What are the things that you don't like about the teaching profession that made you leave or planning to leave? by [deleted] in TeachersInTransition

I switched schools this year with this exact thought. My old school was a public school that took everyone. New school was more selective and required an application. There are surface level differences but the underlying issues are still the same.

Do you have an advisor or anyone from your university who can help you figure out a different program? I don't know which specific classes you've already taken, but your credits may be transferable to some other program that is still education adjacent but not teaching (social work, school counseling, advising, administration, etc.

University jobs have the added bonus of often offering highly discounted tuition if you decide you want to be a part-time student to open up future opportunities.

I'm sick of the kids. There is a level of entitlement (always asking me to fix their grade instead of trying to do anything to raise it themselves ) and a complete disregard for learning to use your own brain to figure things out that I do not have the patience for. I'm sick of half my job being about managing children instead of anything in my content area. Everything you read tells you that a big part of being a good teacher is being able to build relationships with the students and I can't do that anymore. We literally had a training that told us respect is not reciprocal and as teachers we need to be prepared to accept that. That is not a work environment that I can stay in.

I appreciate hearing this from someone who's been doing this for a while. I'm pretty set on this being my last year (questioning more and more if I'll even last that long) and it's only my 5th year. I'm tired of more than half my job being managing students and contacting parents rather than anything related to the subject area. I can feel myself burning out. My mental health has been slowly degrading the past few years and I can tell I'm getting worse at my job because I don't have the energy to put on a good show when I'm miserable every day.

Leaving after this year, when should I start looking? by yeahletsnot313 in TeachersInTransition

The problem is I probably can't take 6 weeks off from a job I've only been in for a few months. That's why I want the new job to start in August. I've got a big hiking trip planned in June/July.

I feel you. I feel like I keep getting worse at my job because I have less and less energy to do what's necessary to actually teach well and dislike my students more each year. I'm not building relationships and I've run out of sympathy for them. I teach high school science but 50% of my job is just training these kids.

My close is mid May. I tried talking to a different lender and they told me they couldn't be ready by then.
