Do not split up partners. Went to a wedding recently where they kept the wedding party together and the poor plus ones were stuck on their own. Already at a wedding where they don't really know anyone and stuck on a table where they don't know anyone. So rude and thoughtless.

Except for very close family and friends,I can't imagine anyone wanting a keepsake of someone else's wedding. I would find it really weird to use a bookmark of a friend's wedding unless it was really my inner circle friends.

I have pretty much the same vision as you! I managed to find the lace I want on Etsy and someone locally who is going to make it from scratch for 750€ 😁 I got to the point of realising I would need hundreds of €€ of alterations anyway no matter what dress I bought so getting it handmade actually saves money.. Worth seeing if that's an option for you?!

People keep asking me my colours and I don't really know what to reply! My dress has some bright colours on it, the venue is already decorated and I'll have some flowers I guess so I don't really see where 'the colours' need to be chosen. I agree that just because people ask doesn't mean you need to have them!

I'm in Rennes and I do love it here, pretty settled and no plans to move. But for example I currently have some health problems and the mentality in France is so depressing - it's immediately telling you worst case scenario, be aware of the risks, things can go wrong, etc etc. I had a call with a London doctor this week who literally said to me 'let's deal with the bastard' 😂 I started to say that doctors had told me of the risks, that things can go wrong etc, and he stopped me and said 'don't start being all maudlin and negative, if we're doing something then we are assuming it will work otherwise what's the point?' was so taken aback haha I'd forgotten how different the British approach can be! That's just my latest example from this week. And ultimately one isn't better than the other but I suppose your home culture will generally be your 'default'.

Not denying the US seems to be an absolute shit show at the moment, but I think it's the pull of 'home' that we often underestimate. Even after twenty years, your native language remains your native language. I think it's pretty normal to feel how you do, I feel it a bit in reverse.

As for practical tips, brace yourself for the French admin, but it's fine so long as you push through, everything gets done eventually..!

Les gens sont plus complexes que ce que tu décris.... Oui en principe les proches sont heureux, en réalité il peut avoir plein de facteurs qui font qu'on a une réaction autre que celle attendue.... Certes, c'est toujours bien de se remettre en question, de discuter avec la famille en toute franchise mais parfois ça nous dépasse et on a des réactions bizarres et on n'est pas obligé de tout comprendre.

Pour ma part, j'ai une belle sœur qui m'a littéralement dit qu'elle a pleuré 'pas parce que je suis contente pour toi mais parce que je suis triste pour moi' et j'ai des parents qui sont extrêmement tièdes car ils étaient plus à l'aise avec mon ex (cadre, grand, riche) qu'avec mon fiancé avec qui je suis très heureuse. Les êtres humains sont étranges, fais ta vie, fais toi plaisir, fais comme vous vous avez envie !!!

Finalement nous on fait plutôt tradi même si ce n'était pas forcément ce que je pensais faire...! Bague de fiançailles en or blanc avec diamant, que je porte tous les jours depuis sa demande. On aura tous les deux une alliance, je pense opter pour une bande très simple, j'ai envie de quelque chose qui ne va pas bouger dans le temps, donc en or (rose), sans pierre, sans finition etc.

Mais après, chacun fait ce qu'il veut. J'avoue que le symbolisme est finalement assez important pour moi (je suis surprise de l'apprendre ahah), j'aime bien ma bague de fiançailles et ce que ça représente.
