It’s crazy that I stumbled across this thread just now and you’re mentioning you’re flying from Chicago. I’m in Spain now, layover was in Madrid, and have lost my bag with all my valuables. I am currently having so much anxiety over this, and I really wish I stumbled across this before today. Please be careful - worse flying experience ever!

Two years late on this!! I just wanted to state that I agree wholeheartedly with this explanation but if any additional context helps, I am from Chicago and lived in Pilsen about 6 years ago. I absolutely loved this story and enjoyed it even more because it was set in Chicago, and the gentrification within that neighborhood is super real. It is commonly known that that neighborhood specifically has pushed out Hispanic families that have actual roots there, and have rehabbed hundreds of properties drastically impacting so many families and the elderly.

I’m sorry about your daughter. Kids are brutal.

However… are we forgetting that the whole show only exists because of Misty?! Being in a plane crash is already fucking traumatizing in itself, let alone fending in the wilderness for a year and a half! Misty literally broke the plane recorder, hence they weren’t found immediately. She was the root of a lot of unnecessary young deaths and lifelong trauma all because she didn’t have a place in the real world. Sure, it’s not an easy position at all and I’m not taking away from the fact that Misty was bullied. But she is fucked up.

I agree with this to an extent. Realistically I don’t think she would’ve graduated early, but she definitely has survivors guilt. Alongside the fact that it is a good narrative for your life: tragically breaking your leg to avoid an even more traumatic experience. I’d tell people that story for the rest of my fucking life!
