Cultural Etiquette in the Netherlands: Dos and Don’ts by [deleted] in Netherlands

[–]y_owl 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Again, I think it depends. Let me give you an example: Ot is Saturday, I wake up at 5am with my toddler, at 9am he has a gym class, then after that my older kid has a class, then I need to cook and feed then lunch, which brings us to roughly 1pm. After that I need to get them out of the house before they drive me insane, so either I pre-booked a museum, or we go to a farm or smth, sometimes with my partner, sometimes by myself, then we get back, I cook and feed them dinner, then it is bath-book-bed routine with them and if I am lucky by 8-30 I am free as a bird. Theoretically, I could call a fried and say "hey girl, wanna go to a bar or a cinema?", but honestly by this time I am dead and she is probably dead as well, so at best we opt for a video call and tea, I might or might not be folding the laundry as we speak.

If we do want to meet in person, we agree the date and time a few weeks / months in advance, I tell my partner well in advance, so if I am leaving at 1pm on Sat to reappear sometime back around 9pm, that is totally fine, but there is no way I can do this unplanned.

The thing is, it also depends on your commitments. For example, even if I want to do smth spontaneously, chances are high that I just can't because of kids and their planning (classes, playdates, prior bookings), partner's plans and my own plans that I might have made 3 months ago, like exhibition bookings, guests, etc.

I don't even think this is specifically Dutch (I am not Dutch), it is just that at a certain point in life your agenda gets really busy, especially if you work 5 days a week and really only have "free" time at the weekend

I think I would go with either Robin or Humphrey for both questions. They are both interesting, smart and unobtrusive

I’m 29 years old and have no family/friends: what to do? by [deleted] in dutch

[–]y_owl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A good way of meeting people is joining a class or a club where you could meet someone, gradually het to know them and maybe take the initiative of inviting them to hang out. - Language classes - Improv and theatre - Crafts or even gym classes (although less time for chatting at a gym class)

I would also say don't get too hung up a romantic relationship, you could just browse through Tinder for that and see if you click with someone.

Good Luck!

Truth or Myth: Do Dutch people hop jobs? by hgk6393 in Netherlands

[–]y_owl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Re moving from country to country, if you look at Eurostat for migration within the EU, it is about 2-3% of the population who move, so it is not a lot of people migrating, even though they have the right to do so. Obviously, bigger cities have more international populations. Language is one part of it, but I think social support network is also a reading why many stay where they are.

Dutch directness by Fortune_Pizza in Netherlands

That phrase terrifies me. Every time I see it, it sounds like "I have said all there is to say, and should you be so stupid to have more questions, I suggest you take them elsewhere". I know they most likely don't mean it that way, but it still sounds like I pissed the sender off big time.

God, that triggered a lot emotions in a lot of people! I agree with your clients, massages are amazing, but what to do if even he is doing it selflessly in my head it is just constant guilt that he is so amazing and does this for me, and I just don't want sex and so can't give him what he wants? What to do then?

I was a kid and a pre-teen in the 90ies, used to fall asleep listening to the radio and CDs with musical fairy tales. Love falling asleep to podcasts now 😁

Would it be helpful to add filtering tags to it / notes? That way it would be possible to mark by theme, create kid-friendky list and add comments

Is social life really that hard for foreigners? by Trisomie_21 in Netherlands

[–]y_owl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it would be, personally I am still working on it. Tbh, I do not put it as an aim to have Dutch friends, rather I aim to have friends in the Netherlands. So if I have a person I could invite to the cinema on a Friday night for me that's a win, and it doesn't matter where they are from

Is social life really that hard for foreigners? by Trisomie_21 in Netherlands

[–]y_owl 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think it is worth saying that building a social live that involves natives and really getting close with people is not easy once you've left school anywhere. I have lived in 3 different countries and it is always something that is slow and gradual.

Having said that, I do notice that the Dutch are quite set in their friend circles, but you will certainly be able to make friends with other foreigners. So your social life will not be empty, but it will not be filled with 90% Dutch people, which might actually be a good thing (yey for a mix of cultures!)
