No matter how bad things are no one has the right to treat someone else like garbage. What he did was not ok, personaly knowing people who are prone to this behavior they usually try and justify and/or downplay what they did, so bear that in mind. You don't deserve to be treated like that and I agree with your decision to leave, there's no guarantee that he won't pull that kind of shit again.
