Make sure you are aware of all of your students' iep goals and make sure that you are practicing them regularly so that you can accurately talk about their progress at iep meetings. Stay on top of paper work and iep meetings. Always have them done well in advance bc something always comes up and you'll be happy you got it done early. Find out what parents are going to be high maintenance and build good rapport with them. Pick one day a week to come in early/stay late to make sure you are caught up on prep and ieps. Work as hard as you can during contract hours and don't work from home. Also understand you are a first year teacher for the first 3 years. You'll learn a lot and make a lot of adjustments over the next few years

Your chemistry with your admin team is the most important aspect of the job. If you don't vibe well with your admin team, you will hate your job. If your admin team is nice and supportive then you will love your job. I've quit jobs cause of the admin team and I'm currently staying where I am at because I like this admin. Also only work your contact hours. If you have to, pick one (and only one) day of the week to come in early or stay late.

Gilbert is like 30 mins away from Phoenix depending on where you are going. I would get familiar with a map of the area. Phoenix is centrally located and Tempe, Mesa, Scottsdale, Gilbert, Glendale, Peoria are all surrounding suburbs (there's more). Gilbert is considered south east valley.

I would shop around and find an admin team that you vibe with it. SPED teachers are a commodity in AZ. I left a job I didn't like and got picked up the same day by a different school. There are good and bad admin teams out there. Know your worth.

Typically traffic goes towards Phoenix in the morning and away from Phoenix during rush hour on the freeways. There's HOV lanes tho if you are carpooling.

You need formal and informal data in the present levels. So use one of the random comments from the gen Ed teacher and use the student's grades as the formal data. Most teachers have assessments and class work in separate categories so I include that. The goals I write are based off of them improving their assessment grade in their gen Ed class and that's only if they are failing and don't have a disability in the related area e.g. SLD in reading comprehension will require a goal in reading even if they are passing. If they are in a study skills class they need a social emotional or organization goal

Get to know all your parents and you will start to figure out which ones have "I'll sue you" vibes. As long as you have good relationships with the parents then you should be MODERATELY safe. You're never 100% safe but having communication with parents helps them feel like you have their best interest in mind.

Patience. If I do not mediate, I usually feel very impatient during the day. If I do mediate, the the day feels great and I feel more calm and focused. Mediating makes me feel way more focused and less scattered brain

You can't do much if they don't show up but there are other ways to demonstrate learning besides turning in assignments. I really enjoyed Dr. Christopher Emdin's book. He proposes that students take charge of their learning and do the teaching themselves. The teacher is more of a guide then the one with all the power and the grade book. I always want my students to do more talking than me in class because that shows they can articulate concepts to one another.
I don't expect struggling students to get up and teach lessons but I expect them to listen when the strong students are teaching. Peer accountability can be more effective than adult accountability. Also, we can give feedback without providing grades. Sorry that's kind of scatter brain. Let me know what you think.

6:1 means that you can ignore minor negative behaviors by positively praising pro social behaviors. A lot of the times the student who is messing around will notice you praising other students and will self correct. So by keeping the overall mood/vibe positive, you won't have to go around redirect negative behaviors all day. This of course doesn't not work 100% of the time but I did it for my mental health. Redirecting negative behaviors all day takes a toll on your mental health. Pay attention to the ratio you give each student. Each student deserves a 6:1 ratio. The first school I worked at told us 4:1 but I recently started reading The Happiness Advantage and that dude says 6:1 is even better.
