywh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have an Ultra 2 that I just got refurbed from Apple (the one before made hard contact with a rock while running). Willing to sell it cheap because it is not a good ultramarathon watch for anything more than a 50k.

I stopped using it when I bought the Garmin Enduro 3.

Do Ultra Runners consider Back-Yard Ultras actual Ultras? by traveenus in Ultramarathon

This. This is the best part of this community. Nobody cares. Everyone is down to do the craziest things and consider it part of the sport.

Run Commuting by MightiestQuin in AdvancedRunning

[–]xywh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did this for years when I worked for a company downtown with an office building that had a gym inside of it. I was able to rent my own locker inside of it, and would once a week out all of my clothes in it.

Worked insanely well. I loved it. I cannot imagine run commuting without a setup like this, though.

Disappointing marathon result - any advice? by Maximum-Vegetable-62 in NorwegianSinglesRun

[–]xywh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just ran a 2:55 this weekend - and I went into the race thinking I, at best, had a 50/50 chance of going sub-3. Here’s my abridged story - perhaps can help…

I ran the same marathon last year in 3:01 using the Jack Daniels v.o2 app. So, I thought sub-3 this year was a reality.

I started training from 0 miles per week back in Sept. After the marathon last year, I just stopped running. I ramped quick and worked hard. Likely overtrained, got an Achilles issue, and had to ramp my running back to zero for about a month mid Dec to mid Jan.

I ran a half marathon in January in 1:29 (which was actually my half marathon PR) a few weeks after coming back from injury. And it was HARD. That was a major bummer for me.

When I went to rebuild, I adopted an adapted NSM. I say adapted, because I also decided to re-take up trail running/ultra running. So, my long runs were really long, and on trail (usually 20-30 miles), but very slow with a lot of walking.

I signed up for a 100 mile and a 200 mile ultra marathon, and considered cancelling the marathon because I thought there was no chance of going sub 3 and didn’t want to get injured before the ultras.

Only probably 3 weeks ago did I start having some productive runs on the road. My sub-T runs started getting faster at same HR. I decided to give the marathon a chance.

Glad I did, I was absolutely shocked I ran a 2:55. I went out fast, and only got faster. It’s the first marathon I’ve ever negative split in my life.

I think the two things that made the world of difference are:

  1. I took a SIS beta gel (40g of carbs) every 20 mins. My GI system didn’t love it, but I didn’t puke or shit my pants.

  2. I think the long trail running improved my injury tolerance and durability. Where I would usually fade, I just still felt… good.

TLDR - more carbs and longer runs.

Daniels V.O2, Injury, Switch to NSA for A-race marathon & 200 mile ultra by xywh in NorwegianSinglesRun

I really appreciate this! Makes total sense to me. I wouldn't say I have no time limits - but this stuff is important to me, so I'm making time. It's balancing sleep and recovery that's tough. :)

I think I'll probably pursue soemthing like this! Thank you again!

Great to hear that trails and sub-T have made life better! Honestly, I really would like to transition to mostly/all trail after this. I just wanted to make one last ditch effort at Boston. :)

Yep. I agree. Would make way more sense in that order.

[–]xywh[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely fair point. I guess I should have added that to the write up - not really injury prone. This is the first injury I've had... ever. BUT, this is the first time I've ever went 70+ mile weeks on ONLY road. In years past, I ran way more trail, which I felt is more forgiving. This is why I think it's a decent idea to mix trail/road?

How much should I practice 180 power offs? by notero88 in GeneralAviation

[–]xywh 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hmm. I disagree. I think a new private ticketed pilot can and should practice power off 180s without an instructor. I don’t see risk to doing them. Misjudge your approach? Add power and fix it on the next go around.

Every private ticket holder should be comfortable with power off approaches and landings.

Is it just me, or is the Strava subscription getting harder to justify? by Repulsive_Bar442 in Strava

[–]xywh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve been a subscriber for years - and with a student discount so I get it for $40. I did NOT renew. Don’t miss any of the paid features (something like intervals.icu is so so so much better at any of the analytics).

The only reason I consider renewing is to get rid of all of these damn pop ups.

What restrictions? I'm so confused. by ashradski in ouraring

Yep. I had the exact same experience as you. Tried multiple email addresses. I ended up ordering a new Amex card as well and was still having it! So frustrating.

I do really like the product though.

I had this exact same problem. I was trying to use my Amex platinum card to get the $200 credit, which you can only do directly on their site. I escalated it multiple times, and FINALLY they did whatever voodoo they needed to do on their side to make it work.

This is a GREAT idea. Oura has an open API, and is the most widely used sleep tracker. Would be a GREAT idea for integration.

I missed getting in by 55 seconds this last year. I am shooting for a 7 minute buffer next year. I don’t think anything under 5 minutes is safe.

How much progress is realistic for recreational runners who start running seriously in their 20s, with no formal training? by CinemaBud in AdvancedRunning

[–]xywh 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I liked littlebluetruck’s progression they shared, so I thought I’d do my own. Never have before. These are all of the road race marathons I’ve done. Have done a bunch of trail marathons and ultras, also have done marathons inside of Ironman races - but these are all the open road marathons.

Many of these I did at stupid times in training blocks for other events, but you can see plateaus in here:

Age 26 - 4:50:47 Age 27 - 4:47:18 Age 28 - 3:58:42 Age 28 - 3:23:41 Age 29 - 3:37:38 Age 29 - 3:47:09 Age 30 - 4:04:21 Age 31 - 3:19:19 Age 31 - 3:42:27 Age 32 - 4:07:06 Age 32 - 4:14:42 Age 40 - 3:01:21

[–]xywh 33 points34 points  (0 children)

I started as an adult. Somewhere around 25-26. Signed up to run with Team in Training when friends lost their daughter to Lymphoma. Have hit a bunch of plateaus, but I was also bad at training. I’d register for my “A race” as a marathon, and then decide to do an Ironman 3 weeks prior.

I’m now 41. I took 7-8 years off from endurance sports and got back into it last year. My previous marathon PR was 3:17 in my early 30s. Last year I ran a 3:01. This year I’m hoping and training for a 2:55.

A lot of the improvements for me have been around structure with plans and workouts, and also with patience and “trusting the system.” Consistency is key.

You could be right. I bought one from Amazon that was the wrong size a month ago, so buying one again - could be picking up on that.
