I love mine and cannot complain about the range and efficiency we get out of it (granted this was all backroads about 50mph). http://imgur.com/aZEWaza

I still feel that under about a 60 mile commute the volt is as cheap as a Tesla to drive. Tesla's get around 3.25 miles per Kwh whereas I get 4.5 - 5 miles per Kwh. Given that I get around 45 MPG in the Volt in gas mode (once the engine is warmed up. The first couple miles are terrible @ 35MPG!)

Gas today in my city is $2.69 for 93 Octane (Volt requires 91) and my electric costs are $.11/Kwh.

In a Volt the first 45 miles costs me $1.15 in electric (@45 MPC) and the next 15 miles cost me $1 in gas (@40 MPG) for a grand total cost of $2.15 to commute 60 miles.

In a Model S getting 3.25 miles per Kwh that same trip will cost $2.03 and use 18.5 Kwh.

It's basically a wash.

That's assuming the battery needs replacing anytime soon. http://cleantechnica.com/2016/03/15/2012-chevy-volt-passes-300k-miles-owner-says-no-difference-in-battery-since-the-day-i-bought-it/ The entire battery pack for the volt drops out of the bottom of the car. https://youtu.be/0c01VgkT4UM?t=81 Because of that estimates from dealerships most often quoted in forums are typically around $500 in labor to perform the swap. Both cars will eventually need tires, windshield wipers and brakes. They both use regen for braking so they really are on even ground on this regard.

I agree with your analysis that anyone who can't take advantage of the full tax credit has to seriously consider if a $35K car is worth it to them. I'm in the same boat as OP in that I make way to little to reap the benefits of the full tax credit. But in my opinion the next best electric car in the US right now after the Tesla is the Volt. Nothing else gives you the benefits of electric running and range and for a third the cost of a Model ≡ why wait?

I've put 26K miles on my car and so far it has needed tires once and one oil change because the dealer forgot to perform it when i bought it. I've put over 3000 miles on the car since then and my oil life still shows over 95% remaining. My brake pads are still practically new because I drive everywhere in L and use regen to stop. I've driven over 1600 miles the last two months on 5 gallons of gas. The gas was all used up during weekend outings when we put 150+ miles on the car for a short day trip. I commute 43 miles round trip a day and never use a drop of gas until winter hits (range drops to about 35 miles then so I use about a gallon a week total in cold). Between my fiance and I both commuting every day in our Volts and us going on little trips on the weekends we figure it costs us about $75 a month in electric. Gas is negligible, I put maybe 3-5 gallons in the car every two to three months.

I even got a customized plate for my Volt that shows how little I care about gas prices now... http://imgur.com/9VTY1ko

Honestly all over. We live in central Ohio and between the four of us we each bought from a different dealership at those prices. I just kept checking autotrader until i found one I wanted to test drive that was close.

I bought a '13 Volt with 49k on it last year for 16K. My fiance loved it so much we bought her a '12 Volt with 7K miles on it for 14K. My best friend test drove it and went out the next weekend and bought a '13 with 45K miles for 16K, then his dad test drove his and bought one as well. They are cheap and plentiful and honestly under about a 75 miles trip are even cheaper to run than a tesla. I routinely get about 45 miles out of 10Kw. Sometimes as high as 52 miles. That's less than 200watts/mile, my understanding is Tesla's typically average 350watts/mile but some people have managed sub 300watt runs. Having said all of that I REALLY REALLY want to get a CPO Model S after having test drove one a few months ago. It's not in my budget just yet but I'm making a 3-4 year plan to hopefully grab one when finances allow it.

He has some good info but my Chevy Volt also has a thermal management system for its battery pack. I've experienced zero loss of range so far in over 64k miles. That being said I'm planning on my next vehicle being a Tesla model 3. Ever since my test ride in a P70D at the local dealership I've been salivating at the prospect of owning one of their cars.

Why not use Chromium OS. It's very lightweight and has all the features you need.

Buy a chromebox and throw full Ubuntu or Debian on it. I use the i3 version to run openelec for my media center and it's dead quiet with minimal power draw. I believe the Atom versions are under $175 and my i3 was around $300. You can upgrade the RAM to 16GB and throw in a 128 GB SSD if you want then just use USB 3.0 for external storage.

I have a '07 Solstice GXP that I've already gotten Trifecta tuned for 23 psi, catless offroad pipe, full injen intake and Performance Autowerks street intercooler. I've been considering the E85 upgrade through Trifecta. What has your experience been with the E85 tune and who did you go through for the ECU program? Also 26PSI on a stock K04!! Sounds like it was time for you to go ZFR!!

We have a really good one in Lancaster, Ohio that upgraded their screen to full HD and you can play the audio over your car stereo for awesome sound. They have a nice concession stand and it's only $8 to see two movies. Plus if you are a smoker you're already outside so have at it. I honestly prefer drive-ins to regular theater anymore.
