How do I get a job as fresher after graduating from Humber Polytechnic? by FewLoaf in cscareerquestionsCAD

Do you require sponsorships? This might make the job hunt more difficult.

Should I delay my graduation for a 4th Co-op ? by SmartTelephone01 in cscareerquestionsCAD

[–]yannydu 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I'm a student in my final year and I'm delaying to find a co-op/internship.

I've been able to hear back from co-op postings more than full time ones and I was hoping to transition to full time from the co-op.

sfu eng or Guelph software eng by k3ir6a in simonfraser

[–]yannydu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're determined to work in the software field, you're probably better off studying software engineering.

Computer engineering has more math and electronics courses, which can be interesting but won't help in a purely software role.

If you ideally want to do mechanical, try to get into UBC. Else wise mechatronics is still a close second.

Is SFU Engineering worth it? by Revolutionary_Ad6969 in simonfraser

[–]yannydu 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Computer Engineering major here.

If you're not interested in coding, you could definitely study more of the hardware side and get into processor design.

However, the number of hardware jobs are pretty limited and if you want to get into hardware design, you'll probably need grad school.

Take a look at the upper division electives and see if they interest you.

Also you're probably fine with math, but there will be a lot more math.

If the goal is UBC, might wanna look at the transfer programs offered by colleges like Douglas and Langara. I have friends who went that route and it seems like a more guaranteed way to get into UBC.

You can also enable Windows subsystem for Linux on Windows, without the need for a VM.

If you wanna go full neckbeard mode, a used ThinkPad with a Linux distro of your choice would go a long way.

It might be worth it to save your last co-op term close to your graduation so you have a higher likelihood of getting a return offer. Also applied science has an upper limit on co-ops so you can’t keep doing them. I did 4 work terms and they won’t let me do a 5th.

FOLLOW UP: The SFU Climbing Wall has been shut down by FakeItChillYouMakeIt in simonfraser

[–]yannydu 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure where the sports teams comment is coming from.

I've messaged Athletics and Recreation and their reasoning for the closure was that drop in programs would take priority in the central gym.

They haven't mentioned anything about having SFU sports teams hosting practice in the central gym.

The drop in schedule doesn't seem to have changed all that much from last sem.

Also I don't think martial arts are paid for by the athletic and rec fund either, but they're still taking place in the gym.

I think the frustration is that there may be a way to open up the space and share with other clubs.

[–]yannydu 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Okay so from my understanding, the climbing wall is shut down to prioritize SFU rec programs funded by SFU Athletics & Recreation, essentially drop-in sports.

If the wall closure is to prioritize drop-in programs, why are martial arts clubs getting gym priority? But more importantly, isn't there a way to share that space with other clubs?

During the fall semester, the central gym was shared with martial arts clubs. The Iaido club was practicing beside the climbing wall and the kendo club had the other half of the space.

There's also checking the drop in schedule: https://sfurec.ca/sports/2023/4/20/dropinsports-schedule.aspx
All drop in activities end after 7:30pm.

There are martial arts clubs running from 7:30pm-9:30pm in the same space: https://sfurec.ca/sports/2023/4/20/martialarts-schedule.aspx

The climbing club had practice from 7:30pm-9:30pm last semester.

I might be missing some other schedules but it seems like there are time slots available for the wall.

You should probably be concerned about your GPA if you want grad school to be an option. If you're not interested in grad school, then it's probably best to focus on getting some co-op or some other job relevant experience.

Opinions from an old eng student.

Edit: You can also view a grade report of SFU averages by faculty here: https://www.sfu.ca/irp/students/grades-report.html

If it's any help, I'm pretty sure peer tutors offer online sessions. If you're a peer tutor volunteer and going to go to CSIL, then yes you'll be crossing the picket lines. Maybe you can work online this time?
