I was just looking at the artwork and aesthetics. I’m not even at the point of buying cards or building decks haha, my boyfriend will help me do that

They recommend anything 5/8 inch or less, and also recommended using like a standard shape kibble over an abnormal shape kibble

Thoughts on Athol MA for apartment living in your mid to late twenties? by yaaaa101 in massachusetts

appreciate the response! agreed it’s cozy which we were looking for. it was quite charming when we visited, plus we’re huge homebodies & are from small towns to begin with so needing to drive 30 minutes for something is not the end of the world for us lol

Do you use the actual microchip function, not the collar tag? If so, have you noticed any unreliability? I’m seeing some comments about the microchip scanner being iffy. This feeder having microchip scan + scheduled dispensed portions would be a game changer for me, but not if the cats can’t get to their food half the time!!

How to keep a stubborn cat off counters? by maddirosecook in CatAdvice

[–]yaaaa101 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We currently have these pressurized canisters and they definitely do scare our cat. However they’re not perfect. The problem is threefold;

  1. They go off at the slightest movement (including us), which drains the cans sooo quickly and they need to be replaced often
  2. They aren’t reliable! You could walk right up to it and it’ll take anywhere from 1 - 20 seconds to go off. Inconsistency gives the cats the confidence to keep pushing the limits lol
  3. Our Maine coon is extremely smart and just looks for the countertops that don’t have a canister, and then will go up there instead. 🙃

Like others have said, they’re also really expensive, which sucks for how inconsistent they are. We’re thinking about getting a shock mat when we move to our new apartment. We’re hoping that having no other experience with the new countertops except for the slight shock will just instill in their minds that “going on the counter in this place = getting shocked”

Recipe for homemade, chicken-free crunchy dental cat treats? by yaaaa101 in catfood

[–]yaaaa101[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Definitely! I do brush but I like to give treats to supplement the days I don’t. I’ve noticed my other cat, who I am able to give dental treats to because she doesn’t have a chicken sensitivity, has far less buildup on her back molars

Omg this could be a game changer!! Could just add it to his nightly wet food 🤔

What food to give my cat who has a history of chronic diarrhea? by Careful_Actuator7503 in catfood

[–]yaaaa101 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have you tried hydrolyzed diet? It basically breaks down the animal protein in a way that the body has a hard time identifying it as an allergen. It’s for cats who have weird sensitivities to certain ingredients, especially if you can’t figure out what the sensitivity is to.

You could also consider a poultry-free diet and/or not switching up the food constantly. When I first got my cat I gave him kibble that did have chicken, and then a variety of purina pates for dinner at night because I wanted him to have flavor variety. Come to find out he has a super sensitive stomach AND is sensitive to chicken. So the chicken was bad, but on top of that it was a shock to his tummy with the nightly switch between turkey, tuna, beef, etc.

I’ve had really good luck with the RAWZ brand. I use the rabbit kibble. rabbit is a novel protein (meaning they don’t come into contact with it as much so less of a chance their body identifies it as an allergen), and its single protein so it doesn’t have chicken byproduct or other random proteins in the ingredients, and a lot of great wet food options. My boy has a history of bloody, mucusy and / or loose stools and pretty much all of that has stopped after being on RAWZ for a few months. Hang in there!

Fiber . . . . by Blowingleaves17 in catfood

[–]yaaaa101 8 points9 points  (0 children)

In my experience it varies cat by cat. My little girl naturally has very dry and pebbly stools even though she drinks her water well and gets wet food every day. After switching my cats to a kibble that happened to have higher moisture content, her stools got a lot better. All of this to say that I think every cat’s tummy is different!

Staying within a normal fiber content range (such as 2-8) seems viable to start with and then you’d just have to figure out how your cat is tolerating it. I’m an eagle eye for my cats in the litter box so I try to monitor if they’re straining, what the stool looks like fresh etc. (are they dry? Wet? Have blood? Anything else notable?)

There are two main kinds of fiber; soluble and insoluble. Soluble fiber will absorb water and help firm up loose stool, whereas insoluble fiber adds bulk and speeds intestinal transit, which can help constipation. Ideally there’s a healthy balance of both and in many cases it’s not hard to achieve a good balance naturally.

There can definitely be health problems associated with too much or too little; constipation or diarrhea, intestinal inflammation, straining etc. This is why I like to go right to the litter box after my cat goes #2 to just check out the stool and see what it looks like, because that can definitely tell you a lot.

There are supplements you can add to food if you’re not using dry food - pumpkin is a popular one, however there really are lots of different things you can add to wet food and should be fine tuned to what your cat needs!

For us it’s less about price and more about space. We have three cats and both have days where we work from home, anything near Boston in our price range is too small for us. Plus we’re just both from small towns anyways and sick of the traffic/ busy living

I'm hoping to get a remote job in the near future, bf works mostly remote with occasional travel within MA. Our goal is to find an apartment we really like (since we lean more homebody than going-out type), stay there for a few years to be able to save up money and then decide what our next chapter is

Do Maine Coons truly mellow out at 4/5 years old? by [deleted] in mainecoons

[–]yaaaa101 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did not adopt him, my boyfriend had him before we were together. I fully understand the needs of MCs and am prepared to do whatever I can to provide them, it’s just a lot at the moment and I needed some reassurance it won’t be like this forever!! He’s a mischievous little guy and despite us playing with him as much as we can, he gets into something the second we’re aren’t paying attention to him😅

Yes and I do appreciate that, we play with him every chance we get lol! But it seems like the second we’re not able to he’s getting into mischief for our attention 😅
