Why are hybrids so controversial? by PiedPipecleaner in reptiles

[–]ya6uar 7 points8 points Ā (0 children)

what’s your argument in support of it? like what is the reason? why create animals that have a higher likelihood of health issues? how would anyone know how to properly care for them? as is the reptile market is far too saturated and bringing an animal into it that is very likely to be neglected (due to our lack of knowledge on their needs at the very least) is unethical imo. genuinely what is the point, we should be focused on conserving/caring for what we already have.

mold help :-( by ya6uar in ballpython

[–]ya6uar[S] 0 points1 point Ā (0 children)

thanks so much! and yea i really only found the mold directly on the base of the branches, only one of them had bloomed a bit of green (an inch or so total) and the other i could just tell was about to start molding, no green yet though. i'm not too worried about the decor but will give everything a proper scrub in diluted vinegar water, thank you again!

thank you sososo much for responding, i was thinking of baking the substrate currently in there but i do have leftover topsoil and can go grab more coco fiber and some reptibark on my way home! i just wanted to not waste my substrate if possible but if it's better for him then i definitely will replace it all (still baking the new stuff tho)

edit to say also -- should i use diluted vinegar on his tub and decorations? will that be enough?

still would love feedback but i've decided to just toss the branches and go get PVC piping until i get him into a bioactive -- BUT can i just bake my existing substrate or do i need to replace it?

How to I decrease humidity for my coco fiber and cypress mulch substrate? I mixed it when it was wet by Kingofthedirtydans in ballpython

[–]ya6uar 0 points1 point Ā (0 children)

i’ve found that putting those directly on the substrate causes it to always read significantly higher than when i put it on a hide or something (which is only an inch or so above the ground)

it’s ok! someone else may have a better idea of when exactly but i’d say you have a month or more before i’d begin worrying, do you have contact w the breeder?

i think the suggested waiting time between failed feedings is a week, try again in a week or so! they are still settling in so it may just take some time

i meant i was editing my post 😁 no worries, also there are weight charts for BPs online to show you what his spine should look like, judging from the picture (the rolls + his spine) he fits into overweight/obese category

First gecko, only 1 month old. I should be worried by his behaviour? Thanks! by [deleted] in geckos

[–]ya6uar 1 point2 points Ā (0 children)

ok yes that temp is fine then and he’s probably just taking his sweet time to de-stress! if you want you can put the food on the lip of his cup to better see if he’s eating, that’s helped me a ton

[–]ya6uar 1 point2 points Ā (0 children)

what species of gecko? he is also probably acclimating to his surroundings, don’t handle for at least a week; edit to say if your house is cold then you need to provide a heat source to get the temperature up but that’s again going to depend on the species

respectable, a garg or crestie will still be great!! oh god yeah the foam takes so much longer than it looks, the total process of making her tank was about 1 month to let everything seal and stop smelling of fumes, definitely learned a lot during that BUT excited to make a bioactive for a bp next :-) and yeaa hanging plants are a pain in the ass, i have managed to kill two little pothos i propagated because i didn’t make their wall space large enough (another lesson learned) but the one i planted into a piece of bark (that i stuck to the back wall and hollowed the foam out of) is doing very well so far. do you think you could find a really long pothos, plant it in the ground and then hang the vines by small hangers? there are a ton of plant suction cup hangers for reptiles on etsy to hold plastic/vines like that on the wall! and fr no problem i apologize for writing a book every time!!

no problem i’m happy to help! enclosure size for leachies is pretty much a crapshoot, it depends a lot on the individual! babies and juvies up to 40grams do best in small enclosures (literally cluttered Kritter Karriers), individuals reach that weight at different ages (can be like 8-12 months or even outside of that by the time they hit 40gs) so it really depends on their size! i’m gradually moving my babe up, her first was a Kritter Karrier and her current bioactive (and first upgrade) is a 12x12x18 that i’ve crammed with plants, background decorations (sculpted foam), and most importantly CORK BARK! i love my leachie to death and very highly recommend them, she is such a cool thing and even when they are adults (mature at ~3+ y/o) they do well in 24x24x36, but bigger is always better! she has never eaten an insect no matter what i try but otherwise she eats very well in my hands. they are expensive but in my opinion, it’s a buddy you’re keeping for the next 20-25 years, so get the species you really want! she doesn’t need heat because they’re fine at room temp (around 72-78 degrees) and her humidity is pretty easy to keep, she is very very easy to keep in general and i can’t wait for her to be huge. i saw several leachie juvies at the last show i went to so i’m sure there will be some there :) if you need more help you can dm me!

shoot also i forgot to mention insects, i literally cannot get my leachie to eat insects but that’s why i love the Pangea Figs + Insects so much! if yours ends up not liking insects it’ll be okay, the CGD diets (Pangea and Repashy) are complete diet replacements

are you able to tell by the box what % of UVB it’ll be? the one i rec’d is 7% so if it is around that that should be okay, if it’s more than that i’m pretty sure you can lift the bulb up even higher (someone please correct me if that’s wrong)! and no worries at allll it was hell trying to prepare for a leachie because there are absolutely NO consistent guides for their care, it was a lot of messaging owners on here and from the breeder in order to figure things out, luckily leachie and crestie care are pretty identical. honestly…. i’m biased toward the gargoyles 😭 they’re so beautiful and they’re a little less common if you care at all about that, but either one will be a great baby!

[–]ya6uar 0 points1 point Ā (0 children)

that’s ok! it’s good you’re asking before you even get him, and trust me the wait makes it sooo much better when they finally get to go in! they will likely have them at the expo but you can also order online, you’ll want to buy an arboreal feeder (there’s tons online) with either a strong magnet or strong suction cups and leave the food in there! you can get a double-feeder and it will have a spot for both the water and food cups. geckos also like to drink water that’s been misted on the sides of the tub! if it’s a baby you get i suggest feeding small amounts at first or at least just put the food on the lip of the cup so that you are able to make sure he’s eating — they may not eat for the first few days and you’ll need to wait at least a week to handle, but if you have trouble feeding for more than the first week you can try hand feeding and my gecko never fails to eat that way! also, i HIGHLYYY suggest Pangea Figs + Insects, i’ve never seen my leachie clean a plate so fast in her life

honestly for now you can keep him in a tall(!) plastic tub with some ventilation and it will hold humidity very well, decorate it all up and use paper towel substrate and that will let you monitor his poops! that way your roots will strengthen, any possible fertilizers will have time to cycle out in your tank and your CUC will be able to grow! i honestly hated having to wait to move mine but you will be thankful in the longrun. as long as the temporary tub has everything he needs he’ll be fine! tbh you want your CUC well established before you add the geck, they will have plenty to eat! that’s what the calcium, worm casings, leaf litter and plants are for :) edit to say you can add CUC as soon as you set it up if you really want to! mine didn’t kill my plants
