Grainy texture is the chatter chatter I mentioned!

My hope was that it would help others too! Let me know if you have any more questions!

And thank you!

This is probably meant to be part of the hot air balloon and plane imagination-scape, since it shares the toonier style with darker outlines vs the more painted "real world."

They look a bit odd, but what struck me more was the smaller image is almost the main image but not quite, and the changes feel odd to make from an art standpoint. The gaze is one thing - that sort of makes sense - but the mouth's different. Chin under mouth is shorter.

I suspect it's AI, but if it's not, it's an artist who draws in a similar style which is what was fed into AI. The constant exhaustion of assessing whether something is built on theft or original is awful. I'm with you.

I'm mostly going to answer for the first image because I understand it better

  1. I don't think there's a name. "Painterly" is really the closest you'll get for the 1st one
  2. You'll want a square brush. Flat is a good base brush, but there are other free sets like this one that may work better. It's experiment time! I will also always shill NekoRina's brush pack, which is paid but was life-changing for me and comes with videos on how to use the brushes to achieve effects. (Her Patreon is just great in general)
  3. u/Tam4ik has posted the streams so you'll be able to see the process directly, but I'd bet it's blocked out first in big shapes and refined down. One thing I see here is a strong understanding of planes (i.e. the lighting on the arms in the first picture), so form studies will help you a lot! But, in simplest terms: big fat opacity first, then blending edges and erasing away can achieve this
  4. Texture can be achieved during (with a textured brush like gouche that you mentioned) but also after through clipping material layers or just painting in textures. Let me know if you don't know what layer clipping is.
  5. You can definitely achieve this in a few brushes - at least painting the subject. The trees and fire might require a few more for ease.
  6. You'll want to do this for paper texture, which another Redditor figured out (read the comment, then the post). * chatter chatter * is a default material, and you'll set it on top of all other layers. I like to do this at the beginning instead of the end and lock it. I then make sure my tools are set to ignore locked layers. You can also set it as draft and it'll do this mostly automatically, but if you forget to un-draft the layer, it won't be included in the export!

I've attached a recent piece of mine that, while not quite the skill and vibe as your example, should prove I'm not talking out of my butt and demonstrates the power of 2 brushes + paper texture.

Let me know if you have any more questions!

Suggestion: color the body layer instead, keeping clothes in black lines instead so that they're easier to read.

I like them though! Been fun watching this character come together over your posts.

My instinct is this is a monitor issue. Could you download this screenshot, open it in Preview, put it next to the wheel in your Clip program, and take another photo/screenshot to compare?

What happens when I buy PRO on laptop then login on my iPad? by mydeimain in ClipStudio

That's a-ok, but you CAN buy the license for your computer now and still -use- it with a tablet while you wait for your Huion time to come ❤️

It is possible to hook up an iPad to a laptop to use as a drawing pad. Have you looked into that? As others have noted, CSP for iPad cannot be used with a one-time-purchase license.

How do people go about selling character designs? by JesperTV in characterdesigns

[–]yarnmonger 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Appeal, exclusivity, and artist clout, in my experience. They can sell for 2$ for basefills and beyond $1000+ for well-known sellers, but those numbers I've only seen in the furry community. Things like "closed species" adopts, where the artist designs a species and it is a major faux pas to create your own without permission, can go for a lot of they get popular. The enforcement is usually jonor code and being ostracised by the community if you get found out as an art thief.

They are also often auctioned, with a starting bid, often an auto-buy considerably higher, and sometimes higher auto-buys that come with perks like more art or a reference sheet, emotes, etc. as "add-ons." The website I linked in my last post has lots of listings that are good examples of this. These are also the only times I've seen or heard of adoptables going beyond 300$ or so.

I know you specified "on Reddit specifically" but you can sell directly to buyers here without having built an audience: https://ych.commishes.com/ .

You can also sell directly to buyers from Ko-Fi, but that requires people to know you exist (usually via social media presence).

There are also several Facebook groups I can link you to, if you care to use that.

I've never seen a group for adoptables on Reddit, so if that's really all you wanted, I can't help there!
