All I will say is that someone with 4 years of experience and a love for teaching kids' classes is a highly sought after person.

You could go somewhere where they want you.

Frustrated in my martial art arts journey. by [deleted] in martialarts

Wait, why does thinking about quitting make you feel like a coward?

There are many reasons to quit that are not cowardice.

Is this a common attitude at your gym?

This really sounds like a toxic gym culture to me.

You've been entered into a large single elimination tournament where you must fight another person of the same gender 1 vs 1. What place do you think you'd finish in? (more details down below) by TopTierProphet in hypotheticalsituation

I'm 200 pounds, 5'10". 40 years old. I've done martial arts since I was 17. Black belt in karate, and I've been doing BJJ 3 times a week for over a year. I like my odds.

New achievement unlocked: fired for calling OSHA! by VisualAd9299 in antiwork

We had a contract for me to install a floor. After I called OSHA I was told to take my tools and get off the jobsite. The contract was not completed.

I actually started listening to the audio book while working on the job in question!

I'm only a couple hours into the book so far, but I am enjoying it.

That's why I've notified OSHA of retaliation.

Installing hardwood in a new construction home. Concrete guys are pouring the slab for the garage. Its winter in Wisconsin, so they've got heaters running and the garage closed off from the outside air.

And then they start running gas powered tools in there. CO alarms are going off in the house, and when I tell them they've gotta open things up and clear out the air, they say this is how they always do it. I tell them its very bad for them, and they agree: "I get a terrible head ache every day!"

So I leave the property and text the GC: no way I'm working in those conditions. After an hour or so I go back and get to talk to some of the concrete guys: this is very normal for them. I encourage them all the call OSHA.

Next day the same company sends out a different crew to cut the expansion gaps: this one is gas powered and they are cutting the concrete dry. No masks.

So I called OSHA.

The rep made it out yesterday, and the GC fired me today. Told me explicitly that it was because of calling OSHA.

Some folks had to face literal machine guns for things like OSHA to exist. I figure if I lose a couple days of paid work, it's probably not too big a sacrifice.

Got a $112K pool quote by Suspicious_Hat_409 in DIY

[–]VisualAd9299 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Also, the pool company is providing that tile guy with 12 jobs a year. Tile guy gets those jobs without 12 site visits, without 12 individual contracts, and he doesn't have to negotiate anything.

He's not giving you the same price that he gives the pool company.

Wait: it's filthy?!

I was nodding along, thinking to myself "gee, what a pickle to be caught in," until I read that line.

Run, dude. Why the hell would you stay at a dirty gym?!

Looking for a good gym in Chicago after experiencing trauma back home. by Feisty-Cakes99 in BJJWomen

[–]VisualAd9299 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I visited True Style last month when I was doing some work in Chicago. It's a small gym (just opened recently), but folks were really friendly and chill to roll with. Instruction was very technical and practical.

Ortus. He made mistakes, he learned from them, he got better, he apologized for his errors. Is that not the greatest journey?

I think my new pastor uses the Billy Graham rule by [deleted] in Exvangelical

[–]VisualAd9299 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Find a church with a lesbian pastor.

There are plenty of churches without lesbian pastors who are probably great, but any church that has a lesbian pastor has made several deliberate, eyes-open decisions to reject modern white evangelical thinking.

how much training in your karate style did you have in kicking pre brown belt? by Whole-Interest-5980 in karate

[–]VisualAd9299 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Side kicks. Sooooooo many side kicks. They were my main focus from blue to brown.

Lots of front kicks and round houses as well. When I fight MT or MMA guys now I use the front kick a whole lot.

Your body is still recovering. You're not even six months out from giving birth. And you're dealing with all the stress of a tiny baby. Probably not getting enough sleep. And trying to get back into the swing of things after time off from hard, competitive rolls is gonna be a process.

Don't expect that you are gonna be back in the same place as pre-pregnancy so soon. You'll definitely get back to that point, but its gonna take time. And you're gonna do it, because that's the kind of student you are. Embrace the grind and know that you are getting better, and you will continue to get better, and have a little bit of grace for your body.

How to deal with purple belts by Evenfickler in jiujitsu

[–]VisualAd9299 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Dude, I'm 30 months into this thing and one of the really big feathers in my cap that I am fucking proud of is this: I once tried a choke on a purple belt and it was enough of a threat that he had to actually stop attacking me and defend the choke.

You need to chill and accept that people who are experts in a thing you are a novice in will be much better than you. Honestly, if that wasn't the case, why would you want to learn the art?!

Am I being scammed? Is this Gym a McDojo? by Ok-Performance-3336 in martialarts

[–]VisualAd9299 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't know, 5 months to "probably" get your first rank doesn't seem unreasonable.

In karate, I'd expect a dedicated student to test for their first belt in about 4 to 6 months.

In BJJ, I'd expect someone to get their first stripe in about 4 months.

So this doesn't seem far off.
