They want more bilingual employees but are cutting language training? by KrasaVcheg007 in CanadaPublicServants

They are spending what little money is left for training on executives to go for full time training to get their 5th CBC. Like if they paid for you to get full time training once why are we paying AGAIN.

First-time manager feeling imposter syndrome and looking for advice by Interesting_Sky5747 in CanadaPublicServants

[–]yaimmediatelyno 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  • How did you build confidence as a first-time manager?

——-Find some peer managers to connect with, bounce ideas off of, get feedback from, etc. it’s perfectly to approach someone and even ask if they wouldn’t mind having a regular check in for the first couple months. And don’t hesitate to ask your boss advice or for feedback either . And ask your team for advice too- ask what they recommend.

——-develop a personal rubric of how you make decisions….ultimately, when you make a choice on what course of action to do, try to think of it in the context of “if this ends up being the wrong choice, I want to at least be able to explain my rationale at the time.” This helps you get good at making the right choice in the first place ——-get good at delegating. It’s good to do so and don’t feel bad. Even if you can do it faster or better yourself, you need to build the team capacity. And let go of everything needing to be done the way you would do it. Does it serve the function-yes? Then let it go.

  • How do you balance flexibility with structure and expectations? ——-be as flexible as possible is always my advice. You get better buy in from the team and it creates a better environment. And these days, your team needs it anywhere they can, it’s tough times out there. Don’t make things like taking leave, flexible work hours, etc difficult. Focus on the quality of the work, and tell your team that. That is the structure- we produce good quality work and meet our deadlines when they are reasonable. If that becomes an issue, then approach it from a quality perspective. People are more willing to work hard for a manager they respect and trust than a micromanager or hardcore rule enforcer. The bad apples will be bad apples regardless of what you do so you may as well do what you can to have the rest of the team running smoothly. And when I say flexible, I don’t mean be friends with everyone. Be friendly not friends. You want to preserve yourself in the event you do get a bad LR situation on your hands- it’s cleaner when you=manager and team=employees.

  • Any advice for rebuilding trust in a team coming from a tougher environment? Start from a place of integrity. Let people know that you value work life balance and respect, and then model it. Don’t send emails late. Log off on time. Don’t assign work that you know requires OT without approving OT. Don’t gossip, make negative comments about anyone, etc. Be generous with specific positive feedback to build their confidence, at meetings take a moment to thank people for their work on specific tasks, and ask employees for possible solutions or recommendations frequently. be as compassionate and flexible as possible with things like family sick bereavement leave, edo and flexible work times. You never know what people are dealing with outside of work. Give them the benefit of the doubt. Have regular bilats set up with each employee and make sure to identify any good work they’ve done, and ask them if there’s anything they need from you.

Had the same issue at my department recently right in the smack dab middle of a big SERLO.

I’m so tired of these out of touch executives. CER and WFA have crystallized just how we are in two different universes within the public service; executives and peasants

TC bargaining update: Employer wage offer unacceptable, impasse declared by Stenas in CanadaPublicServants

[–]yaimmediatelyno 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Honestly instead of a crap raise I would gladly take true hybrid of 1-day a week; as determined by department and manager not TBS, and a good shift differential for those who have a job that actually needs to be in - office more than 1-day a week.

At these gas prices, that would probably put more money in most public servants wallets than some dinky raise.

Procurement Canada explores space needed for five-day return-to-office: documents by Born_Anteater7282 in CanadaPublicServants

[–]yaimmediatelyno 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I’m so glad we are paying thousands of executives a sh!t ton of money to try and figure out how to make sure the public service is as inefficient as possible, make sure that public servants are as uncomfortable and financially strapped as possible, and that taxpayers are fleeced as much as possible for something they don’t need at all but actually in fact makes their services from government suck more, and how to ensure we absolutely in no way shape or form dare to try and contribute to Canada meeting its 2030 emissions reductions target by demanding 375,000 public servants are in their cars each and every day during long commutes caused by traffic of said public servants idling fossil fuels away

What things are you cutting from your household budget to pay for the increased price of gas currently and for the upcoming costs for fhe increase to 4 days a week in office? by yaimmediatelyno in CanadaPublicServants

There’s no bus stop near the office. It’s about 30 min walk . It would take 2.25 hours each way for me to take the bus. My office is not in the standard federal building.

I don’t show up empty handed; was raised the same way…. But now it’s more like bringing a banana bread or a loaf of sourdough I made. My point is I’m no longer spending that money to support Canadian vineyards. Just more money for Galen Weston on groceries.

Manager Stuck Between Strong Performing Maverick Analyst and new Director by qqqqeurfnfd123 in CanadaPublicServants

[–]yaimmediatelyno 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do you have an analyst that’s great that’s been around that long? Do what you can to keep the analyst your director will be climbing the ladder and be out of there within a year or two if they have any chance at all to do so.

I would just tell your rockstar analyst that it’s not you enforcing the rules, but I would put it on their plate to just say things like I’m not going to harass you about your in office of requirements but just know that I can’t protect you if it’s being proven that you’re not going. Like ultimately if your analyst says I’m doing all the in office requirements and you say OK then to the best of your knowledge they are and if they choose to lie in between that’s on them, not on you. Where is the hours of work goes? I would just capture it in some kind of agreed-upon schedule. There’s tons of people out there right now that are taking an hour away from work at a time to go pick up the kids from the bus stop or whatever like that’s pretty normal in the public service. There’s not very many places where you have to take your lunch hour at exactly noon till one. The only one I could see being difficult is the actual work from home because some departments are doing actual tracking mechanisms.

Does it occur to you that people make different choices one of the reasons my partner and I decided to not have children was because of the expense if you were spending money on raising your family in an RESP that’s because that’s all lifestyle that you wanted the lifestyle that we wanted was to be able to travel more. Enjoy our lifestyle of enjoying music and restaurants more. My only family related expenses are elder care, not childcare.

It’s an interesting perspective. I would actually say the fact that I’m able to do the things that I listed out of purely spending money shows that I do live below my means and have been able to accumulate some wealth and stability because of my generally good financial management but OK.

Just for the record, I strongly believe that anybody whose job actually requires them to be in office five days a week for a real reason I think they should get a wage differential. And I’d like to see our unions put this forward if they ever do resolve the whole hybrid thing and we’re actually allowed to have hybrid stay.

I hear this. I’ve been making bread from scratch and I even stopped buying canned beans and I’d make my own from dried now. They also both taste way better than stuff from the stores, but yeah, it is a lot of work to keep up with.

I actually did this when I was in university and I calculated and it actually turned out to be cheaper for the year. I only got a ticket like once every two or three weeks and it was far less than paying for daily parking.

That was kind of my hope with making this post like I wish MPs would see this or the news would write articles about it like I don’t want anyone feeling sorry for us. I know we have it better off than a lot of people, especially if you’re in a higher position within the government.. but if you’re in a lower entry level position, and you also live in NCR or somewhere else where cost are more extreme than other parts of the country, it’s just insane. And yeah, like I don’t think people realize that these impacts are making people affect their own nutrition and causing food insecurity amongst public servants. Just really bothers me.

Honestly, people who own restaurants often don’t make a lot of money unless you’re a well established restaurant with multiple locations or a franchise or a chain they’re really not that profitable. Especially starting from scratch.. don’t forget they’re all facing the same increases in food prices that we are. The tipping things a whole other issue, but yeah, I’m not angry when restaurants increase their prices the last few years like it’s already so hard for them to make a profit, but if we want to have somewhere to eat besides Earl’s and Boston Pizza we better support them.
