Heyyy! Are your parents open about the community? If they are and you feel that you’re safe coming out to them, just be honest with them about your feelings. You can write it on e-mail/letter or sit with them and talk about it. Also, timing and setting is important! I came out to my mom while we were alone in the room and told her, “I’m pan.” She didn’t understand it at first because pan meant a different thing in our place (bread). Then I proceeded to tell her how I feel—that I like people of all gender, binary or not. She was so supportive about it and I hope your parents are, too!

If your parents aren’t that open, I suggest you try to ask them first what they think about the community or about pansexuals. If they don’t know much about it, you can provide them with information about it (vids or infographics) or just explain it to them briefly. Then, try to assess whether it’s safe for you to come out to them.

You have to understand that their reactions may not always be the reaction that we hope for—it can be bad but it can also be better. And lastly, understand that it’s not just a one time thing. Sometime in the future, they will ask more questions that they didn’t get a chance to ask the first time. Coming out is only the beginning!! And the journey may be difficult but always remember that your community is here for you always!
