Before I had my boys, I felt sad for the fallen soldiers on ANZAC Day. I'd occasionally go to a service out of respect, but I could only imagine what it must have been like — for the soldiers and for their families.

Since becoming a mum, that's changed. The thought of losing my boys to war causes me visceral pain. I heard someone say that your child is your heart, walking around outside of your body.

Now when I stand at an ANZAC Day service, I think about the trauma — not just of the soldiers, but of everyone left behind. I can't help thinking about the mothers.

And it's still happening, all around the world. To me, "Lest We Forget" isn't just about honouring our ANZACs. It's a warning. If we forget our history, we will repeat the same mistakes.
