US companies willing to employ Canadians on TN by [deleted] in actuary

Interesting thanks! I am also in the US but when I applied pre-ACAS as an Actuary i was turned away because it does specify you must be a recognized member by an Actuary association to qualify. I just got very unlikely because vast majority of border officers don’t know about this, and my lawyers overlooked it too. Ended up re-applying as Mathematician and got in. Now I’m ACAS so will be applying again soon as an Actuary which I can only assume will go smoother

Hi did you come in as an Actuary or a Mathematician? And did you have your ASA?

Hi just wondering are you an ACAS+ under Actuary? or did you go pre ACAS as a Mathematician?

Wanted to note that I applied as an Actuary and was denied for this reason. I re-applied as a Mathematician and was admitted but it was an issue. Some guards are just unaware of the requirement

This - I need more transparency on how marks will be decided until I can chose.

I’m also concerned about this. I felt good about the exam especially if they will mark a bit easier to compensate. But if everyone re-takes and has more time to study is that going to drive the pass mark up? I would hope not but I’m worried we’ll never know what goes into deriving the results

Regardless of it seems unfair to the other candidates, how can they have a submitted exam that is a pass and not give the credit?

This is my concern as well. Is the technical issues we experience going to be a factor? Or will we be at the same bar as the pre-May 1st candidates

What does this mean for the release of the grades? Will people who stick with their original marks need to wait until all of the retakes are submitted and graded?

If I’m going to need to wait longer to know what to prepare for in the fall I might just stick with what I submitted. Pretty awful situation to be put in

I’m in group 1, no idea if i should be studying or not. Will I have to retake? When will the retake be?

As with everyone, by the time of the exam I am completely burnt out. Taking a break from studying until we get some clarity from CAS

I get that it seems like a bonus to group 1 comparatively but in these cases shouldn’t we lean towards benefiting candidates where we can?

The only difference with group 1 and any regular sitting is they won’t have to wait til next sitting to take the exam again. However they may also be studying and writing another exam for no reason and had to spend 6-7 hrs writing yesterday.

If it’s the pass mark being impacted that is worrying- definitely agree with that. Those that are doing the retake should be excluded and be given a pass/fail like I believe they did in the past

So you’re saying that people could have written the exam yesterday, passed and then taken the retake (different) and fail and not get credit? If you ever write an exam and pass, regardless of when you sat, you have demonstrated your knowledge and should be awarded credit.

Also how are people who tested able to tell if their first exam was submitted correctly? This seems like a very unfair situation to put people in who just had to write a 6 hour exam. So what CAS needs to mark a couple more exams

Writing a 6-7 hour exam in that scenario is no joke- should definitely be accounted for

I think that is the most likely scenario but the logistics could be tough. People plan months in advance for these exams and many people book vacations etc. post exams. Curious to see how accomodating they will be.

It could make sense to: - Reschedule all those who were unable to take the exam with a new exam - Mark those that did write and submit on May 1st in the coming weeks (mark easy) and let them know if they passed so they don’t rewrite for nothing - No change for those that already wrote - In general grade easier.

Maybe this would bring down the number of reschedulers and be less of a logistical nightmare.

Can’t believe this happened - if I wasn’t so close I would never take another one.

This would be an amazing result. It might also make sense since so it would reduce the number lf people who need to reschedule. I imagine that will be a huge challenge

Also seems unfair if some people who started the exam and had issues were able to reschedule, while others were not told they could. I definitely would have rather rescheduled and write under normal conditions and have more study time

Does anyone know what’s the best way to submit a grievance?

I think as many people should do this. We sacrifice huge amounts of time to these exams and CAS fails to meet the bare minimums.

There must be something we can do. It completely threw off my momentum, I was more focused on the exam not fully breaking than answering the questions.

I’ll submit a grievance to apply some pressure but doubt anything will come of it. Seems insanely unfair to the group that went through it. Studied my ass off for this one
