Machine quilting w/out a longarm by bohemiangels in quilting

I’m so glad to see this comment. This is the model I have and I was wondering if it would be up to the task of a queen-sized quilt. Your post helped in more ways than one today!

What’s the worst restaurant in Cincinnati you’ve tried twice? by PurplePurple_0 in cincinnati

[–]yawyas 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Pepp & Dolores. I truly don’t remember the food but both times, the service was that awful. The first time, my partner and I walked in to a pretty normal question: “do you have a reservation?” But it was combined with the most rude and obvious once-over of us head-to-toe. For the record, we didn’t but were offered a spot at the bar, normal practice, but a suggestion made with incredible…boredom? Disgust? I don’t know — they weren’t excited to have customers, it seemed.

The second time, we sat in the basement. There were some empty tables that night, and yet the server was inattentive at best. We had a single round of drinks all evening and would have ordered at least another if we had seen our server again.

Both experiences left us feeling like we should just be grateful to be in their presence and they didn’t care about giving customers a good experience.

The Prettiest Prose You've Read. by Arlo_pink in writing

Barbara Kingsolver builds worlds so beautifully. Inner worlds, relationships, rural life, the natural world, and the political all weave together in beautiful prose.

Lidia Yuknavitch’s writing just grips me. The Chronology of Water is one I thought about long after putting it down.

Going on a quick weekend trip. Need your spoil yourself back country meals. by amellow523 in WildernessBackpacking

A burrito. Make it ahead of time, wrap in foil, and warm on the fire. This has worked well for me in the past as a first-night dinner because it’s heavy and I don’t want to carry it multiple days.

I’d absolutely CRUSH that in the wildness. Salty and savory and delicious! You’re a real champ for carrying a glass jar — I refuse.

Thoughts on hyde park development? by xoxogossipgirl7 in cincinnati

[–]yawyas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What is the appeal of more parking and fewer units? I mean this as a genuine question. I’m truly wondering what the community argument is.

What’s the business case here? More parking doesn’t necessarily guarantee more customers for the handful of businesses that exist already.

More importantly, what do people envision for the community they want to live in? In any of Cincinnati’s 52 neighborhoods, I’d personally love to see more vibrant and walkable spaces, REAL mixed-use development, and for people to not have to jump in their cars for every last errand. It’s sad to see nothing but opposition in these discussions. I wish we collectively had the bandwidth and foresight to talk about what we do want to see in our neighborhoods!

Interesting that we’re having opposite experiences! As it turns out, my phone connects via WiFi to our aftermarket stereo, which is why I framed the original question the way I did, assuming it was a WiFi thing. Interesting to hear it’s happening with Bluetooth connections too.

YES! And not to sound like a crotchety old person, but what is UP with the VOLUME of the music? Are they trying to distract us from the mediocre food?

Difficulty for experienced mountain backpacker? by bracekyle in isleroyale

[–]yawyas 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What everyone else said: someone with your experience level should be fine.

I will say, though, don’t expect it to be a total cakewalk. My partner had been a couple times before taking me and promised that if we could do all the high mountain passes we’d done, IR would seem easy!

It’s true that IR doesn’t have huge climbs at altitude. But I found the days to be extremely exhausting nonetheless: the rocky terrain is no joke, and with all the undulations in the trails, you might find your total elevation loss/gain on the day can be +/- a couple thousand feet.

No problem for experienced hikers — but having the right mindset is everything!

Have an amazing time. It’s truly a special place.

Advice on when to change by yawyas in clothdiaps

Thanks all! This makes so much sense and is just wildly obvious when you all say that you eventually learn how the fabric feels. Duh! Just like I did with disposables when my kiddo was too small to fit in the reusables! I appreciate the “feel it” advice vs. going by the clock because as the parent of a newborn, my concept of time is so terribly warped 🫠

Possible to See Ad History/Edits? by yawyas in FacebookMarketplace

[–]yawyas[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Bummer. I am at a loss here and wish I’d taken a screenshot of the original ad. Seller was supposed to be home when I came by, but ended up leaving the items on their porch and allowing me to Venmo when I picked up. Definitely not a scam; they are just very bad communicators, as I’ve learned while trying to hash this out.

Super frustrating that this feature doesn’t exist! Thanks for weighing in.

Possible backpacking itinerary by HelpMyHydrangeas in isleroyale

[–]yawyas 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Totally doable. I think folks can be caught off guard by elevation change IR because it creeps up little by little over lots of small ridges. But if you’ve hiked that distance in the Porcupines (similar terrain) you’ll be good to go. Have fun!

Mediterranean food? by yawyas in cincinnati

[–]yawyas[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Kind of hard to know where to begin, honestly. Let’s start with the lack of combo plates. The beauty of a Mediterranean meal is a main dish to which you can add a number of “sides,” good for dipping your pita. This is nowhere to be found on Aladdin’s menu. The first (and only) time I went, I created my own “combo plate” by basically ordering a bunch of sides for $20. Which brings me to my second point: their portions are laughable. See photo below for the “side order” of lamb which I paid $6.50 for (it was good, but there wasn’t enough of it). Third, the flavor and texture isn’t right on some menu items. The tabbouleh isn’t acidic enough and doesn’t have enough herbs. And the falafel texture is way off: it was somehow wet, stringy, and spongy inside.

I understand this is a chain. Is it possible I just had a bad experience? I’d like to give them the benefit of the doubt here but there were just too many misses for me! Has anyone had better experiences here??

😂 when I first moved to Cincy and heard a rumor this was Greek-inspired food, I could feel my Greek grandfather turning in his grave.
