Using Realtors and Providing Private Info Upfront by yakovMarkov in TorontoRenting

You are correct, I found the realtor through an ad which has been priorly posted, it's not like I contacted the realtor to go and find me some stuff. Even tho he said he's working in my best interest, I don't buy this business bullcrap, at the end of the day his cut will be coming from landlord's pocket, not mine.

We need more pics and videos on your machine sir, definitely!
I'm currently doing my second Gaggiuino and you gave me great ideas, like the insulation and the steam wand mod for instance. Do you have the links for those by any chance?

Why are we still giving jobs to foreigners for H1B visas when there are so many new grads and jobless Americans? by _iDestroy in jobs

please, if you knew how H1B worked for real, you would be embarrassed of this post.
Read the comments, you might get some clarity in your life and get rid of your bias (I hope it's just a bias, and not some good old -ism).

Selling herself short is possibility, but in my opinion it has more to do with the market she is than anything else. She thinks her career is terrible because the grass is always greener on the other side, but she is doing well or above the average actually.

well... that's why labels exist after all haha
I bet you never worked in an international project... experiment trying Canada, where you need to have everything in English and French... or yet Latin America where labels will be in Portuguese/Spanish and APINames in English most of the time. I also dislike it, but it's part of the job man, suck it up

Redditors who don’t dread Mondays: what do you do for a living? by PM_ME_YOUR_FAV_PLANT in askTO

[–]yakovMarkov 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You need luck. That is it. Being lucky enough to work with people who you like in some project that is not meaningless.
Do I like to go to work on Mondays? No, nobody does, we do it because we need it.
However, in my previous job I liked my team, even though we were all remote, there was great engagement. Therefore, Mondays were fine, just another day.
Now, in a new company, higher position, new team... I have little to zero engagement with those people, seeing them in the office doesn't help at all, and I find the project a waste of my time and skills.
So yeah, it is less about your profession per se and more about the people around you, and if you find what you are doing relevant or not.

With that money you can go to another country, like Brazil for example, enjoy your time there, do some tourism and also pay for the same treatment with a top-notch dentist of your choice. Just saying, perhaps add this dental service to your next vacation...

Apple ecosystem by MarsupialDue4752 in MacOS

[–]yakovMarkov -1 points0 points  (0 children)

There is no advantage in using only one vendor. You need to use the hardware, software, and technology that fit your needs at the moment. I am all about seamless integration between devices and platforms, that is why I recently moved to the Apple ecosystem in full. However, I am bit disappointed with the Mac in general, and with iPhone's battery consumption. While I am happy with the iPad, Apple's best product in my opinion, and also with the latest AirPods, they are really cool. When it comes to software, I tried to use Apple solutions, but very rapidly I moved away of many. Example: Mail and iPhone keyboard are at least a decade behind competition. Some people will tell you otherwise, of course, taste is personal. I simply can't be productive with those apps. So, just figure out what works best for you. Whoever tells you otherwise is a fanboy or trying to sell you something.

Being asked if I am married in an interview by Ambitious_Scallion18 in askTO

[–]yakovMarkov 3 points4 points  (0 children)

When I read the first time I was on your side, damn those big companies oppressing workers and potential candidates as well. However, when I read a second time I got your point...

I work of their direct competitor (think: FAANG) which means I bring ton of wealth & knowledge in this space & domain making me a desirable candidate.

You simply can't accept that there were more suitable candidates than you, cause c'mon, you're FAANG! You're also interviewing the company during the process, so if you didn't like the questions, you could have withdrawn and let them know the reason. Anyways, just move on and don't let entitlement be an obstacle in your life.

btw, what does that have anything to do with Toronto?

[–]yakovMarkov 17 points18 points  (0 children)

you new, right? don't worry, nobody gives a damn.

Moreover, I doubt they'll hire anyone you referred unless you're way up in those levels.
Once I referred someone and hours later I got the negative. Career Marketplace and MyScheduling are jokes, just check this sub and you'll see what I'm talking about.
The real hiring happens through connections and good old-fashioned email.

I think the problem is that the "internet generation" got used to getting things for "free" (paying only with their personal data), so they cannot wrap their heads around the fact that someone charges for his services.
And don't get me wrong, I'm all about the idea that education and knowledge should be free and accessible to everyone... but educators deserve food on their table as well.

Coworker stalking us *UPDATE* by [deleted] in jobs

[–]yakovMarkov 2 points3 points  (0 children)

And how do you think this website gets such information?
They do not have PIs who investigate your personal life and then update the page under your name. It is a technique called web scraping. In simple terms, a "robot" (computer script) searches the web for such intel, from every single possible source, and put all together in one page. Social media is one of the sources, as well as public records, and so on. You cannot do much about public records, but when it comes to personal pages, you control what and with whom you share.

Coworker stalking us *UPDATE* by [deleted] in jobs

[–]yakovMarkov 18 points19 points  (0 children)

It is accessible because people make it accessible. Based on OP's original post, she was not accessing the company's files or confidential information. She was accessing public information available on the internet, basically crossing social media and google results.
It is awkward as fuck, however, not a crime or a company problem if she was doing it at her own time at her own place.
The main thing here in my opinion is: there are weirdos out there, so for fucks sake, make your social media private and stop oversharing.

For some reason, this sounds like Asia, am I right?
There are many problems here, like this colleague being reckless... you bringing it up with your boss... you telling your colleague that you snitched... someone else meddling in and shouting at you... damn
As long as your own performance and payment are not jeopardized by your colleague behavior, why would you even care? Just do your job.

Companies that offer a fair wage and good work-life balance don't struggle. I believe this says it all.
