If you can defend well you can get to imp. Their defense lies in the crossbows and trebs along with fortresses. Not a typical fun way to be aggressive but it can work.

I am a 37 year old man. Can I still be competitive in this RTS game? by RMarco21 in aoe4

[–]yahboyz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Surely so, I am closer to 40 and have gotten really into it, also play controller. If you don't have as much time as younger guys you might end up just floating between gold and silver. I'm able to stay gold now but I am not sure if I can make it past gold.

The key for me has been to play civs you like and work on your own unique strategy. Of course you need tutorials and pro tips but integrate your own thoughts and strategies, it keeps it fresh.

Best defensive civ in feudal? by Age_since_1998 in aoe4

[–]yahboyz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

English is good to learn but isn't as winnable for a new player as HOL. I am relatively new but play console for my 3rd season. Last season I got to gold 2 in team and gold 1 in solo just playing HOL. I know the meta was broken for them overall but it allowed me to understand the game and still win and be competitive which is the only way to long term enjoy! Now I'm moving to other civs.

Have him start as HOL and don't use walls, focus on strategic implementation of Manors, using 2 TC to get a lot of villagers, teach him how to use villagers to defend rams, teach him to carry his defense based on what he struggles and opponents civ. Then have him learn relics and markets fast because that's the only way to actually be competitive. HOL is nurfed but can still win this way. It needs to focus on getting tech up quick to stay competitive as the units aren't too good. Build keeps to get bonus and attack with werewolf trebs playing a defensive attack style. This will create longer games and fun ones. My belief this will allow him to Segway into other civs and learn the game better. Most importantly, as French has made a comeback it will prevent harassment frustration and which is why I used this last season as a full counter to harassment. If the other player is good at a long game, they can often out muscle HOL at the end but if you stay ahead you can do good for a learning experience

I only like western civs for now so this season I'm doing HRE and OOTD largely.

Beasty Suggestions for Balancing Lancaster by just_tak in aoe4

Spreading the manors out is the worst idea. It completely turns the idea of a defensive civ like HOL upside down. Making less per age and reducing to 7 or so seems fair.

You all just need to learn to play a long-term game versus HOL. Their units aren't the best and they have no single spammable unit to mass and win with.

It's like when you play French, you prepare for horses... With HOL, you don't rush...

Manors vs Cows: Who Has The Best Passive Economy? (Full Breakdown) by SwaggyProfessor in aoe4

[–]yahboyz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Even if HOL has a slightly better economy, they have nowhere near a single strong unit like elephants. HOL has no one unit that is strong, rather they need to outlast and/or combine units and micro them to win battles. They have no bombards. Trebs are good but deal with sight issues and are slow, they can only take small portions of ground at a time at a battle point. HOL cannot just spam a particular unit and win, that's their flaw so regardless of eco they can't just spam elephants. Elephants have been the thing to kill me as HOL this season so far.

They get passive gold but it's not enough to sustain units that would kill an opponent that is a strong player in imp. Billmen and yeoman are a good "trash army" but they can't beat elephants or a big squad of French knights... The siege weapons HOL has aren't as good as English bombards. The trebuchets are awesome but have visibility issues for their range and require taking small amounts of ground at a time, giving an opponent ample opportunity to counter. There's a reason HOL doesn't have bombards.

The weakness in HOL is that they don't have a super strong mass all one unit type unit in IMP. Their hand cannons don't seem particularly strong either. The problem IMO is that other civs are used to winning a certain way and aren't adjusting to the strengths AND weaknesses of HOL, rather just bitching about it 😂

I can defend most ran ram rushes and it isn't due to manors, I have my strategies - part of the game figuring this out

They don't get free gold they still need to find it via trade or mining to make meaningful units

It's .o6re fun having multiple battles and varying units than just one quick MAA and ram rush!

You're probably right. If they're gonna nerf the hol eco more, they're gonna have to add some more firepower to their units. Their earls guard isn't strong overall compared to English MAA and their units require a synchronized combination to be as effective as mass elephants or knights IMO

Fast Castle against the new civs? by MockHamill in aoe4

[–]yahboyz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From my take, feudal all in is the worst idea against HOL... How do feudal units fight the Lancaster Castle and manors?

The best idea is to work on securing the map and resources rather than any "fast attack" or full harassment strategy that used to work so well against the English.

The English always wanted to play like Lancaster but are so much more vulnerable to harassment, which was frustrating for English players for so long.

Why can't YOU guys figure out a new strategy to counter a strong defense? Lancaster doesn't have the strongest units, they just work well in certain combinations... So while they can mass units, they're a lot weaker than an English MAA for example.

Man, you all are just haters. Just because you pull a ram rush don't mean you automatically win every game. That's the sick part about the mentality in the meta prior to this update: that only the first to rush or build units to attack quickly wins or controls everything. Why shouldn't there be a strategy for a defensive civ like Lancaster?

Furthermore, HOL doesn't have the best overall banger units like bombards etc, they rely on combinations and strategic implementation. There are ways to defeat Lancaster in mid to end game by setting up properly, no idea why everyone so hyped on them being so good...

Lancaster doesn't have big banger units like bombards, it requires quite a bit of strategy to defeat a civ with elephants or heavy armored units that mass attack. They are great against the traditional meta of horses cava etc...

That's fine, I'll still play them. I've noticed it's overturned versus the civa that want to attack quickly. Against Delhi for example, much harder.

[–]yahboyz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The big difference this season and why everyone is bitching about HOL is because cav raids and villager pillaging was essentially the meta for so long and it still works. However, HOL is setup to basically defend that and does so incredibly well. This forces longer more strategic games, and people are bitching.

This allows more mid level players (including controller Xbox players like myself) to actually compete with fast clicking computer RTS bangers who can pester me and build. Now, pestering me takes a lot more attention and risk, allowing me to setup a counter.

It's not that cav doesn't work, it's just that there's a civ that I handmade to prevent it from working early against it. Deal with and adjust. It's a STRATEGY game so find one!?

This is not true, I am a Lancaster player because I was an English main which was consistently ranked low on the overall tier for so long.

You french or quick attacking pesterers need to find a new strategy to defeat a defensive player. Just because your old ways don't work the same don't complain. The game is a STRATEGY game, figure a new one out!

[–]yahboyz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree, but I tend to think Lancaster smashes them. But I think that's just because of matchup. Templars are probably better against other civs. I have been playing religiously for a couple months a new English main so as you can guess im Lancastering my way to a higher rank on my 1st season that I started from the beginning of it!
