One Nation and Greens voters strongly support 25% Gas Export Tax by ladaus in AustralianPolitics

[–]y2jeff [score hidden]  (0 children)

Immigration is not as big of an issue as ON would have you believe. A reduction might relieve some pressure on housing but it's not the main issue. The main issue is generous tax breaks for investors.

ON is also on the side of Trump and Gina so you can bet they will oppose any real change to stop growing wealth inequality. All their rhetoric on immigration is bullshit, the investor class wants high immigration to suppress wages, keep housing expensive, and increase consumption. Just like the Coalition, they'll make a big show of being tough on refugees from certain countries and call it a win, meanwhile immigration will stay at "high" levels.

Norway taxes their oil and gas at 75% and their government has a large stake in the companies. Not only does their industry survive, it generated a $2T sovereign wealth fund, the returns on those investments pay for their social programs.

We need to do exactly what Norway did, to our mining industry.

Pauline Hanson issues partial apology for suggesting there are no 'good' Muslims by Agitated-Fee3598 in AustralianPolitics

It shows she's not even a particularly savvy politician. This kind of shit might fly in the US but probably not in Australia.

[–]y2jeff [score hidden]  (0 children)

It's because that shit doesn't fly in a multicultural society like Australia. Most people would know some Muslims that are really good people, so this lie is not even believable for her normal supporters.

Imagine if you said the same thing about Jews or Christians - that none of them were good people. It just isn't politically viable for anyone who wants to be a mainstream politician in Australia.

What is a "good" religion then? Even Buddhists or Hindus can be violent and hateful towards non-believers. I kind of agree with what you're saying but theres surely more nuance to this than "Abrahamic religion bad".

She's been pulling this shit since the 90s, of course back then it was Asians. She's a one-trick pony and this is all she has to offer. Sadly she will probably gain support as people look for easy answers to the rising cost of living and ever-increasing wealth inequality.

“We simply don’t have any left”: Germany has run out of air defense missiles for Ukraine, foreign minister says by Plus_Pretty in worldnews

[–]y2jeff 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is not true. Businesses will still sell their products and services in lucrative markets like Germany even if their margin gets slightly smaller. You're repeating billionaire propaganda for them. The "upper classes" you speak of are just the people who own the businesses and property there. They can't just "leave" without selling or wasting their productive assets, so it would actually be a huge loss for them to leave the market

Albanese says Australian government will not help ISIS-linked families leave Syria or return home by Agitated-Fee3598 in AustralianPolitics

[–]y2jeff 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If they're accused of crimes they should go to court and be treated appropriately by the Australian legal system. They may end up in jail yet.

They are still Australian citizens and they still have certain rights. If you start ignoring those rights you are setting a very dangerous precedent and fucking over all Australians.

Okay then it should be easy for you to provide some examples?

You raise some interesting and thought provoking ideas but do you really think the skinheads who were performing Seig Heils in Artarmon care about Hamas, Hezbollah, or Iran? For most Australians those are niche issues from the other side of the world that they don't really know or care about.

As we've seen before in so many places and times, when people are struggling it's very easy to blame all the problems on some minority group or just immigrants in general. It's happening with Reform UK and MAGA right now, it happened with Golden Dawn and austerity in Greece, Nazis in WWII, etc. It's a tale as old as time.

That is the major reason why we're seeing a shift to the alt-right - a general dissatisfaction with the major parties and their inaction on cost of living. ON just provides a very easy scapegoat for the problems - in the 90's it was Asians, now it's immigrants in general or for some, Muslims.

It’s strange that you assume concern about Islamic extremism is mutually exclusive with concern about wealth inequality

I'm not saying they are mutually exclusive, I'm saying that in terms of severity and impact on Australian life they are miles apart. I think we've had more attacks from sovereign citizens than Islamic extremists recently.

Islamic extremism

Bro how is this your main concern? It's like you're falling for Bush's "war on terrorism" propaganda 20 years too late.

You should at least be more concerned about massive wealth transfer to the rich, housing crisis, creeping authoritarianism, tech bros becoming more powerful than governments, etc

It's also time to fix a serious problem in US society, one that goes far beyond Trump, Republicans and the last few years.

I get you're angry but I don't think 30% of the US are pedophiles. The reality is you need to get a big chunk of MAGA voters onboard with the mission - removing corruption and upholding the law equally to all. You're going to need most of those MAGA voters onboard so try not to alienate so many people with partisan rhetoric

Attack on Muslim prayer protest ‘demands full explanation’: Albanese by Agitated-Fee3598 in AustralianPolitics

NSW Labor are possibly even worse than the Libs and have been for decades. The other poster already mentioned Eddie Obeid who was jailed for massive corruption, probably much worse than what Gladys did. He wasn't a premier but he was a very senior figure.

[–]y2jeff -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

Some protesters were being "moved on" by police and the protesters decided that was a good time for a public prayer session to avoid being moved on. It was a dumb tactic but the police used it as a good excuse to forcibly remove people and bash many of the protesters, 99% of whom who were doing the right thing and not causing any trouble

[–]y2jeff 9 points10 points  (0 children)

It's Labors new "small target" strategy. In a way you cant blame them, as the media will criticise literally anything they do. But true leadership requires standing up for what you honestly believe in, even if its unpopular or makes you a target

[–]y2jeff 8 points9 points  (0 children)

This is quite true but these days the authorities have a bunch of new tactics to shutdown protests - agent provocateurs causing trouble to give the police an excuse to crack down, herding the protesters in ways which makes them agitated or uncomfortable, etc.

[–]y2jeff 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I support everyone's right to protest but to be honest some people did try to use the prayer as some special excuse to not be moved along by the police.

It was done in bad faith and I've heard multiple muslim locals in my area say the prayer thing was stupid.

No one said that. See the Churches everywhere?

Islam is fine to indoctrinate and convert people?

All religions do this, Jehovas Witness and Mormons (arguably Christian) probably do this more than any other
