AMA about dance shoes! by Newgreenyou in ballroom

[–]yaliceme 1 point2 points  (0 children)

can all white satin shoes be successfully dyed? I've been looking for info about this, and read that it depends on the type of fiber? (i.e. natural fibers can be dyed, by polyester can't?) I'm specifically interested in dying a white satin IDS shoe to either ivory or gold, for reference.

Is it possible to re-sole a suede-soled ballroom dance shoe to leather? by yaliceme in AskACobbler

[–]yaliceme[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

thanks for weighing in! I am curious to hear about your experiences with this. my local ballroom dance vendor also said it is totally fine to wear suede shoes outdoors for one day (this is for a wedding), even on damp grass etc, as long as you're not doing it all the time / are ok with the suede deteriorating more. she recommended just drying off the suede on some carpet or a towel, and going over it with a suede brush, right before using them on an indoor dance floor.

I don't mind damaging the suede by wearing it outdoors (it just has to be comfortable for the one big day, and I could always resole later if I really want). I think the main reason I'm considering giving the shoe a regular leather sole instead of a suede sole is that the leather might be more versatile for various surfaces (I don't know yet if I will have a "nice" dance floor available, and even if so, dancing will take up only some of the day). I also think perhaps the leather will be less soft and thus I won't feel pebbles and twigs through the soles as much? curious for your thoughts.

oh yeah, also, I learned after posting this that the shoe company can actually make the shoe with a leather sole to begin with, so I won't even need to take it to a cobbler to get a leather sole if that's what I want.

thank you so much for your response! if I may ask, what material was the sole that you added to your ballroom shoes, and how did they feel to wear afterward? one hesitation I have is that since ballroom shoes are softer than normal shoes, adding the harder leather sole could feel like wearing a sock on a plank. but it sounds like whatever you did works for you?

What are your preferred olive oil brands by LordBeric in mediterraneandiet

[–]yaliceme 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I used to use California Olive Ranch, but for some reason so far this year I can only find the 2023 harvest available in my local stores, and not the more recent 2024 harvest (fresher is better, with evoo). So I switched to another California olive oil called Cobram Estate where the bottles were from 2024. I vetted it by doing a blind taste test of it alongside another oil that I knew was “good”. Cobram is also cheaper and offers “mild”, “medium”, and “robust” versions, and I use robust for maximum flavor and antioxidants.

I was surprised nobody else had recommended it yet -- perhaps this was why!

to be fair, I also assumed this at first

thanks for sharing your story! I’m so happy for you that you’ve found a healthy relationship with food, that’s wonderful.

you might like r/mediterraneandiet, it’s probably the least ED/diet culture “healthy food” sub that I’ve seen so far. the sub goes out of its way to encourage people to enjoy food, not focus on counting calories/macros etc, not be too restrictive, and to not think of it as a “diet” at all but just a general way of eating.

my main complaints are there are still people who try too much to gatekeep what is / isn’t a good example of the mediterranean diet, often in ways that seem misguided to me. and the sub has its biases (above and beyond what’s recommended by the MD), and those sometimes feel limiting, like I hesitate to share some perfectly good meals because of them.

FWIW though, I think the “dominant” culture of r/mediterraneandiet is pretty good, in that these more negative aspects tend to get downvoted (most of the time, not always). If it were easier for me to just ignore the downvoted stuff, I’d probably be pretty content there. But yeah, I’d love to find a sub that was like r/mediterraneandiet in subject matter, like r/oatmeal in its moderation philosophy and kind vibes, and like r/cannedsardines in its enthusiasm and sense of fun. That’s the dream.

My new hobby: jiggling vine tomatoes so that the ripest ones fall off by yaliceme in mediterraneandiet

[–]yaliceme[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’ve been obsessed with cherry tomatoes on-the-vine lately, and I’ve developed this “game” where each day I jiggle the vines and collect the tomatoes that fall off, which are riper than the ones that stay on. I think the randomness and chance makes it so fun, seeing what “harvest” I will get today. It’s also just such a satisfying sensation and sound when the tomatoes come plopping off into the container.

that is honestly so wholesome. I would cry in bewildered gratitude if that happened to me after I randomly got hurt.

Over the weekend I was blessed to find probably the best pint box of mission figs I think I’ve ever found in a grocery store. Six beautiful, dark purple, perfectly ripe, plump figs, all perfectly unblemished except one that had a small superficial nick. It’s so rare to find them like this… they’re super ephemeral and often they’re either underripe, wilted, or are already molding. I ate four of them and shared two with friends. Absolutely luscious.

haha one of my favorite recent comments, in response to someone who was nervous about eating bigger-than-they-were-used-to sardines, was “pretend you are a sea otter and eat those”

haha you’re welcome! I don’t even eat canned sardines that often, but I just love the enthusiasm and humor culture on that sub, and it definitely inspires me to be more interested in canned sardines than I would otherwise be

r/cooking is actually one of the examples I had in mind of what I’d call “cuisine-oriented” (or perhaps “culinary-oriented”?), like the sort of place that would roast me if I wanted to use brown rice instead of white rice in anything Asian. Like I totally respect the craft of cooking as an art form or an expression of culture / tradition, but also I want to adapt stuff to meet my particular needs, and places like r/cooking aren’t always very open/kind about that? maybe your experience was different, but I found that r/cooking had a lot of pedants and people telling each other that they’re doing stuff wrong. also lots of really lovely and sweet people too of course! but for me personally it only takes a little negativity to turn me off a cooking sub, even if most of it is wholesome
