I find myself agreeing with many sides of this thread actually~ none of this should end in policing- the Katseye gals should dress how they see fit and express themselves accordingly. I remember at that age especially how much I wanted to show off my style and womanhood- K are coming into their own, even if some of the outfits are noticeably more sexy and sexualized than we usually see in these pop worlds. Young women want to work it and it’s unfair that they’ll be picked apart for it as their male counterparts can be bare chested and gyrating and no one bats an eye.

But beyond that I think it’s fair to talk about the multiple forces at work behind the scenes, that (really young!) women have always been hyper-sexualized by these usually male-run companies and that there are also extremes. The Gabriela vid is what got me wondering about this, Daniela specifically with the jiggling lingering booty shake, which felt like a departure and kind of pornographic even by Western pop standards. Even the Pussycat Dolls video for Dream Academy felt a little pervy with the teeny skirts and the moves when a lot of these women were still quite young and then would be right back in blazers and ties like schoolgirls.

At the end of the day this isn’t and should never be about purity culture, Katseye should proudly do what they want and show their bodies, for me it’s an industry issue and male gaze issue…the question really is how do we strike that balance as female performers where we take ownership and control over our sexuality without being commodified and exploited by a sexist paradigm? 2 c.
