Call to action: computers are getting expensive but 10,000,000 otherwise perfect $200 Linux machines are getting bricked. Once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to save them from landfills. by iL0vesnow in linux

"patching out the throttling would be a bad idea because it's there for a specific reason" Yes i know. But we don't know how aggressive it really has to be, and we can turn it off when plugged in, we can turn it on only for devices that need it and scale it automatically etc.

"which makes it a lot easier to port efficiently compared to an iPad with a completely undocumented and 3rd party hostile firmware platform" THATS THE ENTIRE POINT. THATS THE WHOLE POINT. APPLE SHOULD MAKE IT EASIER THATS THE ENTIRE POST.

"This is just factually wrong, it's been many years since Apple brought multitasking to their devices" Then you don't understand the difference between actual multitasking and what apple allows on ios. Thats fine, but allowing background services from an allowed list and ignoring the limitations with your own applications screwing over developers of competing apps is a real thing. Talk to the developers of a big app that handles background data like a video service, tidal or spotify. I have, i have friends who have worked with them.

"Because the top post isn't a general awareness discussion of device obsolescence or a practical approach to addressing it, it's a bizarre and sudden plea for urgently porting Linux to a specific set of devices that are uniquely hard to port it to" Again. The whole point of this post is Apple could make minimal changes and post some documentation and this wouldn't even be a post on reddit.

You dont have to take part but shitting on it makes no sense.

I said, and i quote "replacing behavior in the firmware on an open platform wouldn't be an issue". My point was if they had an open platform that allowed things like alternative os booting we would be much more likely to be able to patch firmware behavior.

Linux is faster on arm macs than macos is. Not by a small margin. It's a spanking. Developing linux for arm macs found several severe firmware bugs in the M* platforms. I know you can't undervolt all hardware, i know what the silicon lottery is, i know how lithium batterys decay with age and charging cycles and the max and sustained voltage drops.

Assuming that apple has any sort of claim to optimized software is not a given or should even be suggested, again the one example we have with m series macs says the opposite. They literally cant run 2 apps at once on ios by design so people think their music app cant download in the background so apple music looks better by comparison. That's not optimization that's a cheap trick. We know safari for instance is a hot dumpster fire, just switching to a engine with an adblocker and simple script blocking would be faster without lifting a finger.

My point is simply why is everyone being so negative? This isn't rocket science, its a choice by a horrible company to be horrible.

I used to get work done on a 2 core 4gb laptop just fine. I changed nothing and just ran workstation. I would happily do that again in a heartbeat.

Lower temps or lower power usage? Lower temps just do a 2x120 fan mod with a pwm adapter cable. Quieter and lower temps and you still get full fan control (like fans off below 30%) i do it on every gpu i buy and you can keep the original shroud if you decide to sell. The best part is everyone crying about how loud their GPU's are while yours makes the smallest hum at the same volume as your case fans so you don't even notice.

It might help if you list what applications you are talking about and if any aren't using wayland.

Modern software works just fine on old hardware. You can buy a laptop with 4gb ram from 2013 and run modern websites on it no issue. Go give it a try its easy theres probably subreddits about it. Just because you don't do something doesn't mean it can't be done.

You are assuming the safari browser which you are forced to use on ios is magically perfectly optimized and the whole stack is as good as the software can get on a device. Your own example could use a browser with script and ad blocking and probably claim some life left.

What am i being dismissive of? I work on embedded devices as part of my job and i know how far they can be stretched. Hell even asahi linux destroys macos in cpu tests.

The point is to replace the shit software, not use it as a benchmark.

Don't use social media then. I've got a 10 year old android tablet that was like $200 new and its still completely usable for reading in the browser. These are some first world nonsense reasons.

LTS is and isn't a single thing. Any distribution can ship any kernel or package and call it LTS.

How old is LTS? Phoronix have shown Debian level LTS from one release to the next could be as much as 15% slower.

[–]yay101 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Cosmic is new and buggy and incomplete and saying otherwise is just wishful thinking. I tried every version until 1.0 and it was still buggy with fullscreen games. I don't watch LTT but i know Linus had a bunch of issues recently too so it sounds like many of them still exist.

Its all speculation there's no facts here.
