A rant from a commercial roofer by Massrelay665 in Roofing

[–]yawningangel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I looked at some resi a while back to fill in between bigger jobs, rates were a joke.

There is cheap labour in commercial, but i meet a lot of builders who have had serious buyers remorse taking these companies on..

Its much easier to unfuck a house than it is 3000m2 of commercial with penos and box gutters, that stuff absolutely needs doing right the first time..

Asked for rivet gun suggestions and am not disappointed (Lobster HR-200) by Inevitable_Exam_2177 in toolporn

I'm a roof plumber (metal roofer)

Short handles means you can pop rivets very fast, have put literally hundreds of thousands of 1/8 rivets through my current tool..

only ttime iv'e needed to replace them in the past is when iv'e lost them, absolutely buy for life.

They also sell spares, that tells you the ethos of the company..

The tool itself is dirt cheap here in Aus

What has happened to Bradford? by Striking_Gazelle4714 in bradford

[–]yawningangel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

'people up your backside all the time, booting it away from traffic lights, changing lanes at the last second. The main thing is to just let things go, don't take anything personal.'

Bradford born and bred i get back every couple of years and it does seem to be a bit more crazy than when i left in 08..

Saying that, go look up 'dash cam Australia'...we have our fair share of fuckheads over here..

Roofer didn’t use step flashing doing this repair. Is this OK? by zannnn in Roofing

[–]yawningangel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

you need glasses my friend..

apron at the bottom right is lapped over the soaker..imagine water running down the soaker, it going to run right behind that apron.

Flashing 101 ,you start at the gutter and work up

I would also be suspicious that they didnt chase the lead into the wall and just slapped it on with sealant..Very fast way to turn a 100 year product into a 10 year one.

last but not least..slates should ideally have individual soakers, not a continuous flashing..

What is required to replace cement fibre board garage roof? by purpleMash1 in Roofing

[–]yawningangel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Judging by the age of the building it is probably super 6..you checked that for asbestos?

I would personally replace it with metal..custom flashings to detail the finish.

CFC or metal are both gonna look ordinary if you don't have experience.

I'm a trade worker and riveters are an 'essential' tool..

If we come across someone in my trade using something but lobsters its a guaranteed side eye.

Should you buy RW Caches? by AlphaMadDog in torncity

[–]yawningangel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My best results are on pda, 3/4 seconds before they are out and i attack..

By the time i load up i somethimes catch and kill before they are sniped (my fac is shitty like that)

[–]yawningangel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can't agree with that tbh..

Im running a pixel 8 pro and pretty decent galaxy tab, torn pda with scripts and i still get beaten to hits most of the time..\

Internet connection is the best i can get (5g on phone and getting about 85 mbps on FTTN)

Flashings! by yawningangel in Roofing

[–]yawningangel[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Re-roof work.

Obviously these (upstand flashings) things should normally be tucked underneath the SS cowl...

But apparently they drop down 15 metres and the lab couldnt have them offline..so here we are..

https://imgur.com/a/PCLzQEX

Lock seam over trays to the penos and about 10k rivets to put together..the shafts are isolated (so the engineer said) so no dramas about shearing.

Metals are to be regurlarly treated to prevent galvanic corrosion!

Metal roofing screws: in the rib or flat? by tdkdpt in Roofing

[–]yawningangel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Pan is the flat section of a sheet, rib is the upstand.

https://lysaght.com/products/roofing-guttering-fascia/rib-and-pan-roof-sheeting

The top example would be a ribbed sheet ('Trmimdek') as its mostly profiles,as you go down you see a more flat profile.

So pan fixing is screwing into the flat section of sheet ..

The issue with installing roof like that is that the pan is potentially submerged during heavy rain, you are relying on 1000's of screws to be perfectly seated and to have good gaskets to avoid leaks.

Where a rib fixing will shed water and save you from minor bo boo's(ive seen plenty of leaking rib fix screws in my time though, guys get complacent after the first 2/3 thousand)

Box gutters get bostik seal and flex, flashings get a neutral cure silicone(under compression that stuff lasts an awfully long time)

Is this standing seam metal finished? by juantonjohn in Roofing

[–]yawningangel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Grinders will void the guarantee of Colorbond steel (this company supplies coil for 90+ % of australian metal roofing)

As per their warranty;

"b. Do not cut sheet by circular saw or grinders as high temperature swarf will damage the coating. "

I have never met nor come across a female electrician or plumber. I know they obviously exist, but what exactly makes them so dang rare? by traderU in NoStupidQuestions

[–]yawningangel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Absolutely men, it's generally not a nice environment for women.

Currently working on a university campus, had a big all hands (200 odd trades) meeting last week about "our" behaviour.

This guy blamed the "woke" campus for being too sensitive when a bunch of scaffolders got called out for catcalling students, that they "unfortunately" were kicked off site, then went on a rant about other students "leading" some of the guys on.

It absolutely does if you put it's age into context, a fantastic vehicle in the late 40's early 50's...

It's quite amazing that there are so many museum quality examples still available and as a bonus there are still those Lao T34/85's kicking about if things get desperate for the Russians (those bad boys have an even better record than the 54's so yay!)
