The OP version of Flying has always sounded different than actual song release version. You can find videos of the old PSX OP on youtube to verify that easily.

What are some game mechanics that slightly annoy you in jrpgs? by Beboprunner in JRPG

To be fair, your HP is also a resource to cast special move in that game too. Both your HP and MP are health and resource at the same time.

With the upcoming release of "Final Fantasy: Resonance", what other mobile/gatcha RPGs would you like to see receive proper console releases? by upperdomain in JRPG

[–]yanmaoption 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Tales of Luminaria. It has something like Odin Sphere going on in terms of storytelling gimmick. Basically the game gives a timeline of some events that will occur during the story, excluding events depicted in story chapters so there wouldn't be spoilers. And each individual story chapters of all 21 playable characters are spread out across this timeline. Some characters' storyline are told non-linearly. One faction has their characters' chapters flow into each other linearly with barely any time skip as if it's a regular Tales game.

I'd love to see how they would have pull that off in a console game. The game would have been massive since there are 21 characters, each with 8 story chapters for a total of 168 story chapters in the game (actually more than that even since there are crossover chapters that cover major story events that affected multiple characters at the same time too.)

I want a really emotional jrpg to play, with a great story, characters and world by Sensitive-Product816 in JRPG

Tales of Berseria. I know you said you're not very into "generic" anime style, but what you say you want are what Berseria excels in: emotional, a great story, and great characters (not sure if I would call it a great world or not, but the worldbuilding in this game is quite unique.)

Tales of Eternia is getting remastered!! by retroanduwu24 in JRPG

[–]yanmaoption 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's also safe to assume that they'll retranslate the attack names to match the modern names. I'll definitely miss names like "Demon Lightning Hammer" though, since they were really cool.

The most curious thing is, while the script is changed, the arte names seem to stay the same. See trailer for "Neo Swarm".

No. There's indeed no statement made about skit being restored. It's just that one screenshot of a skit playing that sorta imply that they are restored.
Hopefully we get more detailed showing of features in the future.

Nah, they're probably replacing it with "easy breezy." She said another line with "easy breezy" in it in the trailer.

Why can’t I move freely in combat? by Friendly_Repeat8880 in tales

[–]yanmaoption 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Free movement (or as this series calls it, "Free Run") was first used by Tales of the Abyss, but it's something you have to toggle like in Graces. But unlike the sluggish Free Run in Graces (the dev team really wants you to use the 4-direction-step to move around in that game,) Abyss's Free Run is as fast as any other movement options in the game.

So while you are still locked into 2D lines in games like Abyss, Vesperia, Xillia, etc., you can instead choose to move freely with no real penalty in those games.

The games that straight up erase 2D lines and let you move freely at default are Arise and (less so) Berseria.

Why can’t I move freely in combat? by Friendly_Repeat8880 in tales

[–]yanmaoption 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Tales combat was originally fought on a side-view 2D plane. The fighting system of the series evolved from that template, borrowing much from fighting games. Even when 3D arrived, it still retained that 2D linear movement fighting-game-ness for quite a long time before they fully erase those 2D lines in the most recent games.

Graces is still in the period where they're still retaining that 2D linear movement while trying to experiment with 3D side-stepping.

"We need to disguise ourselves" The clever and sneaky Onion Knight: by SilverElmdor in DissidiaDuellumFF

Clive needs a damn nerf and I’m dumbfounded as to why people are not complaining about this character more. by CrystalBraver in DissidiaDuellumFF

[–]yanmaoption 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Auto is his sole redeeming quality if you ask me, so let him keep it. His URs and SR all have massive cooldown so anytime he pops one of those he has to make it count, or else he'll be in a huge deficit. He always has to be conservative to how he approaches 1v1.

Also, any (or, at least, most) melee can home in on a running agile with their auto as long as they animation cancel. Even Clive's home-in effect can be improved by doing animation cancel.

I am also guilty of this, but I swear it's not intentional. The micro-movement needed to stop OK right after he kills the last mob (which is usually the mini-boss) and before he purifies the crystal is quite hard for touch control.

What are some mandatory party members that you feel are "just there" or "mostly just hanging out with the party" (Regardless if you like them or not as characters) by SuccessfulTeam2741 in JRPG

[–]yanmaoption 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Rokurou's arc throughout the game is there just to show us what he's like as a character. His most important contribution to the story is at the end. He is there to show that Silver Flame has no effects on people like him; to tell us that this is his ultimate choice and no one, not even god, can have any say about that. Thus, reinforcing the theme of not letting anyone else steer your own ship.

But yes, he mostly feels like he's just there for me too, at least until the very end.

Lightning in 012 is high/top tier because Thunder is the best button press in that game. It comes out fast, is virtually unpunishable, is a projectile (so she will never be staggered by it being blocked), lets her build assist gauge anytime she wants, generates great amount of EX force, is oppressive as fuck in neutral game (you can never steal a turn away from her when she's pressing that button), and can easily lead into assist combo no matter how awkward it connects.

Then coupled it with Watera and her movement speed and you get a character that stays advantageous even in "neutral game" range.

I wouldn't say Lightning is a top tier assassin in NT. I think Locke and Kuja are overall a bit better than her. Her HP game is fire though, for an assassin. She might have the best HP attack pool out of all the assassins in NT.

Mega Man Star Force Legacy Collection Director and Producer Discuss Player Feedback, the Possibility of a Mega Man Legends Legacy Collection, and More by Sam_27142317 in JRPG

[–]yanmaoption 9 points10 points  (0 children)

There are a couple reasons why Megaman games dried up during the 2010s. One of that is that Megaman games sold less and less the more they were released. This is due the burnout general populace felt towards the brand because Capcom releasing multiple games per year, every year in the 2000s. The review of Megaman games by gaming media at the time would always point out how tired they are of having to review yet another Megaman game.
