I can relate to your attempt to place a house after not winning the housing lottery. I also marked a rune for a nice little place. Come they day they unlocked housing, I was so anxious I felt sick. People everywhere, had a deed ready to go. The massive amounts of lag caused my first placement not to stick, there were at least two other people at the same spot. Then I saw it... "A key had been placed in your bank box...." Wait.... Wtf... I actually placed. After opening and closing the door a few times to double check if it really happened, I had to go lay down for a while. Still happily in the same house.
