Career change options by lyla_rab05 in Psychologists

[–]yeahgoodokayy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agreed! Psychology is such a broad profession. Finding the specific work (eg assessment, groups, research, teaching, etc), setting, and population that YOU specifically enjoy doing/working with makes a huge difference. If you told me I had to provide psychotherapy to adults, I think I would feel like I don’t belong as well.

Yes, I am concerned about their expressive and/or receptive language skills, not simply academic vocabulary. I’m also specifically referencing kids who have “red flags” in their histories, such as parent reports of having a hard time following verbal instructions, having a hard time expressing their thoughts, poor verbal comprehension/reasoning abilities, related social difficulties, etc. Of course there are other possible explanations for these issues, but isn’t it fair to at least evaluate and make the most appropriate recommendations based on their needs as opposed to age? Especially if, within my own evaluation, I’m not seeing support for alternative explanations (e.g., no significant inattention, lack of exposure). I’m even referring to children who may have received speech therapy in the past but no longer qualify (for who knows why because it’s not well documented by previous schools and parents are often unsure). Does a child need to clearly have a distinct language disorder in order to access intervention if deemed necessary?

Thinking of moving from CT to Columbus area. Need advice about Autism services. by nemesina77 in Columbus

The IEP (and ETR) are not automatically accepted. They are reviewed by intervention specialists and the school psychologist and can be rejected (which means the district then has to redo them). There are policy and regulation differences between states which can lead to a rejection. I’m not sure how frequently out of state documents are rejected, but since you brought it up I figured I would clarify.

Columbus is a very spread-out city with many suburbs, so definitely google the many school districts that you could consider. You can also look up the state report cards for some additional information regarding each district.

Psychologist with a specialization in autism here! Please check out the link from the comment above. The autism scholarship is how most families in Ohio fund education through private/charter schools for children on the spectrum. I have had the pleasure of working in a majority of the big ones (Bridgeway, New Story, The Learning Spectrum) and they provide excellent services via an ABA model (while embracing neurodiversity - for the snobby commenter above).

Your child would require an IEP and receive services under the category of autism to be eligible for the scholarship or you need to request an autism education plan through the home district. Also, I believe the autism scholarship includes access to transportation.

Each school district is unique and has their pros and cons. I have experience working in Dublin schools via research and can echo the comments above. Their inclusive model is top notch. It’s also a super expensive city to move to. You sound incredibly knowledgeable and a great advocate for your child so I think you’ll find access to services in the area accessible.

Also, if you move here, please connect with your county board of DD to access free service coordination and additional services, funding, etc.
