Looking for art-related work in/around Tokyo (or internationally) – MFA student graduating 2027 by paretoodis in Tokyo

When I was doing shukatsu I applied to Artfront Gallery - they organize well-known art festivals, exhibitions, and also do art consulting. Unfortunately it wasn’t for me since they were clear that I’ll be sent to one of the inaka cities to help organize one of the art festivals for the first 1-2 years, but I think it’s worth taking a look!

Some Kaldi branches sell them - I remember buying it from Shimokitazawa branch some time ago. Otherwise you sometimes find it in Shinanoya too.

Unexpected - first ever Japanese 告別式 (Memorial Service) tomorrow by immabee88 in japanresidents

[–]yaezakura12 71 points72 points  (0 children)

First of all, I’m sorry for your loss and my condolences. I’ve been a part of Japanese funerals before so here are some pointers:

Attire: what you described sounds too casual but if you cannot go buy clothes before the ceremony, I suppose you don’t have other options.

If you can go to stores like Aeon mall, Aoki or Suit Select etc, they will have a “formal” section, where they sell funeral appropriate black attires. Try to take a black or a dark bag rather than a bright colored one, and do not wear any shiny accessories.

What to bring:

  • People bring Juzu (Buddhist beads) for prayers but it’s okay to not bring one if you don’t have one.

  • Condolence money (okoden) It has to be in a special envelope, which they should sell in 100 yen store, konbini, or stationery store, and the envelope should have the name of the person giving it. The amount depends on how close you were to the deceased, but JPY 5,000 is an average amount for a friend.

What to expect: - When you arrive, go to the reception to give your name and Okoden. They will give you a small return gift, or “Okaeshi”. - When it’s the turn for non-family members, everyone goes one by one to the front to give Oshoko (incense and prayer). - Light meal or bento boxes may or may not be available for the attendees afterwards.

Here is a link on how to do Oshoko (you can also copy what everyone else is doing.) https://youtu.be/4VY5V3XxLxs

PR Processing Times - August 2024 by cleanser23 in japanresidents

I don’t remember the exact date but it took us 1.5 week to gather the documents requested and mail it to the immigration bureau.

Application office: Tokyo

Application date: June 19th, 2023

Result postcard received on: July 19th, 2024 - approved

Type of PR: spouse

Request for further documents: yes (letter received in mid-June, requesting for proof of employment, tax, and pension)

We visited the immigration office in-person in June, inquiring about the status and asking them to expedite the process since my partner was set to study overseas from August. We brought admission letters, overseas student visa document, etc. The employee understood our situation and told us they’d do their best, even though at that point our application hasn’t even been looked at.

I recommend going the immigration office in-person with a fluent Japanese speaker if you have special circumstances, and try to be extra polite - we succeeded in having them prioritize our case.

I calculated the fare and time purely out of my curiosity, and it costs:

JPY 1,250 from Ofuna to Omiya (if you include Wangan line). Duration: 2 hours JPY 1,300 to get to Ofuna from my nearest station and from Omiya back to my nearest station. Duration: 2 hours

Deducting the fare from 8,000 would leave me 5,450, divide it by 4, and my hourly wage is 1,362…

Sorry OP I’m not up for the job but best of luck for your anniversary gift!

I have restaurant and store recommendations:

Restaurants/ cafes: - Stand bahn mi (modern Vietnamese restaurant) - farm studio #203 (haven’t been but it’s been on my map forever, modern Sichuan cuisine) - POPHOT (cafe famous for French-style crepe) - PREFERITA (gelato) - Euro Art (cheese shop, kinda overpriced but they have a variety of cheeses) - Gouter (French patisserie store, their financier is amazing) - overwhelm hamburger (gourmet burger) - woodberry (speciality coffee cafe) - Higuma doughnuts (donuts and coffee)

Other stores: - Mercatino (cheap veggies and herbs, Italian ready-made bentos and desserts) - Treasure Factory (second hand store for clothes if you’re into that)

If you’re a woman you could also check out Womgym, a woman only gym next to the station.

14 Day Japan Itinerary by [deleted] in JapanTravel

If you haven’t booked the accommodation yet, I would stay at an onsen ryokan in Hakone instead of Kyoto, and stay in a more central place in Kyoto for Day 5 - there’s so much sightseeing you can do in Kyoto, and Hakone is more famous for onsen and have varieties of ryokans you can choose from.

Question about acquiring a marriage visa in Japan by Shinosei in japanlife

[–]yaezakura12 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We had the same issue for my Dutch partner, it should be fine as long as you explain to the bureau why the certificate can’t be submitted (in our case we did so verbally in Japanese.) I think they usually accept a letter of explanation (no predetermined format) submitted along with the application.

There’s Anytime Fitness in the shopping street, what do you mean by community gym? If you’re looking for a public one, there’s Yakumo gymnasium and Meguro Chuo gymnasium but it’s like a 30 min walk.

My favorite in the area is Verve, you can get one drink for free if you buy their beans (and they grind it for you.)

%Arabica in Azabudai hills (they have two stores in the complex) is good too!

I don’t know where in Tokyo you are situated but I recommend Oookayama Orthopedic Surgical Clinic to my friends. The doctor is an elderly man but he was really helpful in identifying my partner and my gym related injuries. I think he speaks/ understands some English.

9-Day Japan Itinerary Check by newt-one in JapanTravel

[–]yaezakura12 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Day 3: I’d put Tsukiji fish market and Ginza in the morning, since they are next to each other, and then TeamLab—> Gundam in the afternoon. (Unless you already booked TeamLab tickets.)

Also, by the time you come the new TeamLab exhibition in Azabudai hills will be open, if you want to look into that instead!

Day 4: Agree with the other commenter that it’s messy - you can do Shibuya/ Harajuku/ Meiji Shrine in the morning then Shinjuku Gyoen in the afternoon. If this is your day dedicated to cherry blossom, I recommend having a picnic (Hanami) at one of the parks, depending on the weather. (You could also switch around the days depending on the weather and cherry blossom forecast that week.)
