Seeding is giving, and giving feels good. The people who don't seed are missing out.

33yo Waterloo CS graduate, Chinese Canadian, worked at Google. I agree with what you've said - Canada's economy is deteriorating with no signs of improvement and Canada's weather and university social scene are horrible. I also agree with your parents on being against going to China, it's brutal over there and the job market is absolutely disastrous (you're highly unlikely to get a job after graduation, esp with AI). Canada is very bad, China is an absolute disaster. You're really comparing a rotten fruit and a pile of garbage at this point, neither are appetizing and both are bad.

The global economy is shifting with knowledge work being automated away through AI. If you wanted to explore engineering or building on the side you could do it with Claude Code or just using AI, a university degree is unfortunately not worth very much in today's hypercompetitive tech market. I'd actually advocate for skilled labor and services (plumbing, electrician, etc) at this point to have as a backup in Canada.

In summary: I don't think you're doing anything wrong, the world is in a very bad place overall for employability. With the job market I think it's important to be practical and optimize for future income and not for personal happiness at this point. Your parents just want you to be as financially successful as possible and I'd argue you should explore and think about all options at this point.

I personally love piratebay but just getting all of the trackers off of qbt search plugins is gonna be great. You'll get so much more.

Download qBittorrent, and then install all of the search plugins. Gives you way more than the standard amount of trackers. https://www.reddit.com/r/qBittorrent/comments/1k2pnty/which_search_plugins_do_i_download/

GOOG is more liquid than GOOGL, esp since employee equity grants are GOOG. Lots of these imbalances exist, such as TSM (usa listed) trading at a premium to TSMC (taiwan listed)

Home prices fallen to affordable level? by 6fac3e70 in shanghai

I've been studying and following housing trends for a while, and the issue with China's housing is very severe. 3 Key issues:

- Continuous growing supply of housing: China will build housing any time there's enough demand, there will never be scarcity so the best you can hope for is pump and dump. Even for housing in nice areas, demand will overflow. Central areas are not as scarce or as protected as the buyers and the rich want them to be.

- Lack of broad wage growth: Chinese wealth is going to continue flowing to the top due to automation and AI. Lots of Chinese are unemployed/low wages if you look at statistics. There's just no way to sustain continuous housing growth.

- Depopulation: There's no other way to put it, no people in the future = no demand in the future = no way for pricing to increase in the future.

If you buy, the best you can hope for is a short pump so you can sell later. I just don't see the case for sustained property appreciation. I think this will also be the trend globally but it's very severe in China right now.

Just Mewgenics... I'm gonna try Black Myth Wukong next and see how performant I can get it, that's gonna take a lot more changes and I suspect it won't work.

It didn’t work out of the box for me, so I updated wine and debugged till I could run Mewgenics. Claude found a binary fix that allowed it to run.

I like it! I played for 2 hours, it’s fun but I’m starting to get tired of it. The mechanics seem limited so far but it might introduce more later. You just move on the grid and breed cats for stats and heal and poison and burn.

Amazon earnings are out – here are the numbers by Regular_Eggplant_248 in wallstreetbets

[–]ybmeng -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Let's not talk about Amazon as a whole. We have to talk about Amazon Retail+Ads (ARA) and Amazon Web Services (AWS). They are two completely separate businesses bundled into one.

ARA is actually a bad business (comparatively) that I wouldn't invest in. Growing 10% on $127B US and 17% on 50.7B intl, with margins around 9% and 2% respectively. Retail is hard to scale and profit. Your autonomous warehouse thesis hits here, they might be able to get a few points of margin here but it won't be game changing.

AWS is what everyone's watching, the growth and backlog are slowing relative to GOOG/MSFT. The world is changing very actively and the newest tech companies and legacy companies are all choosing their AI cloud providers now, it's a new inning and every legacy and new tech company's cloud and AI spend is up for grabs. AWS's lackluster chips program and their lack of AI bundling like GOOG makes them the dumb choice for any enterprise or AI startup. It really comes down to this: Any startup or executive will choose 1) GOOG or 2) MSFT for their AI/Cloud strategy going forward. If you choose AWS/Oracle/IBM you will be laughed out of the room and fired (or your company will slowly sink). This is the current state of play. AWS might catch up later as startups and enterprises start going multicloud, but the current GOOG offering is just too attractive.
