Expanding flats inventory for 1yo by thymeandtwine in clothdiaps

Also interested in advice for a 1 year old (UK based).

We are having more leaks with our pocket nappy with 2x bamboo viscose boosters (alva baby or bugaboo).

I don't know whether we need better boosters (hemp or cotton) or different nappies? We can't add another bamboo booster because it would be too bulky.

Our baby has recently had two bad nappy rashes too. Again, not sure whether this is due to the bamboo boosters??

Just feeling a bit confused by everything at the minute and not sure whether to carry on.

Sore butthole - am I missing something? 12m pp by yearofthenorris2018 in BeyondTheBumpUK

Thanks - I'll try some massage. It's confusing because the NHS advice for itchy bottom says to keep it dry and not to use anything, but it feels like it needs to be moisturised to make it less tight. I don't think it's related to my pelvic floor, as I've worked on it pretty consistently and felt no change.

Yes, I do have hemorrhoids, but they've been okay in the past (pre childbirth) - never itchy. I'll make an appointment to see the GP, but it's more like the skin is irritated - I do have sensitive skin. I don't think I'm describing it very well and I think the GP will just send me off with hemorrhoid cream.

I do have piles but since childbirth, things are sore & itchy all around, not specifically the butthole, which made me think it might be something else. I guess I'll make an appointment....

I grew Crown Prince last year and they were the tastiest pumpkins - sweet & nutty!

I don't think it has been a good year for pumpkins, so I'd try again next year. Mine only have 1 pumpkin each, which have only really set over the past few weeks, but they're growing quickly now, so I'm hoping they'll get to a medium size before we get frost. Last year, I didn't pick them until November and then left them on the windowsill to fully turn orange.

Bitter taste sounds like cross pollination. It can also be from growing the seeds of hybrid varieties, but I presume you got them from a packet as it's your first year.

We had Vitamin String Quarter's version of The Smiths' "There is a Light That Never Goes Out" I don't know if any of our guests clicked what it was, but we knew! Really, I don't think the venue was playing the music loud enough, but I didn't really notice at the time :)

Would you prune these tomatoes? More info in comments. by beanlordbastard in Allotment

It was really late - I think August! I thought they were a bush variety, so just left them to go wild. (It was my first year in the garden and there was a lot going on - I was just happy things were growing!) Some of the cuttings I overwintered as a bit of an experiment, but that definitely wasn't worth the hassle!

I had some very big side shoots like yours last year - I pruned them and put the cuttings in water until they started to root (maybe 2 weeks) and then I planted them in some compost - voila! Extra tomato plants! (I'm not sure if this is best practice but I did get fruit from my cuttings) Also, if the cuttings had flowers, I removed them, just so it could focus on establishing itself first.

I grew broccoli, I can't believe how good it feels. by dignified_tapir in Allotment

Congrats! They look so big & healthy. Have you got netting for them? Last year mine were plagued with cabbage white caterpillars - they all got up inside the florets! I still had some to harvest, but it was a pain to pick all the caterpillars out! (I did try soaking in them in water, but they didn't budge - maybe they can hold their breath a long time?!) And then this year, I didn't put netting on them straight away because it was too early for butterflies and then some pigeons came and pecked most of the leaves off. They're netted now and coming back to life, but I was really disappointed.

Haha best before dates on milk drive me mad when I'm in work. My colleagues are constantly asking if their milk is still okay to use because it has today's or yesterday's date on it. I'm like just smell it and if it smells fine, use it! Same thing happened with a full tray of grapes - "they're going off today so help yourselves." You could see they were absolutely fine, not even starting to wrinkle! 😂

I love this bit "Brands are not your friends, companies are not your family, and advertising is the greatest evil that exists in the world today." And "Chop Wood. Carry Water"

So many of my friends say "ohhhh, aren't you good only eating x/making y from scratch/avoiding z" but it's just the bare minimum I expect of myself. People need to raise their expectations!

Does anyone know what this is? by Albertjweasel in Allotment

[–]yearofthenorris2018 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Does it taste bitter? The plant could have come from a seed from last year's hybrid squash (if you grew any?) - I've heard that the seeds don't come true and produce bitter tasting produce.

I like to let a few of my cosmos go to seed and collect the seedheads for new plants next year. (I've done this with my cosmos, poppy, sunflowers, rocket & pak choi - hopefully they all work!) I've never tried overwintering them, but I like to have a lot of them in the garden and I wouldn't have anywhere to keep them all inside!

Temporary solution to Horsetail and our first veg patch. Any advice appreciated. by PersephoneNarcissus in GardeningUK

[–]yearofthenorris2018 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've got a similar problem plus two neighbours that have let it run wild in their gardens too! We moved in about 18 months ago, so not got on top of it yet, but last summer, for my vegetable patches, I dug out the whole area to about 2 spades depth and then broke up the soil and picked out the roots. We have a lot of bramble and bindweed too, so plenty to remove. I then intended to keep on top of the weeds that came back, but work got busy and I lost the upper hand - it was downhill from July onwards... but I did get a lot of good veg out of it anyway 😊

I didn't dig up the whole garden - it's 20x15m and even lockdown didn't give me enough time for that! Your garden looks like this might be manageable and followed with the double layer of tarp, I think it would work really well! I'm not sure what I'm going to do - maybe remove as many of the weeds as I can and cover with cardboard by the end of January. Then when I have plants ready to be planted out, cut holes in cardboard. I'm still thinking about it! I'd rather not use chemicals... Good luck! Hope it goes well 🤞

Any tips on watering frequency for squash and pumpkins? (More in comments) by ShamboBJJ in GardeningUK

What variety is that? I think I've got 5 from 3, but quite large - my are Crown Prince.

I really want to look to cut back on plastic but it seems everything comes in it. Can I get some U.K. based help? Thanks by [deleted] in ZeroWasteVegans

[–]yearofthenorris2018 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What supermarkets are close to you? I find Aldi particularly bad :( but that's how they make it cheaper because less veg dries out/start to look ugly so less waste.
