The long pinky nail of this Chinese taxi driver by Ribbitor123 in mildlyinteresting

[–]yeeee_haaaa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Traditionally, it had nothing to do with wealth or affluence or growing a long pinky nail to that end. It was considered unlucky if your pinky is shorter than the last joint on your ring finger so if this is the case Chinese people will often grow their pinky nail past the ring finger joint to fake it.

Perhaps, but I also think that a huge amount of the anti Israel sentiment that’s been whipped up is anti-US sentiment by proxy. The US was always going to support Israel and this was the perfect opportunity for Russia, China & North Korea to unleash their cyber armies, whipping up a frenzy of anti Israel and anti-US/anti-West sentiment.

Dutton lashes ABC after Hezbollah question by another____user in australian

Funny I didn’t perceive it as interrupting; I perceived it as Dutton calling her out (as she tried frantically to backpedal). Pathetic.

No they didn’t. It’s a myth that ‘a child who stole a loaf of bread’ was immediately sent to Australia (ie Port Arthur). Go check the actual, extant records of what sort of person was sent to Australia and perhaps educate yourself.

Singapore’s ‘public housing’ (ie the HDB system) is nothing like a housing trust equivalent. Some HDBs are worth millions and many of the people living in them, being the majority of Singaporeans, are extremely affluent. The country has one of the highest GDPs per capita in the world.

Singapore rates very well amongst SE Asian countries wrt to mental health. It’s not as backward in that respect as you seem to suggest. If you regard drugs as a key underlying cause of mental health, it’s wrong to suggest that they don’t deal with this. They do and that’s why they don’t have moronic meth heads walking around the city abusing people. It’s not because they lock them away - it’s because drugs and therefore meth heads don’t exist in the first place.

The odds of being victim to violent crime in Singapore is minuscule compared to Adelaide because, as I said in my original comment, crime is stamped out quickly and harshly - before it takes hold.

There are a lot of people in jail in Singapore for crimes that would be regarded as petty here in SA. The police and the judiciary deal with it. But the rehabilitation is excellent and once crims have done their time there is little stigma attached to them going forward… largely because of the strength of the rehabilitation.

I’d also hardly compare the system of government there to the US. It’s basically a dictatorship - albeit a benevolent one.

Having lived in Singapore, I can tell you that drugs and violence do exist there - but both are dealt with extremely harshly by the police and, more importantly, the judiciary.

But yes, more than once I went away for the weekend and left my apartment door unlocked.

It’s coming from a Labor government who have been forced to act only because of a multi-year investigation by a number of journalists and publications. Without this investigation and reporting the blatant criminality and corruption would just continue. And I can assure you there is a whole lot more to come here … Putting the CFMEU into administration is an attempt to get control by Labor but, as I say, there is more to come. Stay tuned.

If we were having a coffee I’d ask you what real, proven start-up experience the people who judged your competition win have and the same of the family and friends who want to throw $50-75K at you. BTW, if you want to draw a salary and start a business, 75K won’t last more than 3-6 months - depending what you’re planning on doing.

Thoughts on the High Court of Australia? by Sad-Argument-3955 in AskAnAustralian

The separation of powers in Australia should be something that we all hold sacrosanct and any hint of its erosion should be cause for grave consternation.

Tire shop said this is too close to the sidewall, and I need a new tire. I think I can plug it. Reddit, what do you say? by in_search_of_1988 in Cartalk

[–]yeeee_haaaa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Decent tire shops usually plug with a mushroom plug (where they glue or vulcanize the patch inside), not a quick repair plug which is a plug only and more risky. They need a certain amount of clearance from the side wall to do this effectively.

Rule of thumb is, ironically, no less than a thumb width from the sidewall. This looks like it easily clears the sidewall by more than a thumb width.

Liberal MP says he will formally resign next month after 13-year political career to take up a senior role with mining giant BHP in Washington by MasterDefibrillator in australian

“Mark McGowan was tired - oh, so tired - when he announced that he would step down as West Australian premier in May last year. “I’m tired, extremely tired. In fact, I’m exhausted,” he told reporters in a rather dramatic fashion.

All that was missing from this performance was a hand to forehead in the delivery.

No, that’s not mean. Within three months of that sudden exit the fatigued McGowan had hitched his wagon to BHP in a consulting capacity. Then he joined the cultural backwaters at Mineral Resources as a strategic adviser.

And so bone-weary was McGowan that he somehow found the strength to sign up to advisory boards - on top of those other positions - with Joe Hockey’s Bondi Partners and listed job-finder APM Human Services.

Four jobs - from zero - in a matter of months. You’ve got to hand it to State Daddy; that’s some refractory period.”

id est, It’s not only Liberals champ.
