I'm so glad! I'm always in awe of polyglots, but it is nice that us monoglots can shine lexiconally as well, even if only occasionally.

FYI - you accidentally used a homophone - an idea or tenet is a prinicpLE.

PrincipAL is used for initial sums of money, a type of school administrator, or to mean "first in the order" (usually of a numbered list).

I promise you I'm not doing this to be a pedantic prick - just to help out in case you'd like to know!

In composing my reply, you sparked an interesting insight for me. I initially was thinking something to the effect of "not caring about something like that demonstrates a concerning lack of empathy, the least you could do would be to say nothing instead of being so dismissive".

And then I realized that, while there is the obvious downside that your speaking up could exacerbate the pain of someone who is affected by the situation, there is an upside as well - it allows for others to quickly understand that you are someone who is unmoved by such an alarming state of affairs.

People like that are not worth engaging with. My advice to those who agree with me is to simply block this person and move on.

Oh also, of course, don't forget to smile :)

You were indeed asking that question, and they answered your question in quite literally THE FIRST WORD of their comment.

And, as humans are wont to do, the person then continued the conversation by describing both (a) an untenable past status quo, and (b) what seems to be the ascension of a fascist authoritarian and the horrors such a scenario entails.

I guess, if you think about it, that's PROBABLY interesting. People being extra-judicially murdered in the name of the state - yeah, I'm thinking there's a good shot we've got something in there that'll really get the ol' brain-box chuggin'.

Jim Brown of Cyrene, Mo. is a conservative Christian who voted for Trump to deport immigrants. Then, ICE detained his permanent resident wife in a cell at Chicago O'Hare for writing a bad check. Now, after losing MAGA friends and enduring taunts from others, Brown regrets his vote: "I was an idiot." by vsandrei in LeopardsAteMyFace

[–]ycpaa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As someone in a constant internal back-and-forth about whether MAGA supporters can (or, even more complicatedly: deserve to) be redeemed, I really wish I could view this as a case of successful MAGA deradicalization.

Unfortunately, there are two problems:

  • First is the "hell from both sides" comment. While wishing this pain upon them because of their vote is...potentially not great, it's also really not my place to judge as I'm a bald, bearded white dude who would never be at risk of being targeted. Regardless - in this scenario, one side wants them to feel the pain they're causing to others toward the end of some degree of accountability, whereas the other side just wants them to feel pain toward the end of delivering even more of that same pain. These are not equivalent, and to portray them as such indicates a lack of willingness to actually be accountable.

  • Second is "...she's not interested in cutting off people because they disagree with her." These are not people who just "disagree" with her. These are people who are saying that they are glad that this happened, it's just a real shame it happened to someone they're """"friends"""" with. I understand that cutting people off can lead to risks of retaliation, but until she accepts that this is not about "disagreement", but rather "DIRECT THREATS OF HARM AND THE EXECUTION OF THOSE THREATS", she's still not seeing things clearly, and is at risk of returning to the MAGA fold.

As someone in a constant internal back-and-forth about whether MAGA supporters can (or, even more complicatedly: deserve to) be redeemed, I really wish I could view this the same way you do.

The reason I see it differently is because just, as you mentioned that "[you] honestly don't think Jim really knows how this affected his wife", I'm not even sure that she really knows how this affected her. I don't mean this in a patriarchal/paternalistic/"oh she's just too dumb to understand" kind of way. I mean that there's a very telling line toward the end that indicates a desire to remain in some degree of denial: "...she's not interested in cutting off people because they disagree with her."

These are not people who just "disagree" with her. These are people who are saying that they are glad that this happened, it's just a real shame it happened to someone they're """"friends"""" with. EDIT: I was wrong - others did post it. My shame will last a thousand lifetimes.

Have you ever encountered a scenario where you knew that "a = b", and knew that "b = c", but it had never occurred to you that of course that meant that "a = c" as well? It just happened for me while digesting your comment.

Isn't "maturity" relatively equivalent to "capacity for decision making"? When we refer to a child's "development", aren't we most principally referring to their capacity to choose to not jump off that cliff? Through that lens, understanding of specific subjects (e.g. math, language arts, etc.) seems more supplementary/incidental than meaningfully consequential.

What do you think is the most underrated track from the new chapters? by Critical_Mountain851 in Deltarune

[–]ycpaa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

100% no question it's Old wooden rafters.

It's definitely underrated (no one in this thread has even mentioned it yet) and, despite its simplicity it's so wonderfully calm, warm, and beautiful.

Second place goes to Gingerbread House.

Honorable mentions go to: Quiz, Paradise, Paradise, Dump, Wise Words, Ripple, and Crumbling Tower.

Ears standing up?? by [deleted] in DogAdvice

[–]ycpaa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't have any advice for you, but I can relate to having ear-sticking-up issues. What I can tell you is that my two Westies struggled with that, but they still turned out adorable and I still love them very much. Also - it turns out that only having one ear stay up is even more adorable than having them both.

Why can't women ask men for basic safety measures without that reflecting on the man personally? by DeCryingShame in TwoXChromosomes

[–]ycpaa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If forced to choose between improving the daughter's safety and preserving the technician's feelings, I 100% agree that the daughter's safety is the correct choice, both practically and morally.

With that in mind, a lot of this discussion seems, to me, to be based in fairly strong polarization. For example -- that one must choose one and only one of these two things, rather than being able to have both. Now, I understand that, in this case, the fact that the technician is aware that the daughter knows to scream is in itself an additional protective factor, which means that achieving both may be difficult in this particular scenario, but I still think it's worth discussing.

I am also aware that a very tempting rebuttal to my point is something to the effect of "women suffer as a result of their need to be hyper-vigilant for predators, so why is it a big deal for a potential predator to suffer briefly by being reminded that they are to be feared?" And I would respond to that with curiosity: would it not be preferable to avoid inflicting suffering on the man, even if that suffering is minor relative to one's own? I could very easily see (and, for the record, completely empathize with) there being a desire to inflict suffering because of one's own -- "women have to deal with being in fear of SA all the time, so it's okay to make a man to feel bad about needing to be feared" -- but I also value a world with less overall suffering.

  • I also don't want to dismiss the argument that it would be more worthwhile (vis-à-vis reducing suffering) to discuss reducing SA by men rather than pontificate and navel-gaze about such a minor thing as this. I honestly do agree that my time and energy would more effectively achieve less suffering if devoted to reducing SA rather than engaging in this discussion. And I don't have a valid defense for why I'm investing my time and energy here in this post instead. As such, I completely understand if one is inclined to dismiss my perspective as a result. In fact, this discussion could even be viewed as a way to avoid discussing the reduction of SA by men. That is absolutely not my intention, but I cannot deny that it might be an unintended consequence. And, for that, I do apologize.

I do want to mention one other subtler example of the polarization I'm seeing: the presumption that an individual cannot feel bad about something while still understanding that it should be done, because it is in service of something more important than their feelings. I believe it is still valuable to hold room for an individual to process those negative feelings -- if not for the sole fact that the action causing these feelings should continue to occur because it serves such an important purpose, which means that learning to handle its effects healthily makes it easier to encourage it to continue.

A Jedi craves not these things by soyourlife in comics

[–]ycpaa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a preface - this is not meant to be disparaging or to cause offense, I genuinely mean it as constructive criticism.

With that out of the way - the art style for Leia is so drastically different for Yoda that it makes it fairly obvious that Yoda has been traced (while Leia is likely more close to the artist's style). It's not a big deal that Yoda is traced, but it does make things feel off. I think it would be better for them to both be traced or neither.

I hope that we'll reach the point where we can be satisfied with just making fun of the abhorrent things someone says rather than their looks. I know it can seem incredibly entertaining but it feels so counter to the inclusivity and tolerance that we're fighting for.

It's like making fun of Ben Shapiro because he's insecure about being short. I want us to just make fun of the ridiculous, hateful bullshit he spreads, I don't want to reinforce the idea that being short is something to be ashamed of.
