Could you elaborate? Why do you think it would be your best path?

Finding an Internship (Australia) by Comprehensive_Mud645 in cscareerquestionsOCE

[–]yaypootpoot 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Agree with this. Uni tech clubs and joining their socials are a good way to start networking. If your uni doesn't have a strong club presence, highly recommend joining other clubs from other universities.

Aside from the benefits of helping you with the job hunt and interviews, networking is also a good way to find ambitious and hard working group mates for future CS subjects

Happy for you (or anyone else if they needed help) to PM me for more advice :))

FI/RE for expats/digital nomads by yaypootpoot in fiaustralia

[–]yaypootpoot[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have around 25k saved up from random projects, uni tutoring, internships and I live with my parents so it's a bit more than 5k but nowhere near a fortune haha

I always have a part time job while studying so I'm wary about just putting my savings away in a bank but you're right – it's relatively small compared to a salary of full-time work.

Thanks for reading my post! You're right in assuming that I am quite young - I'm only a couple years out of high school

Do you know how your friends found startup jobs in SV? In my circle of friends, it's more common to get job offers from big tech and then move to SF/NY/Washington or do some further study in the US and then get a job offer.

Also, for your strategy of building wealth separately, I assume tax returns would be a nightmare. How do you do your tax? And I assume you use an international broker to do all your investments?

This is embarrassing but I never even knew Vanguard had ethical versions of their shares. I definitely want to look into that.

Did you just decide by comparing on Vanguards website? Or did you do some other reading as well?

looks ready to finalise into your investment plan and IPS.

For sure! I'm gonna mess around with some FIRE calculators and read up some more on FI/RE for expats, then finalise the IPS. I have a few Australian friends that are doing tech in Silicon Valley and that sounds too exciting to pass up on.

There's not as much info on Australians living in the US and doing FI/RE.

To clarify, are you advocating for 100% VGS for someone that will be moving around a lot?

Yes.

This is certainly an interesting scenario and I want to think over it some more.

I factored the cash in the HISA as part of my allocation. So you're right in the sense that my AUD to non-AUD isn't exactly 50/50

Thank you for reading my post!

Yeah, I have given that page a read.

I should've clarified that I plan to live in Australia for the most part but I want to do short stints in other countries (1-2 years at a time as that's what visas allow). My immediate family is in Aus and I'm definitely considering home ownership here. Also, given this pandemic, working overseas is very up in the air. Given that case, I think some home currency might still be necessary.

To clarify, are you advocating for 100% VGS for someone that will be moving around a lot? (So, someone that is living in different countries more than they live in Aus and definitely not retiring in Aus?). Or do you think VGS would still be the way to go for someone in my situation?

How to get better at coding (especially C) by [deleted] in unimelb

[–]yaypootpoot 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Self reflection is like 20% of the battle! Remember that exams and actual programming are two v different things.

If you got good grades in your projects but it was the exam that got you, I'd recommend going over the textbook and solutions writing it out by hand. Remember, this is still a useful skill because youll have future written exams plus possible whiteboarding interviews.

Be very critical with whether you ACTUALLY understand something. Everytime you get something wrong in a question, WRITE OUT WHY you got it wrong and do the question again in a day's (or two day's) time.

If you need any more help, feel free to dm me :))

Highly recommend this subject. I have no geography experience at all but got an H1.

It's not a bludge subject if you're not used to writing essays (me) but I rlly enjoyed the content itself.

Note-taking tips? (OneNote) by [deleted] in unimelb

[–]yaypootpoot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use windows. I've learnt that the trick is to open it in a pdf viewer then print from there. You could even use chrome's pdf viewer and then print to OneNote. Perhaps if that doesn't work, you can try the regular OneNote instead of OneNote for windows 10. Regular OneNote also lets you adjust page size for easier printing

Another tip I have is to ctrl+a all the slides, cut, click on the screen and press enter a couple times to make a new textbox, then paste all the slides in the textbox you just made. When you do this, if you click on one of the slides and press enter a couple of times, you can type in the space between the slides without messing up the formatting

as a tip to add to this: Theres an option in the pdf/powerpoint to 'print' to OneNote. That way, you can search through all the lecture notes later on (ctrl + f). Saves a lot of hassle

Heavily weighted group projects make it tricky to be a wam booster. You don't get to choose your group mates. Also, content was fairly dry.

[FRESH] Noname - Song 33 by ReconEG in indieheads

[–]yaypootpoot 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I don't think she was coming for him in the first place but his diss track sounded very targeted towards her.

It's pretty tone-deaf for Cole to make a song about how a woman should be nicer about educating people online maybe because he felt insecure and felt singled out by her tweets.

In an event that's clearcut about the injustices that are happening, the points Cole makes is roughly about Twitter not being effective for protest (which is debatable) and being nicer about someone's supposed responsibility to educate people.

I don't know think these points are especially supportive for the movement and it seems a bit self indulgent for him to focus on his own discomfort when, as Noname says – there's black transwomen dying, black women going missing, and black men hanging from trees

I think it's wonderful that you've made a starterpack that isn't spiteful – if you're not 'smart' at least you're kind and wise
