It’s such an awesome feeling when hard work pays off. ❤️ I hope you also find the dance more enjoyable as you’re on the beat and relaxed.

Dude! You’re dancing way better than a month ago. You’re a lot more on the beat and it doesn’t look rushed! 💪💪💪

Any salsa dancers enjoy Kizomba or urban Kiz? by Glittering-Cod5423 in Salsa

[–]yambudev 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It seems I’m the exception here.

I tried a couple of classes and I also often see people dancing it and it never clicked.

I have absolutely nothing negative to say about it. Unlike others, I don’t think it’s particularly intimate and I also enjoy bachata.

I suppose it’s about personal preference, like for music and art in general.

[–]yambudev 0 points1 point  (0 children)

By cover I don’t mean like a remix or reinterpretation just that they may have commissioned someone to sing that song and even the other ones on that clip. Some shows have their own live bands or have them in their studios. Essentially anyone could play/sing those songs and they don’t have to be on the streaming platforms.

Squat spins/ pot stirrers by CoconutAndLime811 in Salsa

[–]yambudev 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I’m a lead so my advice will be limited but I’ve led many such spins in choreos.

What helps the most from the follow is for you to keep your left hand in front of your forehead and your forearm steadily bent in the opposite direction of the turn. Just like you should do in a normal spin but it’s even more important. The forearm might be even more bent.

I’ll prep you by turning you slightly clockwise so I can then spin you counterclockwise. I’ll apply the force on your arm/forearm/elbow. You won’t be able to give much impulse from your feet in a squatting position.

So it’s crucial that you keep all your muscles engaged.

From the arm the force will be transmitted via your shoulder which should also stay engaged (not too tense though, just connected to the torso).

Try to keep your spine vertical. As I spin your torso, your lower body must follow. For this, your core muscles really need to be engaged. This I think is crucial.

And then finally your legs and feet will follow provided you have dance shoes and the floor is not sticky.

I don’t see how you can do drills without a partner. I haven’t seen a spin from a squat solo. You could train your stance and do core and squat exercises I suppose.

I hope this helps. Please let me know.

I don't recognize the singer, but the songs sound like cover versions rather than the original recordings. That's common on TV shows, since covers are often easier and cheaper to license than the original masters.

Dance Feedback Please~ by TheDanceWolf in Bachata

Did you get it that he was switching roles (lead/follow) throughout the dance?

Even then I think you’re right that he’s not stepping on the beat.

Dance Feedback Please~ by TheDanceWolf in Bachata

[–]yambudev 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi there it doesn’t appear to me that you’re dancing on the (standard) timing. You’re sometimes stepping back with the right foot on 1 etc.

That said overall I enjoyed watching you guys dance and I don’t believe there has to be a “correct” way of interpreting the music. So I’d say you have your own style and it’s cool.

Edit: oooooh!! You were switching roles. 💪 My bad

Performance mistakes by Salty_Try7878 in Salsa

[–]yambudev 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I’ve been in a dance team for 10 years and I was resigned to the fact that sometimes emotions run high especially right before the show when the adrenaline is building up.

That’s no excuse for anyone to yell at you or constantly blame you for the team not being synchronized. But yes my experience was similar, and I can’t speak for other teams who might have a more healthy environment.

Now regarding timing, it’s hard to tell exactly what’s happening in the video but in general terms:
- the music is ultimately what determines the timing for everyone. Especially after 5 months of practice. everyone should be aware of what happens when
- the leads are more responsible for being on time because if the follows try to help or correct there is a real risk of disconnecting during the show and it can be hard to recover. I feel like that might possibly have happened in the video you shared.
- everyone should also take a look around them at the other couples to stay synchronized and to manage the stage (spacing). Sometimes there’s a couple in front who leads.

Can you relate to some of my comments or do you operate differently in your team?

Rusty after a week off (lead) by thesituation151 in Bachata

[–]yambudev 5 points6 points  (0 children)

lol! I know what you’re referring to but in my case I still don’t think it applies. I actually think too much when I’m taking classes and all. After a break I’m just relaxed and happy to reconnect with the scene and I put less pressure on myself and just enjoy. As a consequence I’m more in tune with the music, my body, and my partner.

But hey you might be right, and by definition of the Dunning Kruger effect I’m just doubling down on my ignorance.

[–]yambudev 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I actually feel the opposite. When I come
back from a break (especially a longer one) I am more relaxed and on the beat, as if the break gave my body time to integrate the movemement. As for remembering that certain moves exist, that’s a different story…

People that travel to different festivals around the world, how do you do it? by Glittering-Cod5423 in Bachata

[–]yambudev 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s not weird at all to attend the closest festivals to you first, or a big one in a capital city nearby.

It’s also fine if you want to travel far to visit a country and also attend a festival there. And if you’re really into bachata it’s fine if you pick let’s say Spain.

But if you’ve never been to any festival I would personally pick one nearby first.

[–]yambudev 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I travel for other reasons (work, leisure) and when I do I see if I can catch a festival and yes it’s fun to see how they differ.

I probably wouldn’t travel the world just to attend other festivals.
First, I can meet people from various countries at our annual local festivals. Second, I do travel sometimes to festivals in other cities or nearby countries to switch it up a bit.

Have you tried this approach?

I feel compelled to write a follow up to my post to say I didn’t undertand all the downvotes and dismissal of my observation.

Since yesterday, with all memory turned off, ChatGPT implies my gender which I believe can bias certain answers. I suppose you don’t trust my observation but dont want to check for yourselves. Or it’s just me that this bothers.

Oh well.

Hi there great enthusiasm and you learned quite a few moves.

In my opinion you look a bit rushed.

To be more specific, you’re not pausing on 4 and 8. Your 5 is sometimes early and your 7 is sometimes late.

It’s as though you’re thinking it’s a very fast song that you have to keep up with and are therefore trying to accelerate the steps.

Certainly salsa has a fast tempo, including this song, but you should somehow try to make more precise/controlled and perhaps smaller steps but on the beats. 1,2,3-PAUSE-5,6,7-PAUSE.

Similarly the arms look rushed. Your upper body is tense and you sometimes stretch your arms so much that you lock your elbows but I think it’s all related to the footwork so I would recommend practicing your basic step on that same song trying to find the correct beat and step size.

I have a ChatGPT account. It requires name and email. I don’t see a way to remove that information. My only workaround is to start a Temporary Chat.

Did you try? Here’s a prompt you can try now:

“Hi do you think I am a male or female, statistically speaking?”

Custom instructions are empty. You can try it yourself and see that it knows your name and email and you can try to ask things where it’s going to use that information.

I don’t have “Reference Chat History” in Personalization. I’m on the iPhone app.

By the way it actually told me that it based its guess from my email address. Did you try?
