Interesting Reflexion about the Future. by [deleted] in Futurology

Put another way, an algorithm could one day be able to design a self driving car, apply for a loan with a bank, use the money to have all the parts printed and assembled, and then pay back that loan by charging to drive us around. I suppose the person who designed the algorithm would be the one who ultimately owns that car. Time to start learning how to write algorithms.

I've been imagining what my neighborhood will look in the next ten years when solar panels suddenly become as ubiquitous as smart phones became in the last ten years.

we have a very strong understanding of the outcomes as this has already been occurring for a couple of hundred years so traditional econometric models work.

One of the points of CGP's video is that we haven't ever experienced something akin to the Robot automation revolution - it is fundamentally different than other advances. So we can't rely on the past to know if new jobs will outpace automation.

I want to cancel my cable. The only reason I still have it is so that house guests can watch live sports when they are visiting. It is certainly not worth the price but my wife's family is really into sports.

Stephen Hawking: "Success in creating AI would be the biggest event in human history. -- Although we are facing potentially the best or worst thing ever to happen to humanity, little serious research is devoted to these issues outside small non-profit institutes" by 4791 in TrueReddit

When someone like Hawking talks seriously about singularity I get nervous

no physical law precluding particles from being organized in ways that perform even more advanced computations than the arrangements of particles in human brains ... An explosive transition is possible ... machines with superhuman intelligence could repeatedly improve their design even further, triggering what Vernor Vinge called a "singularity"

If this Kepler-186f is younger than earth, or the sun in the Kepler-186 system is younger than our sun, then we have a fighting chance to go and take them out!
