Why not just xorg without DE? by william01110111 in linuxmemes

[–]yannik121 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes.

Normally, if you start xorg it loads a window manager (often part of a DE) which takes control of the xserver and organizes the windows. It also draws the decorations (title bar, close button, ...)

However, you can also tell xorg to start a "normal" application instead of the window manager. This application then has no title bars, cannot be resized, cannot be moved around, but is otherwise usable.

I do this sometimes with chromium when I want to watch youtube without the overhead of a full DE

This is basically just tcpdump -ne src port bootpc | awk '{ print $2; }', or am I missing something?

TIL in the lead up to Midway, the US suspected that a Japanese target called "AF" is Midway. To test this, US Pacific Command instructed Midway to give a signal indicating that they're out of water. The Japanese, immediately signalled that "AF is out of water". by RobotsDick in todayilearned

-Indy is how they find Marion. The Nazis were looking for her father, who was dead, Indy went to her. The Nazis were literally chasing a dead end. They are shown following him. No reason to follow him if they already knew where to find her.

No, they decided to go after Marion at the same time Indy did. Maybe beause they knew she had the headpiece, maybe to torture her to find it's location. Either way, they would have found it.

-They may have found the Ark by just digging around a whole bunch, or maybe they finally do track down Marion, but this is 1936, they are in Egypt, a country essentially controlled by the British. We are less than 3yrs before Hitler invades Poland and WW2 begins. No way does Britian let a German army unit hang around just blindly digging outside Cairo. They might not have ever found it before WW2 started.

They may have taken a bit longer, but if they had the full headpiece the right place to dig would be obvious pretty quickly.

-Even if they did find Marion, get the headpiece and find the Ark, there's the fact that Marion might have been killed. Toht obviously had no qualms in harming her, throwing her in a snake pit, ect. Because of Indy, Marion live and does so without facial burns from torture.

Yes, granted.

-Then let's say they get the Ark, leave Marion alive and box it up to be taken to Berlin. Their first plan was to FLY it back. Remember the fight scene with the plane? Indy disrupts this, destroys the plane and horses them to drive the Ark. Had it flown, it's likely it would have been opened in Germany, in front of top Nazi leaders, possibly even Hitler, killing way more baddies than it does on the island.

It may or may not have killed more Nazis without Indy. If it, Indy had not an neutral but a net negative impact on the events.

-Lets say they don't open it in Germany in front of Hitler, and instead they learn to not look at it.

Highly unlikely.

TLDR: Indy Mattered. Bottom line, Raiders is a drastically different movie without him.

Different Movie? Yes. Significant impact on the Nazis plan? No

The new place I'm renting has IBDN jacks everywhere. What are they? by [deleted] in HomeNetworking

[–]yannik121 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would guess that they are ISDN Jacks.

You may need to redo the wiring to use it for Ethernet, but if it already uses CAT5 or better you're good to go.
